Just popped in before going home, just to see if there was anything more interesting than the Ashford one.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Greene King - The Diamond3.70GoodCopper colour with lasting beige head. Toffee and hop aroma. Creamy in mouth. Not at all bad. Quite pleasant session bitter with nice sweetish hops on the end.
Hook Norton - 303AD (aka Generation)4.00PoorI put the poor condition of this beer down to the fact that it was served at a JDW pub, but I just think that this beer really just doesn’t have much to it. Gold with thick lasting beige head. Bit of cream. Some hay type hop. In mouth, its soft and rather flavourless. Soft golden bitter with a bit of dusty hop and some citrus. Where is the flavour?
Greene King - 19664.30PoorCopper coloured bitter with disappearing white head. But for me it had a bit of vinegar. Maybe it wasn’t served at its best. Malt is ok but the vinegar element is nasty. May have it again to see if it is in better condition.

Stopped in after work for a quickie before going home, hoping that the A Over T would still be on.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hogs Back - A over T9.00ExcellentThis had developed since the previous day. The sweetness was still there, but the strawberry and grapefruit were more pronounced. Just a stunning beer. After 3 halves (they won't serve it in pints, I don't blame them) in an hour, I was in a completely different place of my own, somewhere near the Mighty Boosh I think. I was so drunk it was unbelievable.
18 May 2006 (Ian)
Popped in for any new festival beers and A over T was on! Hallelujah!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hogs Back - A over T9.00ExcellentReddy/chestnut beer with bubbly disappearing head. Sweet hop and candy sugar sweet aroma. Thick in mouth, good hit of alcohol which is warming but not unpleasant. Grapefruit and raisin fruit flavours. Really rather good. Like the other Hog's Back barley wines/strong beers, this is excellent. Just the right mix of intense hop and alcoholic strength.
17 May 2006 (Ian)
Back here again to see what new beers have been added for the beer festival.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brains - SA Gold (now 4.3% see separate entry)4.70ExcellentAs good as the day before, just a whole load of hop and juicy fruit. So drinkable it should be illegal.
Okell's - Aile4.80ExcellentBlack beer with thick bubbly beige lasting head. Porter is such an under made and under appreciated style, every brewery should make one and brew it on a regular basis, it's a great style. And this is an interesting version. Odd burst of hops on aroma. You expect roast malt/choc/coffee or sour liquorice, but it's choc hop instead. In mouth there's liquorice and choc and then tight hop bite on the end with more liquorice. Interesting hop/liquorice/choc balance.

One of the manager's saw that I was taking notes and came over and we started talking about the beer festival. They are aware that they serve their beer too cold and are trying to do something about it. Also the stronger beers will be on towards the end of the week, so perhaps Saturday or Sunday will bring me the Hogs Back A Over T that I have been searching for all spring.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brains - SA Gold (now 4.3% see separate entry)4.70ExcellentGold colour with lasting off white head. Really lovely hop aroma and flavour, reminds me of Summer Lightning when I first had it back in the 90s. Some rose petal and some raspberry fruit and then a gorgeous hop finish. Really lovely.
Greene King - Triumph4.30AcceptableCopper colour, thin off white head. Some hop/yeast aroma. Fruits in mouth are alright, rose/pear drop, dusty finish. Better than in bottle. OK hop on end. Not too much going on though
Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Tom Fool4.00AcceptableCopper colour, disappearing bubbly beige head. Some red berry malt fruit aroma. Bit thin in mouth. Not much of a finish. Faint hop. Fine, nothing wrong, just lacks flavour
15 May 2006 (Ian)
One of my favourite conversions. This former church is a great building. I sat upstairs in the gallery. Here for the festival beers. Like some Wetherspoons, could do with more bar staff.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Wadworth - Czech Mate3.50GoodAmber colour, slight haze with creamy head. I was expecting a lager or cask conditioned lager, but this is neither although is was stuck through a chiller of some kind. Aromatic hop aroma, which is attractive, malty (even some choc) but wet in mouth, with more aromatic hop bite on finish. Some pear drop fruit. I like it. Clean, refreshing and excellent use of hops
Thwaites - Thoroughbred4.00AcceptableCopper colour, lasting cream head. Some butter/hop aroma, yeasty. Nothing much in mouth with dusty finish. Distinctly average in my opinion and on this pint.

Popped in for one on my way home from work.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Robinsons - Enigma4.70AcceptableDon’t you just love it when they use a blank pump clip and just write the name of the beer on it? And then you ask who the brewer is and the people behind the bar have absolutely no idea. I mean they are only selling 6 beers, how difficult can it be? And this was the bar manager!! Worrying times. Fortunately Wetherspoons handy guest cask ale list pamphlet listed this. Reddish copper with thin bubbly beige head. Red fruit and some yeast. Faint caramel and yeast and fruit flavours in the mouth are pretty good. Served too cold. Finish has some earthy citrus. Some lemon in with strawberry and cherry. Still a bit thin to be really good

Had been talking about beer with a colleague at work and it made me thirsty so I stopped off here on my way home. Not too busy with the usual crowd of hardened drinkers and tourists in this spectacular conversion of a church
BeerABVScoreNotes
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's Winter Warmer5.00ExcellentOne of my real favourite winter beers. Lots of rich fruit and chocolate malts. Smooth in the mouth and kicks a punch at the end although you can't really taste the alcohol. Gorgeous stuff, but I really must limit myself to only halves of this especially on an empty stomach. I was a bit wayward on the way back to the station.

Monday lunchtime and it was fairly empty. Which was nice as I got one of the corner snugs in this fantastically converted church
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brakspear (at Marston's Wychwood then at Banks's) - Special4.30GoodChestnut colour, thing lasting beige head. Attractive yeast/hop/caramel aroma. More yeasty caramel in mouth before a really drying hop finish. Quite a beauty for this style of beer
