Stopped in after work for a quickie before going home, hoping that the A Over T would still be on.
Hogs Back - A over T | 9.00 | | This had developed since the previous day. The sweetness was still there, but the strawberry and grapefruit were more pronounced. Just a stunning beer. After 3 halves (they won't serve it in pints, I don't blame them) in an hour, I was in a completely different place of my own, somewhere near the Mighty Boosh I think. I was so drunk it was unbelievable. |
18 May 2006 (Ian)
Popped in for any new festival beers and A over T was on! Hallelujah!
Hogs Back - A over T | 9.00 | | Reddy/chestnut beer with bubbly disappearing head. Sweet hop and candy sugar sweet aroma. Thick in mouth, good hit of alcohol which is warming but not unpleasant. Grapefruit and raisin fruit flavours. Really rather good. Like the other Hog's Back barley wines/strong beers, this is excellent. Just the right mix of intense hop and alcoholic strength. |
17 May 2006 (Ian)
Back here again to see what new beers have been added for the beer festival.
Brains - SA Gold (now 4.3% see separate entry) | 4.70 | | As good as the day before, just a whole load of hop and juicy fruit. So drinkable it should be illegal. |
Okell's - Aile | 4.80 | | Black beer with thick bubbly beige lasting head. Porter is such an under made and under appreciated style, every brewery should make one and brew it on a regular basis, it's a great style. And this is an interesting version. Odd burst of hops on aroma. You expect roast malt/choc/coffee or sour liquorice, but it's choc hop instead. In mouth there's liquorice and choc and then tight hop bite on the end with more liquorice. Interesting hop/liquorice/choc balance. |

One of the manager's saw that I was taking notes and came over and we started talking about the beer festival. They are aware that they serve their beer too cold and are trying to do something about it. Also the stronger beers will be on towards the end of the week, so perhaps Saturday or Sunday will bring me the Hogs Back A Over T that I have been searching for all spring.
Brains - SA Gold (now 4.3% see separate entry) | 4.70 | | Gold colour with lasting off white head. Really lovely hop aroma and flavour, reminds me of Summer Lightning when I first had it back in the 90s. Some rose petal and some raspberry fruit and then a gorgeous hop finish. Really lovely. |
Greene King - Triumph | 4.30 | | Copper colour, thin off white head. Some hop/yeast aroma. Fruits in mouth are alright, rose/pear drop, dusty finish. Better than in bottle. OK hop on end. Not too much going on though |
Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Tom Fool | 4.00 | | Copper colour, disappearing bubbly beige head. Some red berry malt fruit aroma. Bit thin in mouth. Not much of a finish. Faint hop. Fine, nothing wrong, just lacks flavour |

One of my favourite conversions. This former church is a great building. I sat upstairs in the gallery. Here for the festival beers. Like some Wetherspoons, could do with more bar staff.
Wadworth - Czech Mate | 3.50 | | Amber colour, slight haze with creamy head. I was expecting a lager or cask conditioned lager, but this is neither although is was stuck through a chiller of some kind. Aromatic hop aroma, which is attractive, malty (even some choc) but wet in mouth, with more aromatic hop bite on finish. Some pear drop fruit. I like it. Clean, refreshing and excellent use of hops |
Thwaites - Thoroughbred | 4.00 | | Copper colour, lasting cream head. Some butter/hop aroma, yeasty. Nothing much in mouth with dusty finish. Distinctly average in my opinion and on this pint. |
Brakspear (at Marston's Wychwood) - Bitter | 3.40 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Early Bird | 4.30 | Not Tried
Theakston - XB (was 4.6%) | 4.50 | Not Tried
Hydes - Jekyll's Gold | 4.30 | Not Tried
Caledonian - Dr Bobs Magic Potion | 3.50 | Not Tried
Banks's - Chocolate Mild | 4.30 | Not Tried
06 Jan 2006 (Ian)
Popped in for one on my way home from work.
Robinsons - Enigma | 4.70 | | Don’t you just love it when they use a blank pump clip and just write the name of the beer on it? And then you ask who the brewer is and the people behind the bar have absolutely no idea. I mean they are only selling 6 beers, how difficult can it be? And this was the bar manager!! Worrying times. Fortunately Wetherspoons handy guest cask ale list pamphlet listed this. Reddish copper with thin bubbly beige head. Red fruit and some yeast. Faint caramel and yeast and fruit flavours in the mouth are pretty good. Served too cold. Finish has some earthy citrus. Some lemon in with strawberry and cherry. Still a bit thin to be really good |
03 Jan 2006 (Ian)
Had been talking about beer with a colleague at work and it made me thirsty so I stopped off here on my way home. Not too busy with the usual crowd of hardened drinkers and tourists in this spectacular conversion of a church
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's Winter Warmer | 5.00 | | One of my real favourite winter beers. Lots of rich fruit and chocolate malts. Smooth in the mouth and kicks a punch at the end although you can't really taste the alcohol. Gorgeous stuff, but I really must limit myself to only halves of this especially on an empty stomach. I was a bit wayward on the way back to the station. |
Greene King - Morland Old Speckled Hen | 4.50 | Not Tried
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Tiger | 4.20 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Hop Back - Good Elff | 3.90 | Not Tried | My own personal winner of the worst pun name for a Christmas beer this year |
05 Dec 2005 (Ian)
Monday lunchtime and it was fairly empty. Which was nice as I got one of the corner snugs in this fantastically converted church
Brakspear (at Marston's Wychwood) - Special | 4.30 | | Chestnut colour, thing lasting beige head. Attractive yeast/hop/caramel aroma. More yeasty caramel in mouth before a really drying hop finish. Quite a beauty for this style of beer |
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Courage Directors (use Banks's entry now please) | 4.80 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Marston's - Burton Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Yorkshire Terrier | 4.20 | Not Tried
12 Nov 2005 (Andrew)
Interesting split level building. Packed with more people on their way to the clubs
Oakham - Bishops Farewell | 4.60 | | Fresh hoppy and light |
Cains - Dragon Heart | 5.00 | | Dark brew that, if it hadn't have been so busy at the bar, I'd have taken back |
31 Oct 2005 (Ian)
Converted church with a painted ceiling depicting a blue sky with fluffly white clouds. Wrought iron staircase leads up to more seating on the balcony. Corner booths on the ground floor are sought after with good high backed arm chairs and beautiful wood carving
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | Pale chestnut colour with thin off white head. Really nice rich malt/hop aromas. OK in mouth if a touch smokey. Nice berry finish with spicey hop. Just amazed to find this beer in a Wetherspoon's |
Elgood's - Black Dog Mild | 3.60 | | Cylced here straignt from work and this was a real joy as a first drink. Dark ruby colour with bubbly thin beige head. Some roasted malt on the nose. Refreshing mild. Bit of toastiness. Like well done toast. Really good after cycle ride. Some coffee on finish. Good mild |
Robinsons - Unicorn | 4.20 | | Orange/copper colour with thick bige tight lasting head. Some sulphur along with yeasty nose. Bit thin in mouth with some biscuit malt. Some floral hop and yeast finish. Fine bitter of this style |
Titanic - Night to Remember | 4.30 | | Red berry aroma, quite full in mouth good syrupy fruitiness in mouth. Dry finish. Better than day before at County Hotel |
