I was impressed with the 3 new guest beers on. This does seem to be one of the better Wetherspoons in the county in that it does have a fair few of new beers on whenever I go in. Again pretty quiet on an early Friday evening in January. Service was better this time round and I actually got full half pints.
BeerABVScoreNotes
B&T (Banks & Taylor's) - Dragons Gold5.20ExcellentCopper colour with lasting bubbly off white head. Alcohol makes this fuller bodied than a standard bitter. Good strong bitter, plenty of bitter hop finish. Yeast, hop aroma, toffee malt in mouth and then really great bitter finish.
Freeminer - Resolution Pale Ale4.50GoodGold, thin off white head. Quite a fruity golden bitter, nice citrus peachy finish, in fact the citrus hop finish grows after the final swallow. Aroma of subtle peach/nectarine which is lovely. Quite hard water in mouth.
Saltaire - Fuggles3.80GoodCopper colour with lasting bubbly off white head. Very earthy Fuggles through out. Really quite bitter on finish, bit of blue cheese too, in fact really quite stiltony. Malt is ok, but cold back the hop up more. Lovely blue cheese, would go well with crackers, this pint. Really quite bitter and drying. Good condition and tasted fresh.

Friday afternoon and quite busy so that I had to sit upstairs. I was excited by both the Ringwood Porter and Wickwar Old Arnold being on. As my server was quite enthusiatic with the handpump, both beers came up short of being full pints with quite frothy heads. When I asked for both to be topped up, he did the Porter, but said the Old Arnold was "perfect." Clearly, Spoons training programme doesn't cover the weights and measures law of the UK. I left the bar with my 2 pints laughing. Still I enjoyed both beers. I shall speak with the bar manager next time I see him.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Ringwood - 4X Porter4.70GoodI have lost my notebook, but still remember this having all of the right component parts in a good balance without being outstanding. You could do worse than drink this.
Wickwar - Old Arnold4.60GoodTasty full flavoured malty best bitter.

Friday late lunchtime and it wasn't exactly heaving. I got the corner snug at the rear on the non smoking side, so I sat in the big, high backed easy chair and let the woes of the week slip away from me. I also had a bottle of Thomas Hardy Ale. There are still around 20 of these in the cellar following the October beer festival, so ask for one as they are excellent and still at only £2.49 a bottle.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hook Norton - Copper Ale4.80AcceptableReddish copper colour with lasting bubbly beige head. Some yeast and promise of sweet fruity malt on the aroma. Bit of herby hop there too. Sweetish caramel/toffee and malty fruit in the mouth, juicy too. Really quite sweet and then some herby hop on end. Nice enough, but a bit too sweet. Tasted a bit like an overly sweet pint of Hooky.

I was a bit disappointed that not all of the beers from the October light and dark festival were going to be on, but there was still enough new stuff for me to have a go at. Came here with Martin and sat upstairs staring at the blue sky and clouds painted on the ceiling (at least thats what I thought they were after my bottle of Thomas Hardy ale)
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hydes - Inspiration4.50GoodCopper colour with lasting bubbly off white head. Reasonably good fruit on aroma. Very nice bitterness on end. Fresh, likeable bitter. Tingly finish on tongue. Some yeast on aroma. Hop/bitterness are good.
Wadworth - Bishop's Tipple5.00AcceptableGold/copper colour with lasting bubbly off white head. Farty yeasty aroma, some promise of sweetish malt. Fartier than I remember. Better in mouth. Quite rich. Moderate light fruit flavours. Drying finish.
Highgate - Lone Wolf4.60AcceptableCopper colour with disappearing bubbly beige head. Quite a fruity bitter. Fruity yeast on aroma. Reasonable fullness in mouth, Turkish Delight fruit. Bit of gingerish hop on end. Fruit lifts it above average.
Banks's - Bostin Bitter4.20AcceptableMid brown colour with lasting bubbly beige head. Drinkable inoffensive malty bitter. Stronger choc malt than most bitters. It’s fine. Nice tangy hop on end. Better than I expected.
24 Oct 2006 (Ian)
The very helpful bar manager offered to let me take some of the Thomas Hardy bottles home unopened for ageing, which was nice of him. Not a huge turnover since yesterday of the festival beers, a couple more had gone (including Greene King Orchard) whilst the Brains Dark still sits there. More new ones should be on this evening. So last night I had to content myself with a non festival bitter.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Butcombe - Bitter (or Original Beer)4.00ExcellentSlight haze, copper colour with thick lasting beige head. Yeast and dry earthy hop aroma. Touch of citrus, and smells fresh. Beautiful in mouth, slides down too easy, fullish in mouth and in good condition despite the haze. Right level of natural carbonation. Then tingly hop finish. Good sharp bitterness. Best bitter I've had in a fortnight. Terrific.
23 Oct 2006 (Ian)
After the weekend, I thought that I would pop in to see if they had had a turnover of the festival beers as there are some I wanted to try. The manager was very helpful and gave me some idea of what would be on when. He said that it was going well and they had sold more than usual. Also that the Exmoor Beast at 6.6% would be one of the last ones to go on and he expected it to go within a matter of hours. Still a lovely converted church inside.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Titanic - Stout4.50ExcellentI love this in bottle conditioned form, but I can't remember the last time I had it on draught (if at all). Now this I like. Black with thin tan head. Juicy dark malts, a bitter edge. Faint molasses and chewy malts. Thick, gluttonous and lovely. Choc malt and then a reall bitter dark choc, espresso edge on finish. Lovely
Hydes - Original Bitter3.80AcceptableCopper colour with thin bubbly beige head. Slightly acidic aroma. Thinnish bitter, some yeast, malt and hop, but not huge flavours. Some citrusy hoppy bite on the end that tingles the tongue.
20 Oct 2006 (Ian)
I came here for the October beer festival, see the link below. http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/offers/2006octbeerfestival/ This pub normally has the full range of festival beers and starts with the lower ABV ones and builds. It also seems to have a pretty decent throughput of beers, so they should be in decent condition. Relatively busy early Friday evening, but I was there before the real Friday night crowd arrived. Friendly staff looked after me well, even giving me a proper stemmed glass for the bottle of Thomas Hardy Ale 2005 which I had to finish my evening with.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Elgood's - Cambridge Bitter3.80AcceptableAttractive chestnut colour with lasting creamy beige head. Some light malt and some earthy hop on the aroma. Not a huge aroma. Bit of malt in mouth, but a bit watery too and lacking in flavour. OK, if too watery
Mordue - Five Bridge Bitter3.80AcceptableSlight haze with a copper colour and a bubbly beige head. Quite a lovely hop aroma, bit of malty fruit. Malt is a little syrupy in mouth. Palate is odd. Bit medicinal. Finish has goodish hop, drying. Shame, as I like Mordue beers, but th malt isn't right on this and the hop is too drying on the end to be balanced.
Smiles - Blond1.00AcceptableHazy copper colour, with lasting fluffy beige head. Yeast and butter on aroma, some light citrus fruits. Light in mouth. More buttery/caramel in mouth. Bit of muddy, earthy hop finish. Light citrus notes on finish. It wasn't blond and it didn't make me smile.
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Pitch Black4.30AcceptableVery deep ruby, with bubbly beige head. Maybe I have got to get used to UK yeasts and beers again after 2 weeks in the Pacific North West. Some nice choc malts. bit of charcoal. Some dark fruits. Just lacks depth and body.
Batemans - Strawberry Fields4.20PoorRed/copper colour with disappearing beige/pink head. Artificial perfumed strawberry aroma. Awful in mouth. Fruit and beer not integrated. Chalky. Like drinking liquid strawberry Rennie indigestion tablets. Awful.
Brewster's - Rutterkin (superseded by 5% version)4.60UndrinkableVinegar. I took it back and they took it off sale straight away without question.

Cotleigh - Barn Owl Bitter4.50ExcellentMahogany colour with bubbly beige head. Attractive rich malt and hop aroma. More rich dry malt in mouth. Plenty of fruit as well as some coffee. Dry long finish of dry dry malt. Very tasty and I could have easily drank a couple more pints.
Clark's (sometimes shown as Westgate Brewery) - Golden Hornet5.00AcceptableGolden with disappearing off white head. Honeyish aroma, citrus juicy honey in mouth. Dry hoppy finish with bit of herby spice. Nice, really quite drinkable.

Came in to watch the Italy vs Czech Republic game in the World Cup. Staff were pretty good in turning the game on and turning the volume up. Also had a bottle of Okocim Polish lager.

Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00ExcellentToo cold, but the choc, raspberry malts are superb with herby peppery hop finish. Really good condition. Slightly sweet malt and then even better hop

Just popped in before going home, just to see if there was anything more interesting than the Ashford one.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Greene King - The Diamond3.70GoodCopper colour with lasting beige head. Toffee and hop aroma. Creamy in mouth. Not at all bad. Quite pleasant session bitter with nice sweetish hops on the end.
Hook Norton - 303AD (aka Generation)4.00PoorI put the poor condition of this beer down to the fact that it was served at a JDW pub, but I just think that this beer really just doesn’t have much to it. Gold with thick lasting beige head. Bit of cream. Some hay type hop. In mouth, its soft and rather flavourless. Soft golden bitter with a bit of dusty hop and some citrus. Where is the flavour?
Greene King - 19664.30PoorCopper coloured bitter with disappearing white head. But for me it had a bit of vinegar. Maybe it wasn’t served at its best. Malt is ok but the vinegar element is nasty. May have it again to see if it is in better condition.
