Lunchtime and crowded. Some people were getting a little irate because rugby union was being shown on a big screen (no-body watching) and they wanted the Arsenal v Chelsea game instead.
Rudgate - Brew No. 8 Cherry Pale | 3.80 | | Red in colour. Heavily flavoured with cherry. Too heavily for me. |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur | 5.90 | Not Tried
Volden - VIM | 3.80 | Not Tried
06 Aug 2015 (Stephen Harris)
First night of the pub’s second anniversary beer festival, although with just three stillage beers available it has barely yet got going. Busy nonetheless.
Signature Brew - Session | 4.00 | | Standard, chestnut-coloured Bitter from Leyton’s newest brewery; indeed the brewery launch party is not until Saturday. I don’t always enjoy this style anymore, but this went down well, I think probably because it has superior hops although this did not appear to be the NZ-hopped version. |
Sharp's - Point Break | 4.60 | | A golden beer and a slightly different take on the Blonde style. There is a hop presence, and it is also a little sweet and has toffee flavours. |
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | Ran out (ever popular). |
Redemption - Pale Ale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Samuel Adams Blonde Ambition | 4.50 | Not Tried
Redemption - Rock the Kazbek | 4.00 | Not Tried
Volden - VIM | 3.80 | Not Tried
01 Jul 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Quiz night in here – I missed the start so, obviously, all the questions appeared to be easy-peesie.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur | 5.90 | | Just the job on a hot and muggy evening. |
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Exmoor - Silver Stallion | 4.30 | Not Tried
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Lazarus | 4.20 | Not Tried
Southwark - Potters' Fields Porter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Volden - VIM | 3.80 | Not Tried
21 May 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Farewell drinks for a good friend and neighbour who has sold up his Leytonstone flat, packed in work and is setting off to travel the world on the proceeds. Around a dozen envious friends here to wish him well. The big news at the pub is that Antic have withdrawn the CAMRA discount from all their pubs – something to do with the fact that they now have their own brewery.
Adnams - The Herbalist (collaboration with Magic Rock) | 4.80 | | A few of these were polished off. Very tasty beer, in superb condition here. |
London Fields - Black Path Porter | 4.20 | | London Fields are currently having to brew their beers away from their own brewery – at Tom Woods and at Franklins I believe. This black beer had a good chocolate taste but fell flat quickly in the glass. |
Adnams - Broadside | 4.70 | Not Tried
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Budburst | 4.20 | Not Tried
Volden - VIM | 3.80 | Not Tried
26 Mar 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Back in London after travels and good to be on familiar ground. Busy, particularly after I gave up my seat to a needy customer.
Redemption - Trinity | 3.00
Clarence & Fredericks - American Pale Ale | 4.50 | | Tasty. |
Magic Rock - Retrospect | 4.80 | | A chestnut-coloured Best Bitter. Unusual territory for Magic Rock, but as usual they do it very well. |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Tiny Rebel - Cwtch | 4.60 | Not Tried
Clarence & Fredericks - IPA | 5.20 | Not Tried
Robinsons - Trooper (superseded by 4.7% version) | 4.80 | Not Tried
21 Feb 2015 (Stephen Harris)
A quick one on passing after football at Brisbane Road. Very busy.
Southwark - Bermondsey Best | 4.40 | | Fruity. Very fruity. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Adnams - Lighthouse | 3.40 | Not Tried
Signature Brew - Red Wedge | 4.70 | Not Tried
10 Feb 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Pre-match drink ahead of football at Brisbane Road. The pub is full to bursting point.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur | 5.90 | | The appropriate, hoppy, strong, antidote to the Red Ale I just drank accidentally. |
King Beer (formerly W.J. King) - Black Symphony with juniper | 5.00 | | The first mouthful of this black Porter was very promising. Rich, chocolaty and slightly sour. But the tastes soon dissipated as the beer quickly fell flat in the glass. A ‘good’ on balance I think. |
Castle Rock - Red Riding Hood | 4.30 | | A Red Ale. Red Ales by law should be obliged to have the words ‘WARNING - RED ALE’ in huge letters on the pump clip, rather than just slipping in a subtle little ‘red’ into the beer name, so that thickos like me are sufficiently warned off. |
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
King Beer (formerly W.J. King) - Brighton Best | 4.00 | Not Tried
14 Jan 2015 (Stephen Harris)
The implications of so many pub closures in Leyton are being felt here with this pub seemingly perpetually crowded. Tonight the kitchen is running out of food by 8pm, there is a crush at the bar, standing room only in all three rooms and no space for the CAMRA meeting for which we had thought a private room had been booked.
London Fields - Shoreditch Triangle IPA | 6.00 | | Excellent stuff – there are enough hops in here to last me a week at least. |
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Original Porter | 4.50 | | I do like this beer, although it is not helping with my current hop cravings. |
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Adnams - Lighthouse | 3.40 | Not Tried
Bristol Beer Factory - Milk Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried
10 Jan 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Evening visit until late to celebrate a friend’s birthday, but emphatically not to celebrate the result of the football match played out around the corner earlier on. Very busy. Increasingly loud music as the evening progressed.
London Fields - Shoreditch Triangle IPA | 6.00 | | A strong and fierce IPA |
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Original Porter | 4.50 | | A very good Porter, in my view. |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur | 5.90 | Not Tried
Adnams - Lighthouse | 3.40 | Not Tried
Castle Rock - Snowhite | 4.20 | Not Tried
08 Jan 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Some of us came here after the brewery visit to ELB (via a quick stop at the Drum in Leyton). 10pm and busy here – nice to see that there are some people out visiting pubs in January.
Adnams - Tally-Ho | 7.00 | | Dark and strong. |
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Runner | 4.00 | | Reddish-brown bitter on good form tonight. |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Adnams - Lighthouse | 3.40 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Atlantic Pale Ale | 4.20 | Not Tried
