Visits Details
15 Dec 2020 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until close for yet Covid lockdown enforced shut down, with mandated blow out meal.
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Pardoner's Ale | 3.80 | | Guv admitted this was served from a 5 litre minikeg. Seemed rather metallic and incomplete to me |
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Merchant's Stout | 4.00
31 Oct 2020 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until curfew close. A table end found for me. Initial disappointment to see only Mighty Oak beers on the board but the magic of the Guv and his cellar made than all surprisingly appetising.
Mighty Oak - Oscar Wilde Mild | 3.70 | | Selling very well here |
Mighty Oak - Captain Bob | 3.80 | | New cask on |
Mighty Oak - Al Capone | 3.90 | | Last out of cask and no faults found. A dark malty ale |
Mighty Oak - Geeorge Gershwin | 4.30
29 Oct 2020 (Magnus Greel)
Early evening until 21.00 close however my tentative last order at 20.53 was without any drinking up time impediments. My first and long overdue visit to this place and stayed far longer than planned thanks to the friendly jovial and relaxed atmosphere experienced.
McCanns (used to use Angels and Demons name as well) - Janet Street Green Hop Porter | 4.50 | | Creamy smooth with a dry liquorice twang. Superb and faultless. |
Tonbridge - Capel Pale Ale | 4.50 | | Toasty hoppy with a bitter finish |
Tonbridge - Old Chestnut | 4.40 | | Nutty yet refreshing brown ale |
23 Oct 2020 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until curfew close up. Lightly loaded so lots of social distancing possible. This house must be complimented for keeping to just 3 superbly kept ales, not being tempted to overreach its range.
Tonbridge - Rustic | 4.00
Iron Pier - Cast Iron Stout | 4.70 | | 4½* Superbly bittered |
Angels & Demons (now uses McCanns branding not its own) - The Second Coming | 4.50 | | Another near perfect 4½* beer with a very dry sharp bitterness, which goes down the throat like a torrent |
09 Oct 2020 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until curfew close. Very pleased to get my "old" seat right by the bar counter.
Musket - Fife & Drum Golden Ale | 3.80 | | Another 5 star - the third in two visits here. Who must be doing something right? |
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - Green & Pale East Kent Goldings Green Hop Ale | 3.80 | | Very zingy on the old mouthfeel |
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Miller's Ale (originally 4.5%) | 4.20 | Not Tried
07 Oct 2020 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until curfew close. I visited specifically because the pub's Facebook page had announced that two A&D beers were on.
Angels & Demons (now uses McCanns branding not its own) - Bombay Social | 3.80 | | Simply perfect. One of 2 A&D beers here tonight in what can only be called tip-top condition and a credit to the brewer and the pub Guv's keeping skills |
McCanns (used to use Angels and Demons name as well) - The Troubadour | 4.50 | | Simply perfect. One of 2 A&D beers here tonight in what can only be called tip-top condition and a credit to the brewer and the pub Guv's keeping skills |
Wantsum - Black Pig | 4.80 | | Large taster measure and this was in lovely form with complex tastes |
02 Oct 2020 (Philip Pirrip)
Every seat taken, but a corner seat found for me until curfew close.
Elland - White Prussian | 3.90 | | Just the one word, perfect. But for curfew close I might have drowned in the stuff |
Musket - Muzzleloader | 4.50
Wantsum - Black Prince | 3.90 | Not Tried
26 Sep 2020 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until curfew close. Had been more crowded earlier. Good banter, as expected, to raise the spirits.
Hop Fuzz - English | 4.00 | | Just a mid brown English bitter and a new cask, nowt not to like |
Angels & Demons (now uses McCanns branding not its own) - McCanns Hockley Soul | 4.20 | | Good one to finish on |
Hop Fuzz - Hop Buzz Hythe Green Hop Beer | 4.00 | | Good but not my favourite of the three on here tonight |
18 Aug 2020 (Philip Pirrip)
Afternoon into early evening visit, first for nearly 5 months. Little has changed except frontage and front fascia sign painted up in new colour schemes and a bit inside too. All sitting well apart inside. Sad news to hear co-Guv Steve is not very well at present.
Stockport - Stockport Pale | 3.90 | | I was dubious from the description but was well balanced and not an in your face lemon juice |
Musket - Flintlock Best Bitter | 4.20 | | Good enough to have a second |
New River - Blind Poet | 4.50 | | Very popular today, a smoked porter |
20 Mar 2020 (Philip Pirrip)
Valedictory late visit but a return one soon hoped for. Only Dame Vera was missing from the "We'll meet again" refrains.
North Yorkshire - Yorkshire Porter | 4.40 | | Very chocolatey and kept its head and lacing throughout |
Kent - ALTernative Amber | 4.50 | | First, third and last beer in a pub for a while |
