Mid afternoon- I cycled nearly thirty miles to get here and was thirsty. All drinks being served from a table outside the front door. No entrance to the pub but it was warm and a good number of people around the front and in the garden. The garden has an old roadside signpost that was removed from the T junction outside - much more info than the replacement sign but impossible to see from the road. A lovely touch.

Evening visit from 19:00 opening, although we were the first customers the bar soon became full. I purchased some instant raffle tickets and won some jelly babies, wine gums and a bottle of pear cider which had a list of ingredients on the label that will ensure that I don't drink it. Love the jelly babies though, a most enjoyable evening.

About the Red Lion

The pub sign. Red Lion, Snargate, Kent

Summary of Beer Scores

The pub is found in Snargate, Kent, TN29 9UQ.

One of the best pubs in England. It's in CAMRA's national pub inventory because it hasn't really changed much in the last 100 years. In fact in 2011 the Jemison family celebrated 100 years of running the pub. All beers are on gravity and Goacher's is a regular. It's locally known as Doris's after the last landlady. Before that it was Alf's. A 20 minute (no more no less) brisk walk from / to Appledore railway station. Local CAMRA branch Pub of the Year 2015. The handpumps atop the pewter bar counter were used once upon a time but not now. Extensive garden for fair-weather use. Regrettably Doris died in April 2016. The pub closed for some weeks as a result of the bereavement. Re-opened, hopefully forever, on Saturday 11th June 2016. Presume it will soon become known as Kate's! Closed late September 2020 for Covid reasons as outside only drinking impossible once cooler weather ensued.

We have visited this pub 127 times, seen 196 different beers and tried 124 of them.
