Regular business at the bar with an eclectic range of customers. Thatcher's cider selling well!
Magic Rock - Curious | 3.90 | | Refreshing and citrus flavoured |
Dark Star - Revelation | 5.70 | | One could feel its strength pretty quickly. I felt it became rather cloying towards the end of the pint |
Dark Star - American Pale Ale (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 4.70 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried

Lancaster - Black | 4.50 | Not Tried | Selling really well |
Brooklyn - East India Pale Ale | 6.90 | Not Tried | All the way from the US of A. £3.90 per half, £2.60 per third. I wonder if this was made to queue for hours by the Border Agency on its journey through the airport |
17 May 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
Unusually most customers seated. Medium busy mid evening visit.
Dark Star - Summer Meltdown | 4.80 | | The spice taste hits when about a third of the way down the first pint. A second beckoned with no option for otherwise. |

Around 5ish on May Day bank holiday. Here with daughter plus Pete and his daughter for the SCUM/Vaccines gig at the Centre. Plenty in but not too full, we managed to get a table and enjoyed the setting sun shining in the beer.
Dark Star - Sunburst | 4.80 | | Lemomy, peachy golden ale. Soap-sud head and a bit hazy, really lovely hop that was sweet not harsh. |
Dark Star - Original | 5.00 | | Not sure that this was 5%, maybe we got it wrong. Dark, smokey ale, something like a porter, Really nice. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | A bit sulphuric and cold but still a nice pint, not as good as at the Butcher's though. |
Crouch Vale - Amarillo | 5.00 | Not Tried

Standing room only at dusk on a Saturday late afternoon.
Camden Town - Town Bitter | 3.80 | | Quite a dark bitter, ruby/orange in colour with a good citrus hop character balanced well by sweetish malt. Fruity hop finish. My score 16/20. |

Early evening, it looked from the outside that there may not be any room inside, but, thanks to the large number of customers standing outside, there was plenty of space to enjoy a pint inside.

Came back for Saturday lunchtime session. Getting here from the hotel was a bit of a mission as all of the pavements were like an ice rink.
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | Started with this and it was better than the night before. It's consistancy is as impressive as anything, although I suppose it's the way it's kept here. |
Dark Star - Double Chocolate Stout | 4.50 | | I'm not much of a stout drinker but this was brilliant. Deliciously smooth, choc malt. |
Dark Star - Winter Meltdown | 5.00 | | Bronze colour, bubbly disappearing head, really pretty good, the ginger spice is not over powering, almost excellent. |
Dark Star - Winter Solstice | 4.20 | Not Tried | As I'd had this the night before I decided on a bottle of the Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA which was too gorgeous.... |
Vale - Good King Senseless | 5.20 | Not Tried
18 Dec 2009 (Brian)
Braved the snow and ice to get to Brighton for the Horrors gig at the Concorde, started off here where it was less busy than last week but still pretty full.
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | Super beer. |
Dark Star - Winter Solstice | 4.20 | | Turns out the sweet taste that I couldn't identify is coriander. Really nice this, lightish body with a strong bitter finish. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Little Cracker | 5.00 | Not Tried
Saltaire - Raspberry Blonde | 4.00 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Double Chocolate Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried
Saltaire - White Christmas Ale | 4.50 | Not Tried
12 Dec 2009 (Brian)
Came back the next day. Arrived at mid day when it was quieter than the night before. Sat by the window and watched the punters going to the 2 sex shops across the road...er hum...
Dark Star - American Pale Ale (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 4.70 | | As per the night before |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | It's such an easy drinking beer. Bubbly head that disappeared but the flavour was awesome. |
Dark Star - Winter Solstice | 4.20 | | I expected a really dark winter ale, but this is mid brown in colour and quite light really. A really strange sweet taste that I couldn't place, something like sherbert or cherry drops maybe. Still excellent whatever it was. |
Dark Star - Double Chocolate Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried | Would have had this but we had to catch the slow boat to China, that's to say, the train back to Ashford. |
11 Dec 2009 (Brian)
Arrived here at about 5.30pm, it was absolutely packed. The beer was great, but you had to drink it with both elbows stuck to your ribs. Standing room only.
Dark Star - American Pale Ale (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 4.70 | | Some smelly hop, some pear drops and grapefruit, slightly sweet on the end. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | As usual an excellent, golden ale. |
Dark Star - Winter Solstice | 4.20 | Not Tried
Mad Squirrel (formerly Red Squirrel) - London Porter (now use 5% entry) | 4.50 | Not Tried
20 Mar 2009 (Ian)
Late afternoon and a fair number of good beer drinkers in. Matt was in too behind the bar. Free Wifi which is great. 10 handpumps on with a good range of Dark Star beers and also good Belgian, German and USA beers. I'm still amazed that you can fall out of the railway station straight into this pub. Sat typing up beer ratings, enjoying the beers and the one day cricket on the radio. Oh and then Mark Williams from The Fast Show came in and had a pint of Thatcher's cider. Cool
Dark Star - Sussex Extra Stout | 4.50 | | Very good dry stout. Very drinkable, lots of fruit as well as dry dark roasted malts. Good dryness, charcoal, touch of hop on the finish. I really like it. I'm not much of a dark beer drinker, but this was extremely good I thought. Good carbonation and the dark fruits really make it. What an Irish dry stout should be I guess. Very likeable beer. |
Dark Star - Saison | 4.50 | | More of a wheat beer to me than a saison, cloudy gold/orange colour with lasting thin white hed. Very refreshing though. Bit of soap like a Belgian wit on the aroma. Reasonably fruity in mouth, tangerine/orange, touch of herb/spice. Good bit of tingle on the finish. Good intense fruit and spice. Very good wit, not sure it's a saison. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | Bit of toasted butter. Funny my faovurite British beer and yet here in the Evening Star I very irregularly get a pint of it I like. Great sherberty hops on the finish mind, but the bits up front and in the middle let it down. |
Hogs Back - Utopia | 4.90 | | Amber coloured disappearing off white head. Toffee on the aroma. Quite sweet in the mouth. It's a decent ESB, but the sweetness is a bit over the top. Some peppery hop on the finish. Smooth rounded toffee malt. Drinkable enough. |
Woodforde's - Wherry | 3.80 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
