17 Dec 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Westfield is now in full-scale seasonal panic mode. Tap East is busy with people enjoying a drink before, during, after, or instead of their Christmas shopping. I’m mostly in the third category, with a bit of the fourth.
Hardywood Park - Gingerbread Stout | 9.20 | | From keg dispense. A wonderful, warming Stout with ginger and honey and vanilla. |
Titanic - Plum Porter Grand Reserve | 6.50 | | This really is very good. Perhaps the only reason I haven’t given it five stars was because the next beer was even better. |
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Tonttu | 6.00 | | A very tasty, strong Red IPA, hopped with Enigma. |
Northern Monkey - Noisy Neighbour | 5.00 | | - From a keg of some kind. A murky golden NEIPA. Soft and fruity. |
Tap East - Smokestack Porter | 6.00 | | Currently advertised as 6.1%. It’s a bit flat today and does not shine. |
Tap East - East End Mild | 3.50 | Not Tried
Three Sods - SeSsiON IPA | 4.40 | Not Tried
Tap East - Boleyn Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
11 Dec 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Mid-evening visit. Westfield does not yet have the air of panic that envelopes it as Christmas approaches.
Tempest - Christmas Was Cancelled 1642-60 | 4.50 | | Very pale gold, crisp and hoppy. Not a hint of Christmas about it. |
Cross Bay - Pie a Day | 4.50 | | A Brown Porter that tastes uncannily of mince pie. I’m not sure if this is a good thing. |
Ilkley - Fireside Porter | 4.20 | Not Tried
Tap East - East End Mild | 3.50 | Not Tried
Tap East - Smokestack Porter | 6.50 | Not Tried
Tap East - No. 6 Blonde | 4.10 | Not Tried
10 Nov 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Mid-evening, homeward bound after a day out in Buckinghamshire.
Tap East - Experimental No. 3 | 5.60 | | A chestnut-coloured, fruity, strong Bitter. |
Tap East - Tonic Ale | 3.00 | Not Tried
Tap East - Smokestack Porter | 6.50 | Not Tried
Good Chemistry - Extra Special | 5.60 | Not Tried
08 Oct 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Mid-evening visit.
Great Heck - DAVE | 3.80 | | An old favourite of mine. This is a dark beer, hoppy with lots of chocolate malt. |
Titanic - Plum Porter | 4.90 | Not Tried
Tap East - East End Mild | 3.50 | Not Tried
Tap East - A.P.A. (American Pale Ale) | 4.30 | Not Tried
Tap East - IPA | 6.00 | Not Tried

25 Sep 2018 (Stephen Harris)
A pitstop conveniently placed between London City Airport and home.
Gloucester - No Coffee No Workie | 5.20 | | A coffee-flavoured Pale Ale. It doesn’t really work for me. |
Tap East - East End Mild | 3.50 | Not Tried
First Chop Brewing Arm - HOP | 4.10 | Not Tried
Tap East - Experimental Belgian Pale | 4.50 | Not Tried
Tap East - Experimental No 2 | 9.00 | Not Tried
22 Sep 2018 (Magnus Greel)
Final stop of the day for a swift half before my train home. I often ask myself why I come here, it must be down to the popularity of this place amongst many of the scribes on here who frequent it.
Tap East - APA | 4.30 | | This was superb - everything expected for a full on flavoursome APA. |
Tap East - Tonic Ale | 3.00 | Not Tried
Tap East - IPA | 6.00 | Not Tried
Black Lodge - Excuse Me Sir... | 6.10 | Not Tried
Black Lodge - Taking Liberties | 4.90 | Not Tried
Tap East - Experimental No 2 | 9.00 | Not Tried
20 Sep 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Two new beers are being launched tonight (technically, one of them is actually a relaunch) and quite a big crowd has gathered.
Tap East - Experimental No 2 | 9.00 | | An ‘Imperial’ version of the usual Smokestack Porter. The Smokestack is already one of my favourite beers and this is immense. |
Tap East - Caribeer | 6.20 | | On keg dispense. Not brewed for a couple of years, this beer is still alarmingly red and is flavoured with sorrel. |
Tap East - Tonic Ale | 3.00 | Not Tried
Tap East - IPA | 6.00 | Not Tried
Black Lodge - Excuse Me Sir... | 6.10 | Not Tried
Black Lodge - Taking Liberties | 4.90 | Not Tried
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Etherow | 4.40 | Not Tried
18 Sep 2018 (Philip Pirrip)
Early evening visit before launch off for a train to Kent.
Black Lodge - Taking Liberties | 4.90 | | Why I bought this having had a taster I am not now sure. Allegedly a raspberry ice cream pale, in reality a sickly murk giving too much of a cloying sugar rush and at a rounded £5 a pint too |
Tap East - East End Mild | 3.50 | Not Tried
Tap East - Tonic Ale | 3.00 | Not Tried
Tap East - IPA | 6.00 | Not Tried
Black Lodge - Excuse Me Sir... | 6.10 | Not Tried
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Etherow | 4.40 | Not Tried
17 Sep 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Mid-evening and nice to catch up here with Simon F, who I bump into all too infrequently these days.
Black Lodge - Excuse Me Sir... | 6.10 | | The novelty of these NEIPAs is definitely beginning to ware off with me. It’s very good though. |
Black Lodge - Taking Liberties | 4.90 | | Oh dear, I didn’t like this at all. Murky. Raspberry flavours. Slimy mouthfeel. |
Tap East - East End Mild | 3.50 | Not Tried
Tap East - Tonic Ale | 3.00 | Not Tried
Tap East - Experimental Belgian Pale | 4.50 | Not Tried
10 Sep 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Stood at the bar with Terry L until he had to leave for his quiz fixture nearby. Pub quiet tonight.
Bristol Beer Factory - Negroni | 4.60 | | I’m not familiar with the cocktail of the same name, but I enjoyed this. Alarmingly red in colour. Orange and juniper and herbs. |
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Severinia | 4.10 | | A dry, clear, golden beer. Tastes of lemon pith and peel but with a good malt backbone. |
Northern Whisper - Tittle Tattle | 4.50 | | A Belgian-style Witbier. I’ve probably spent too much time in Belgium recently to give this much of a rating. |
Tap East - East End Mild | 3.50 | Not Tried
Tap East - Smokestack Porter | 6.00 | Not Tried
