Lunchtime and crowded. Some people were getting a little irate because rugby union was being shown on a big screen (no-body watching) and they wanted the Arsenal v Chelsea game instead.

First night of the pub’s second anniversary beer festival, although with just three stillage beers available it has barely yet got going. Busy nonetheless.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Signature Brew - Session4.00GoodStandard, chestnut-coloured Bitter from Leyton’s newest brewery; indeed the brewery launch party is not until Saturday. I don’t always enjoy this style anymore, but this went down well, I think probably because it has superior hops although this did not appear to be the NZ-hopped version.
Sharp's - Point Break4.60GoodA golden beer and a slightly different take on the Blonde style. There is a hop presence, and it is also a little sweet and has toffee flavours.

Quiz night in here – I missed the start so, obviously, all the questions appeared to be easy-peesie.

Farewell drinks for a good friend and neighbour who has sold up his Leytonstone flat, packed in work and is setting off to travel the world on the proceeds. Around a dozen envious friends here to wish him well. The big news at the pub is that Antic have withdrawn the CAMRA discount from all their pubs – something to do with the fact that they now have their own brewery.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Adnams - The Herbalist (collaboration with Magic Rock)4.80ExcellentA few of these were polished off. Very tasty beer, in superb condition here.
London Fields - Black Path Porter4.20GoodLondon Fields are currently having to brew their beers away from their own brewery – at Tom Woods and at Franklins I believe. This black beer had a good chocolate taste but fell flat quickly in the glass.

Back in London after travels and good to be on familiar ground. Busy, particularly after I gave up my seat to a needy customer.

Clarence & Fredericks - American Pale Ale4.50GoodTasty.

Pre-match drink ahead of football at Brisbane Road. The pub is full to bursting point.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur5.90ExcellentThe appropriate, hoppy, strong, antidote to the Red Ale I just drank accidentally.
King Beer (formerly W.J. King) - Black Symphony with juniper5.00GoodThe first mouthful of this black Porter was very promising. Rich, chocolaty and slightly sour. But the tastes soon dissipated as the beer quickly fell flat in the glass. A ‘good’ on balance I think.
Castle Rock - Red Riding Hood4.30AcceptableA Red Ale. Red Ales by law should be obliged to have the words ‘WARNING - RED ALE’ in huge letters on the pump clip, rather than just slipping in a subtle little ‘red’ into the beer name, so that thickos like me are sufficiently warned off.

The implications of so many pub closures in Leyton are being felt here with this pub seemingly perpetually crowded. Tonight the kitchen is running out of food by 8pm, there is a crush at the bar, standing room only in all three rooms and no space for the CAMRA meeting for which we had thought a private room had been booked.
BeerABVScoreNotes
London Fields - Shoreditch Triangle IPA6.00ExcellentExcellent stuff – there are enough hops in here to last me a week at least.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Original Porter4.50ExcellentI do like this beer, although it is not helping with my current hop cravings.

Evening visit until late to celebrate a friend’s birthday, but emphatically not to celebrate the result of the football match played out around the corner earlier on. Very busy. Increasingly loud music as the evening progressed.

The pub is found in Leyton, Greater London, E10 5OJ.

In High Road, initially this pub existed as a short-term ‘Pop-Up’ pub, open for the duration of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Then closed for nearly a year, it re-opened on a permanent basis in August 2013. The pub is housed in part of the former Leyton Town Hall. It has several different rooms in which to drink, and the toilets are housed deep in the dungeons. The interior of the pub is now very much more homely and comfortable than it appears in my early photo on this site from its pop-up days. Reclaimed by landlord and closed on October 2022, after alleged non-payment of rent. Re-opened under operation of Remarkable Pubs with a change of name in September 2024.

We have visited this pub 125 times, seen 256 different beers and tried 139 of them.
