Lunchtime visit, very good and friendly service from a knowledgeable lady behind the bar. Camra discount given and a pint absolutely full to the brim. We stayed longer than planned as the heavens opened up and then we found out that there were trespassers somewhere on the North London Line so we drank beer until the trains started running again.
Otter - Ale | 4.50 | | |
Nene Valley - Manhattan Project | 4.00
Reunion - Incredible Pale Ale | 5.00 | Not Tried
19 Sep 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening after to work to meet my mate Dave R. We talk of country walks and nature reserves.
Otter - Ale | 4.50 | | Exactly what you’d expect from a Best Bitter. |
New River - Five-Inch Drop | 4.60 | | Amber-coloured, with a good balance of both malt and hop flavours. |
Redemption - Big Chief | 5.50 | Not Tried | Not often that I ignore the Big Chief when present. |

I really like this pub, and it is good to be here on a non-festival day when it is not crowded. I like the background music (Cream, the Animals), I like the black and white photos of musicians and film stars (Debbie Harry, Janis Joplin) and I like the beer.
Kent - Zingiber | 4.10 | | Superior ginger beer. |
Crouch Vale - Boadicea | 4.10 | | Best pint of the evening. Light, hoppy and refreshing. |
Otter - Ale | 4.50 | Not Tried
Hackney - Golden Ale | 4.00 | Not Tried

My chance at last to catch up with some of this year’s Kent Green Hop beers (and a couple of London ones too) at this busy little beer festival. I list all the Green Hop beers that were on – there were some other real ales available too.
Wantsum - Green Hop Bramling Cross | 4.50 | | Lovely, floral, fruity, Pale Ale. |
Pig & Porter - Strangely Brown | 4.40 | | A dark, chocolaty Porter, brewed with fresh EKG. |
Pig & Porter - Purest Green | 4.50 | | Plenty of fresh EKG giving this pale beer a great, hoppy character. |
Time and Tide - Green Hop Pale | 5.10 | | Full-on Green Hop beer brewed using Challenger and Cascade hops. |
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Bethnal Green Hop | 5.50 | | A stronger, richer version of the brewery’s Runner, brewed using fresh hops from Spitalfields City Farm. The hop flavours are actually quite subtle in this one. |
Caveman (latterly a cuckoo at Leatherbritches) - Hunter Gatherer | 3.50 | | A pale beer with some oats in the grist and a big EKG hop character. |
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - Auburn Green | 4.30 | | Copper-coloured bitter with fresh EKG. |
East London (ELB) - Walthamstow Beer | 3.80 | | An aromatic, pale beer brewed using fresh hops from Walthamstow gardens. Just a little lacking in body I thought. |

Kent - Green Giant | 6.00 | Not Tried

I’ve spent the day at the Cereals 2014 show in Cambridgeshire and this pub was a convenient place to stop for a pint on the way to an event later in Hackney. Starting to fill with customers at around 6pm.
Windsor & Eton - Maracanã | 4.00 | | Enjoyably bitter, blond ale. |
Hop Back - Summer Lightning | 5.00 | Not Tried

“Steel City Calling” beer festival in progress, featuring beers from Sheffield and around. Very busy, but luckily it is a mild evening and plenty are standing outside. I found the handpumped beers to be in rather better condition than those from the stillage.
Raw / Steel City Collaboration - Unholy Trinity | 6.60 | | A well-hopped, chocolaty, black stout. Very full-flavoured. |
Steel City (cuckoo at Toolmakers) - All Hallows Eve | 5.20 | | Golden. Big hop tastes from Citra and Sorachi Ace amongst others. |
Tigertops - Resolution | 3.90 | | Another very nice, golden, hoppy pint. |
Magic Rock - Punch Line: Chocolate & Chipotle Porter | 5.40 | | Superb chilly choc. |
Harthill Village - Hart Stopper | 4.00 | | A pale and hoppy beer, flavours diminished somewhat by slightly tired condition. |
Steel City (cuckoo at Toolmakers) - Phantom of the Hopera | 4.90 | | A typically hoppy offering from Steel City (who now brew on the Toolmakers brew-plant in Sheffield). |

Another beer festival here, and the pub is predictably crowded in the evening. I left just as Pete Brown was arriving to do a book signing.
Leeds - New Moon | 4.60 | | In the black IPA style – lots of New World hop flavours. |
AllGates - Hic Bibi (was called Citra Single Hop) | 4.20 | | Pronounced Citra hop character. |
Treboom - Yorkshire Sparkle | 4.00 | | Very pale, citrusy hop character – and, yes, a bit of sparkle. |
Steel City (cuckoo at Toolmakers) - Cluster Bomb | 4.70 | | Slightly hazy gold colour. Good balance of malt and hops. |
Marble - Hoppy New Beer | 4.00 | | Pale, dry and hoppy. Features Galaxy hops. |
Offbeat - Project Venus - Venus Ella | 4.40 | | Another ‘Project Venus’ collaboration beer – a golden bitter, singularly hopped with Ella hops from Australia. |
Brightside - Manchester Skyline | 4.60 | | Amber in colour. A fairly traditional best bitter, with above average hops. |

Top of the Hops beer festival in progress with stillage at front of the pub.
Robinsons - Green Bullet Pale Ale | 4.40 | | Amber in colour with lots of signature malt flavour but little on the hop front. Biscuity malt in the finish. My score 15/20. |
Wold Top - Big Sky Bitter | 3.90 | | Amber bitter, very bitter with a rather one dimensional bitter hop flavour to the exclusion of any other flavours. My score 13/20. |
Exit 33 (formerly The Brew Company then Sky's Edge) - Wishbone | 4.00 | | Very pale straw coloured bitter with dry, bitter hop character and a little citrus flavour. A little unbalanced for my taste. My score 14/20. |
Ascot - N5 Surprise | 4.60 | | Golden and hoppy with a dry, bitter hop character and little balance of flavour that is not to my taste. My score 13/20. |
Binghams - Rattlesnake Rye Pale Ale | 5.00 | | Amber strong bitter with a strong bitter hop character with some citrus flavours. Very dry, hoppy finish. Brewed in collaboration with USA brewery Library using Rye malt. My score 14/20. |
