Tasting Summary

These comments are the opinion of the individual reviewer and represent what they thought of the beer on a particular day in a particular pub. If a review is less favourable, it may be because the beer suffered somewhere in the supply chain between them and the brewery.

Trigger's Broom, St Peter's, Kent

Hogan SamplingGood30 May 2026 1st beer of this visit: Very good head and lacing presented on this Cromwell-brewed English blonde/golden bitter from Nottinghamshire, just north of Newark, and where the brewery was set up in 2004. Here served on gravity dispense from the jacketed cask on racking behind the small bar counter. A dry bitter first sweep across my taste buds with a herbal freshness and subtle cedarwood spice. A hoppy bitterness rising from its British Challenger, behind its earthy flavours and subtle citrus and sweet floral hints, and Progress hops, behind its notes of honey and delicate dark fruits such as blackcurrant. A caramelised maltiness, likely to be from Maris Otter or Golden Promise malts, with a subtle honey grassy sweetness sweeping out. Served in fine fettle and superbly priced at just £4.50 a pint. CONTINUED FROM GENERAL COMMENTS ENTRY FOR THIS VISIT: The name of the Four Candles Alehouse was of course based on the Two Ronnies tv comedy sketch featuring Ronnie Barker asking, got any fork 'andles and being given four candles in error by Ronnie Corbett. The sketch is based on Harrington’s hardware shop in Broadstairs and opposite the Sonder pub and close to where Ronnie Corbett had a holiday flat and when Barker came to visit, he got his sketch ideas from nearby Harrington’s. In the case of Trigger’s Broom and the local connection, there was the wonderful Only Fools and Horses’ Christmas special, The Jolly Boys’ Outing, and which took them to nearby Margate by coach, and before they managed to blow it up, and featuring Trigger famously parading a blow-up dolphin around and including on his rides in Dreamland Amusement Park. AT THE TIME OF THIS VISIT, CURRENTLY SHUT ON WEDNESDAYS, OTHER WEEKDAYS OPEN FROM 3PM, AND WEEKENDS FROM 12 NOON.

IanAcceptable12 Aug 2006 Copper/gold with thin white head. Odd beer. After drinking Thomas Hardy Ale in The Rake it was difficult to get my taste buds working again. Some peach/apricot fruit. Good hop finish, peach carries on to the end. Bit earthy. Hop is good on finish
