Mid afternoon just a few others in this trendy yet cosy and friendly pub, somewhat different to Harvey's usual pubs. Tasters were offered without prompting.

I sat in the front bar which was fairly quiet, the rear bar and garden were doing a fair trade. The kitchen staff came out with some bread and olives for the bar, these were demolished by the bar staff, myself and the customer sitting at the bar.

Evening visit. Almost everyone seemed to be billing their drinks to a tab. Was as sad to see Harveys keg beers here as I was to see Harveys canned beers at its brewery shop earlier.

Evening. First time I have been here since the rear bar has been open but apparently the bar counter there is never staffed nor its 2 handpumps used.

Evening. Initially went to the wrong High Street but found it after a right puff and pant up the hill. Felt it was still bedding in but time will tell.

The pub is found in Lewes, East Sussex, BN7 1YE.

Located next door to Lewes Crown Court in the High Street (not Cliffe High Street but the one "up the hill") a December 2012 opening conversion of what was previously Lincolns Bar and the Rainbow before that. Named in honour of the seminal work written by Lewes resident Thomas Paine – a book which inspired both the French and American revolutions. It’s over 200 years since he lived in Lewes but at last there is a prominent building in the town to commemorate Thomas Paine, situated next to the Law Courts and just opposite his lodgings at Bull House. Of course Harveys brews and sells a beer called Tom Paine Ale as a summer seasonal! At opening the pub consisted of a front bar opening on to the High Street, Subsequently, although it shares the same name, the rear bar (Martyrs' Bar) of the building opened as effectively a separate pub with its own character and the only entrance to this was via an entrance from Pope's Passage which links the High Street and Castle Ditch Lane. Later still this extra bar with 2 handpumps was effectively combined with the main bar with access also from the rear of the main bar. Also added later was a roof terrace laid with Astroturf (later wooden decking) with access via the staircase in the front bar. Second "pub" opened in mid 2013 and both pubs share a common kitchen. The front bar sports 6 handpumps and comprises a small carpeted raised area by the High Street entrance and 3 narrow booths variously wall-bench and table and chair furnished. Very bright mock chandeliers light the behind the bar area and toilets are up a flight of stairs. Rights of Man has been given a complete makeover to create a traditional ale house with cosy old fashioned booths, etched glass and wood panelling.

We have visited this pub 8 times, seen 14 different beers and tried 6 of them.
