Visits Details
09 Apr 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Crowded at around 8pm.
Wolf - Tasmanian Wolf | 5.00 | | Golden-coloured. I didn’t fully appreciate this one as by now my palate is somewhat jaded. |
Celt Experience (now brands are owned by Evans Evans) - Continental Drift | 5.90 | | Dark amber/red in colour. Described as a ‘Red Rye IPA’, this beer has nice hops and an over-dominant (to my mind) rye taste. Obviously strong. |
Caledonian - Brewer's Passion | 4.60 | Not Tried
Joseph Holt (see also Holt's) - IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
Belhaven - Black Scottish Stout | 4.20 | Not Tried
RCH - Wheat Beer | 4.40 | Not Tried
Adnams - Devils Backbone American Amber | 4.80 | Not Tried
Batemans - Good George Pacific Pearl | 5.50 | Not Tried
Banks's - Vasileostrovsky Siberian Red | 6.00 | Not Tried
26 Mar 2013 (HSB)
Quick one whilst waiting for train. As busy as ever.
Flack Manor - Flack Catcher | 4.40
13 Feb 2013 (HSB)
Drink after the funeral.
Box Steam - Piston Broke | 4.50
19 Jan 2013 (Martin the Mildman)
Rammed when I arrived, empty when I departed. Something to do with a football match over East London.
WharfeBank - Try This | 3.70 | | I think it was pale once, but this resembled hop soup, being the last out of the cask I should think. Lots of citrus hop in this but not much else left to bind it together. My score 14 with C for quality (end of cask). |
13 Jan 2013 (HSB)
Sunday morning. Been up to see steam on the Met. Looked for a coffee shop. All closed. Hals open beer beckoned.
Banks & Taylor's (B&T) - Shefford Old Strong (SOS) | 5.00
18 Dec 2012 (HSB)
Quick one before my train. Very busy indeed.
Rudgate - Beerwulf | 4.20
13 Sep 2012 (HSB)
Quick pint before my train. Full and standing.
Kelham Island (probably brewed by Thornbridge now) - Pale Rider | 5.20
24 Aug 2012 (HSB)
Quick pint before my train. Usual bear garden.
Cotleigh - Buzzard | 4.80
12 Jan 2012 (Stephen Harris)
This pub was at one time said to have the highest turnover of any pub in the UK. I’m not sure if that is still true, and I’ve certainly seen it busier than it was on this visit – but there must still have been several hundred customers present inside and out. Luckily, and especially by Wetherspoon standards, the service here is always very good.
Slater's - Haka | 5.20 | | A fairly pale beer with an immediate hop aroma as soon as it is poured. Plenty of malt character and a full mouthfeel. But full of NZ hops, without going down the 'glass of grapefruit juice' trap. Superb - my beer of the year so far. |
Batemans - Veto Ale | 4.30 | | A rather dull, amber bitter. A bit sweet, not a lot of hops in it. rather ordinary really. |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Exmoor - Gold | 4.50 | Not Tried
Harviestoun - Bitter & Twisted | 3.80 | Not Tried
Titanic - Full Steam Ahead | 4.40 | Not Tried
Newby Wyke - White Squall | 4.80 | Not Tried | One of my favourites. But we were pub-crawling and there was no time for this one. |
Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Cocker Hoop (aka September Ale) | 4.60 | Not Tried
Blindmans - Mine Beer | 4.20 | Not Tried
25 Oct 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Brewster's - American Chopper | 4.80 | | Pale gold in colour with good citrus hop character balanced by some maltiness. Finish is of citrus hop. My score 15/20. |
