News has reached me that the Crate beers have made it on to the bar – better late than never! Pub very busy in the mid-evening, following football at Brisbane Road. Other beers were also available.
Crate - Rye | 5.50 | | Dark and tasty. |
Crate - Porter | 4.10 | | Very good, black Porter. Quickly ran out. |

10 Dec 2014 (Stephen Harris)
The Antic Pub Co. have advertised a showcase of Crate Brewery beers tonight at four of their top real ale outlets (here, the Westow House, the Royal Albert in Deptford and the Red Lion at Leytonstone) and it is definitely happening at least at two of the other places – but no Crate beers here and the barman I ask says it is the first he has heard of it. Never mind; good local beers anyway.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Original Porter | 4.50 | | Excellent, creamy. Brown Porter. |
Signature Brew - Backstage IPA | 5.60 | | Pale gold, dry and bitter. |

After weeks of hassle from the TV Licencing people, I decided to invest in one of their pieces of paper. Next logical step seems to be to buy a TV set. So I was on my way to Asda (apparently everyone buys their TVs at supermarkets these days) when I was waylaid and ended up in here. Oh well.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Original Porter | 4.50 | | Very good. Good enough to be setting the benchmark for London-style Porters I think. |
Adnams - 1659 Smoked Ruby Beer | 4.70 | | Smoked beers could well be the next big thing. And this one is good and smoky. |
Signature Brew - Signature Pale | 4.10 | | Signature Brew beers seem massively to have improved since they started brewing on their own plant in London. This is golden and has beautiful flavours from Magnum, Cascade and Perle hops. |
Late Knights - Worm Catcher IPA | 5.00 | Not Tried
Signature Brew - Candela Gold | 5.00 | Not Tried | Ran out. |
28 Oct 2014 (Stephen Harris)
Very busy in the approach to an evening football match at Brisbane Road.

Adnams - Topaz Gold | 4.00 | Not Tried

I seemed to spend a large part of today in this pub. There was a special early opening for brunch, and live TV coverage throughout the day of the Tour de France. The race itself passed a few hundred yards away and we joined a large crowd who rushed back here after the peleton had zoomed by in order to watch the closing stages on the big screen.
Castle Rock - Harvest Pale | 3.80 | | Still one of the best pale beers around. |
Redemption - Rock the Kazbek | 4.00 | | This one is definitely growing on me. |
Adnams - Mosaic Pale Ale | 4.10 | | Lovely. |
Adnams - Topaz Gold | 4.00 | | A pretty good, hoppy pint. |
Adnams - Broadside | 4.70 | Not Tried
Thwaites - Lancaster Bomber (please now use the Banks's entry) | 4.40 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Atlantic IPA (now replaced by 4.2% Atlantic) | 4.80 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Coaster (or Cornish Coaster) | 3.60 | Not Tried
Redemption - Big Chief | 5.50 | Not Tried
18 Jun 2014 (Stephen Harris)
Mid-evening to watch the Spain v Chile game. Lots of Spanish-speaking customers in, from a variety of Spanish-speaking countries.
Adnams - Fat Sprat | 3.80 | | I do like this beer and would not be unhappy if it became a permanent addition to the Adnams range. |
King Beer (formerly W.J. King) - Hopa Cabana | 4.20 | | My memory of Brazilian beer is that it is not noted for its hop content, but this ‘Brazilian’ beer is golden, crisp, hoppy and citrusy. Pretty good I thought. |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Arkell's - 3B | 4.00 | Not Tried
Yeovil - Ruby | 4.50 | Not Tried
Wild Card - Jack of Clubs | 4.50 | Not Tried

East London (ELB) - Foundation Bitter | 4.20 | | Darkish amber in colour. Full-bodied, rich, malty, some chocolate flavours. |
Tyne Bank - Single Blonde | 3.50 | | A golden-coloured Light Ale. Relatively subtle hops. Served in rather flat condition. |
Flipside - Farthing Mild | 3.60 | | Dark ruby-red. Fruity and tangy. |

Otley - O3 Boss | 4.40 | Not Tried

12 May 2014 (Stephen Harris)
Early to mid-evening. The pub’s kitchen is open tonight – I think the first time it has opened on a Monday. This has immediately brought in a few extra customers.
Adnams - Fat Sprat | 3.80 | | Nice to see this beer back on the bar. A smooth, bitter, amber-coloured beer. |
First Chop Brewing Arm - SIP | 5.40 | | SIP stands for South Island Pale. A hazy yellow/orange coloured, (presumably) unfiltered, hoppy beer. |
Adnams - Broadside | 4.70 | Not Tried
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
