The Mole Hole (Free House)
Visits Details
24 Jan 2026 (Hogan Sampling)
5th stop of the outing: A contrast with my last attempted visit just before Christmas when a live band was performing Christmas numbers quite early evening which meant that this basement micro was practically full. This time around our party of two were the only customers early evening. Immediate, friendly service from the usual barman on, and as is customary, three cask ale to choose from, and one being their regular house beer, Iron Pier's Mole Hole Pale Ale. This is this micro's name for the local Northfleet brewery's Perry Street Pale. The micro used to open 12 noon on a Saturday over recent years but now from 5pm. Despite being in the Heritage Quarter which is Gravesend's old high street and on the way to the riverfront and the ever-popular Three Daw's pub/restaurant, this micro seems to have consistently less footfall except when bands are on or an evening quiz is on as I recall was the case on a September visit last year. They seem to try very hard, the groups of friends running it, but it seems to be only ever full of one specific crowd or empty which is a shame.
| Kent - Cobnut | 4.10 | | Very good head and lacing and lasting on this Birling-brewed ruby ale from north of West Malling in Kent. A very dry bitter first bite. A hoppiness scrambling up from its traditional English hop varieties but a closely guarded secret mix that exudes earthy, spicy and subtle floral notes and certainly not too fruity. A good bitter fruitiness scurrying on the taste buds with many a dark fruit in its flotilla such as red berries and plums. A dry fruited maltiness with toasted malt flavours with hints of biscuit and toffee scampering downwards. Named after the Kentish cobnut, a type of hazelnut but certainly not a nutty flavouring to it that I could tell. In better condition than when I supped it back in October of last year. |
| Iron Pier - Perry St Pale | 3.70 | Not Tried | Badged as Mole Hole Pale Ale. |
| Kent - Aztec | 4.90 | Not Tried | |

4th visit of the outing: a live band performing Christmas numbers quite early evening meant this basement micro was practically full. Did make it to the bar and saw a brown ale I would have tried but the bar staff member must have been otherwise engaged collecting up a good few glasses and so moved on. I recall seeing about 3 real ales on in total including their usual Mole Hole Pale Ale from the local microbrewery at Northfleet, Iron Pier, but did not note the other two.

5th visit of the outing: Just one other small group in for our early evening arrival. Again, this micropub had been shut earlier in the afternoon, as it was on my visit in September, and when we walked past although clearly stated on its entrance door that it opens at noon on a Saturday. As our small group settled in, the one other small group departed. Choice of the usual three real ales on and still only charging £4.00 a pint for the average strength real ale. Only Spoons beats that of all the real ale drinking holes I have visited in Gravesend. Needless to say, prompt, friendly service from the two bar staff on. Needs to make its mind up and advertise its correct opening hours to attract perhaps more custom on a Saturday.
| Kent - Cobnut | 4.10 | | Good head and lacing on this ruby ale, named after the Kentish cobnut, a type of hazelnut. Brewed in Birling, north of West Malling in Kent, its head and lacing did not last for long on my mere half a pint. A fruity bitter first bite. A dry malty dryness rising with toasted malt flavours leaping up. A hint of nuttiness though no nuts were harmed in its making. A fruited hoppiness with many a dark fruit in its flotilla sailing out. |

This micropub was literally packed in its basement setting and for a quiz early Saturday evening. It was shut mid-afternoon when I first passed it although said to be open from mid-day Saturdays. Nothing on the outside to warn you of the quiz and that it is therefore likely to be full in the main bar. They have a rear room in the basement where it perhaps could be held or where if not taking part in the quiz, you can sup your ale or two. I opted to stand in the downstairs passage with my half. The bar in the main room the quiz was in was stiflingly hot, no doubt from all that body heat being generated.
| Timothy Taylor - Boltmaker (formerly Best Bitter) | 4.00 | | Good head and lacing and lasting on this Yorkshire bitter from Keighley, north-west of Leeds. A very dry bitter first hit. A good touch of maltiness rising from its Golden Promise, Crystal Malt, Amber Malt, Munich Malt and Brown Malt. A pleasantly bitter mouthfeel. A hop-infused bitterness playing out from its Whitbread Golding Variety/Goldings, Fuggles and Savinjski Goldings. Very reasonably-priced here at just £4.00 a pint for your average strength ale. |
| Titanic - Plum Porter | 4.90 | Not Tried | |
| Iron Pier - Perry St Pale | 3.70 | Not Tried | Badged as Mole Hole Pale Ale. |

Not busy at all for my party of two's arrival late afternoon. A party of at least six arrived just as we were leaving. It can get very noisy with no sound absorption in this micropub's basement bar with just the bare bricks on show on the walls and with the curved ceilings also made of bricks. Very attentive service from the staff on and with three of them no less.
| Big Hand - Bastion Best Bitter | 4.20 | | Very good head and lacing indeed on this best bitter from just east of Wrexham in Wales. A dry, hoppy mouthfeel with a dry bitterness lingering. Very moreish and in great condition. Just £4.00 a pint for this at 4.2% and so nothing not to like at all! |
| Leigh on Sea - Kursaal Gold | 3.90 | | Not tried a Leigh on Sea ale since my last visit to that part of the world in September 2024 and so a pleasant surprise to see it here. A "loveleigh" golden ale, and as so spelt, it proved to be with much head and lacing. A fruity and hoppy first hit. A very dry mouthfeel and moreish aftertaste lingering. Made up for the bad beer in the Three Daws earlier. Only ever 3 beers on here and so they keep fresh which also helps. |
| Iron Pier - The Mole Hole Pale Ale | 3.70 | Not Tried | The house beer that is a regular here. |

Mid afternoon fairly quiet plenty of free tables for our group to spread out. Friendly welcome from the staff who coped well with our short stay.
| Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Wife of Bath's Ale | 3.90 | | Peaty earthy hoppy ale |
| Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Miller's Ale (originally 4.5%) | 4.20 | Not Tried | |
| Industrial Ales - Coal Face Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Iron Pier - The Mole Hole Pale Ale | 3.70 | Not Tried | |
| Dorking - Winter's Coming | 4.50 | Not Tried | |

Evening visit until 10pm close. My first visit. Very friendly behind the bar. Apparently a group of 12 Rugby associated friends have set up the venture. They are well aware of the noise echoing here and have already started with some noise baffling provisions. Just annoying CAMRA discount was not proffered, I found out only afterwards.
| Iron Pier - The Mole Hole Pale Ale | 3.70 | | Re-badged Perry St Pale. I liked this more than previous Perry St Pale examples, if a little too chilled with significant condensation on the glass |
| Flying Monk - WPA | 4.60 | | A bit tired |
| Dorking - Red India Ale | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Dorking - Black Noise | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
