Visits Details

23 Oct 2020 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until curfew close up. Lightly loaded so lots of social distancing possible. This house must be complimented for keeping to just 3 superbly kept ales, not being tempted to overreach its range.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Tonbridge - Rustic4.00Excellent
Iron Pier - Cast Iron Stout4.70Excellent4½* Superbly bittered
Angels & Demons (now uses McCanns branding not its own) - The Second Coming4.50ExcellentAnother near perfect 4½* beer with a very dry sharp bitterness, which goes down the throat like a torrent
09 Oct 2020 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until curfew close. Very pleased to get my "old" seat right by the bar counter.
BeerABVScoreNotes

07 Oct 2020 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until curfew close. I visited specifically because the pub's Facebook page had announced that two A&D beers were on.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Angels & Demons (now uses McCanns branding not its own) - Bombay Social3.80ExceptionalSimply perfect. One of 2 A&D beers here tonight in what can only be called tip-top condition and a credit to the brewer and the pub Guv's keeping skills
McCanns (used to use Angels and Demons name as well) - The Troubadour4.50ExceptionalSimply perfect. One of 2 A&D beers here tonight in what can only be called tip-top condition and a credit to the brewer and the pub Guv's keeping skills
Wantsum - Black Pig4.80ExcellentLarge taster measure and this was in lovely form with complex tastes
02 Oct 2020 (Philip Pirrip)
Every seat taken, but a corner seat found for me until curfew close.
BeerABVScoreNotes

Wantsum - Black Prince3.90Not Tried
26 Sep 2020 (Philip Pirrip)

18 Aug 2020 (Philip Pirrip)
Afternoon into early evening visit, first for nearly 5 months. Little has changed except frontage and front fascia sign painted up in new colour schemes and a bit inside too. All sitting well apart inside. Sad news to hear co-Guv Steve is not very well at present.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Stockport - Stockport Pale3.90ExcellentI was dubious from the description but was well balanced and not an in your face lemon juice
Musket - Flintlock Best Bitter4.20ExcellentGood enough to have a second
New River - Blind Poet4.50ExcellentVery popular today, a smoked porter
20 Mar 2020 (Philip Pirrip)
Valedictory late visit but a return one soon hoped for. Only Dame Vera was missing from the "We'll meet again" refrains.
BeerABVScoreNotes
North Yorkshire - Yorkshire Porter4.40ExcellentVery chocolatey and kept its head and lacing throughout
Kent - ALTernative Amber4.50ExcellentFirst, third and last beer in a pub for a while

The pub is found in Welling, Greater London, DA16 1TR.

Located in Welling High Street this is Greater London's first micropub and it follows the East Kent model initiated by Martyn Hillier at The Butchers Arms in Herne. Opened Friday 15th March 2013. For many years a corn chandler's shop selling, amongst other things, millet for bird seed. Most recently an electrical lighting shop. Planning permission received for conversion to a Micropub in late 2012. Has a separate cooled cask room with wooden gravity stillage which can be viewed through a window in the main bar. Real ales, ciders and wine are served to a small bar counter by the stillage room door. Lined glasses in regular use. One main front bar and a smaller rear quiet room with a real fire (not currently used), comfortable seating and darts board, leading to a Unisex toilet. The main bar comprises wall mounted bench seating and normal height tables. The pub name does not refer to its previous use but is a family joke related to the original Guv here. CAMRA Bexley Branch Pub of the Year for 2014 - not bad after just one year of being open. CAMRA Greater London Regional Pub of the Year 2014, deserved and even more astounding. Changed hands on Friday 11th October 2019. Card payments accepted.

We have visited this pub 336 times, seen 500 different beers and tried 361 of them.
