| Hogan Sampling | | 18 Apr 2026 | 1st beer of this visit: Third day on for this Erith-brewed session bitter and still displaying a good head and lacing and holding it well. A lightly hoppy first hit. A fruited hoppiness rising and likely to be from UK hop varieties such as Ernest with hints of stone fruits and floral flavours emanating from apricots, peaches and plums. A maltiness winning over with biscuity, caramelised toffee emanating from its English malted barley. A hop-infused bitterness playing out aided by its Kentish Admiral lending it its bittering taste. Thin tasting given its lesser gravity and also minus the conditioning it had when fresh on two days earlier. |
| Philip Pirrip | | 16 Apr 2026 | New cask on today. Maltier and less bitter than I recall from past samples |
| Hogan Sampling | | 16 Apr 2026 | 1st beer of this visit: Fresh on was this traditional session bitter from Erith and from the first brewery to open in the Borough of Bexley since the closure in 1956 of Reffells founded in 1874 by Henry Reffell and which grew to become Bexley's oldest industrial establishment.* Very good head and lacing and lasting all the way on this brew. It grew out of one of Bexley Brewery's founder’s home-brewing days and named after the local Bursted Wood. A very fruited first bite from this tawny-coloured bitter. A fruity bitterness rapidly rising aided by its Kentish hops, including Admiral for its bittering. Touches of soft stone fruits with floral flavours for me found in apricots, peaches and plums, are likely to be emanating from modern UK hop varieties such as Ernest to impart its sweet spiciness and peachy flavours. A biscuity maltiness winning over with hints of toffee and caramel from its English malted barley. A good outflow of dry hop-bitterness prevailing in the aftertaste. Perhaps just a tad too fresh. *In June 1956, the business and its 19 tied public houses were bought by Courage & Barclay** and brewing ceased shortly after in 1957. ** Courage & Barclay became a major British brewing entity formed by the 1955 merger of two historic London breweries: Courage & Co. Ltd and Barclay, Perkins & Co. Ltd. |

| Philip Pirrip | | 08 Feb 2026 | Very good condition and full flavour for a 3.4% ale |
| Hogan Sampling | | 08 Feb 2026 | 1st beer of this visit: Second day on and better for it was this bitter. Presently perhaps an even better head than the evening before on this Erith-brewed dark amber session bitter from the Bexley borough. Such a shame it was low gravity at just 3.4% as otherwise might have been afforded more flavour, though I was not the only one of the regulars to detect that the range of beers this evening seemed noticeably at a cooler temperature compared to the recent norm. Defiantly, it displayed excellent lacing but for a slightly cooler offering than is usual. Still a very dry bitter first bite which was unmistakable. Still an ever so lightly fruited bitterness. Still that hint of pine, plus hints of stone fruit. Kentish hops lending it a hoppy mouthfeel and Crystal malts adding their flavours, including a subtle biscuity, caramel and toffee infusion. A hop-infused piney touch playing out with a fruity kick afforded. Once again, for being in such good nick appearance-wise with its head and lacing, a pity it was so low gravity since it continued from the evening before in lacking distinct hoppy flavouring to my taste buds. Less watery though than the evening before! |
| Hogan Sampling | | 07 Feb 2026 | 1st beer of this visit: Fresh on today with a very good head on this Erith-brewed dark amber session bitter from the Bexley borough. Its lacing staying firmly attached to the glass. A very dry bitter first bite. A lightly fruited bitterness rising with hints of pine and stone fruit, including apricot and plum. Kentish hops providing a traditional home-grown flavouring while the varieties are not listed for this brew. Only a distant hint of maltiness from its combination of Crystal malts for me despite being described as full of malty flavour. A dry piney hoppiness lingering with subtle biscuity, caramel and toffee notes. It was somewhat lacklustre in flavouring I thought and slightly watery as a result. |
| Philip Pirrip | Not Tried | 28 Aug 2025 | Got cask label checked as confusion over ABV. It is now a beer duty avoider ale |
| Hogan Sampling | | 28 Aug 2025 | 3rd evening on for this Bexley dark amber bitter from Erith but now lacking much of its sparkle just two evenings earlier. Head and lacing, fair, and lasting, poor. I got back into my decanting mode having had the evening off needing to do this on Tuesday when fresh on. A very dry bitter first bite. A hoppy bitterness rising aided by its Kentish hops. A lightly fruited maltiness coming to the fore and now with a hint of toffee flavouring. It sailed out still with its very old-fashioned bitterness prevailing. Not so moreish as when fresh on a couple evenings before as not so full of conditioning and so just one more sufficed before sampling a few new ones on. |
| Philip Pirrip | | 27 Aug 2025 | OK but little condition or flavour |
| Hogan Sampling | | 26 Aug 2025 | Fresh on this evening was this lively Bexley dark amber bitter from Erith. It came as a relief after the very tired Siren Craft Memento bitter the evening before that certainly tasted as though it was at its end. This one presented very good head and lacing and not a single decant was called for. I almost had to stop myself from decanting out of habit and not out of need as in this case. Its abundant lacing lasted throughout its tasty performance. A very bitter first bite to it. A fine hoppy bitterness rising aided by its Kentish hops. A touch of maltiness presenting itself but nothing like as malty as the Bexley Redhouse bitter that was on for 5 nights the week before and so perhaps a tad too malty for many including me was the Redhouse! This one by comparison hit all the right notes on my taste buds and not in the least fruity, although said to have soft fruity notes and a hint of toffee which I could not readily detect. It came as how I like it and from this very old-fashioned bitter-tasting beer. A good balanced malty bitterness playing out. Very moreish and so stuck to it. |
| Hogan Sampling | | 04 Mar 2025 | Fresh on this evening and to welcome the fans back from their game. Very good head and lacing on this Erith-based brewery's bitter. A dry bitter first hit. A maltiness lingered in the mouthfeel and not sweet despite a mention of a biscuity taste. A moreishly dry aftertaste meant I stuck to it apart from a couple of halves of other favourites to end on. |
| Hogan Sampling | | 16 Nov 2024 | For almost the last one out of the barrel, it was still holding its head and lacing well. Had a pleasantly malty lingering mouthfeel with a bitter aftertaste. |

| Philip Pirrip | | 14 Nov 2024 | New cask on today. A nice refreshing pint |
| Hogan Sampling | | 14 Nov 2024 | Very good head and lacing. A slightly less bitter taste than I favour as an ever so slightly sweet, malty mouthfeel with a dry finish. |
| Philip Pirrip | | 12 Jun 2024 | Could have done with more natural carbonation |
