This was my third venue visit of this outing. My fourth visit to this pub and since the most recent last week. CAMRA's WhatPub shows it now does the local Gadds' brew rather than Sharp's Doom Bar and which I have not seen on all four visits. CAMRA has kindly updated their entry thanks to my raising of this. Used the completely independent front entrance door to the public bar. It was pretty full for our mid-afternoon visit and so the saloon which I did not try is perhaps still closed as it was last week for redecorating. A few dining this time at one table but otherwise it has the appearance of being just a wet pub as no clearly defined dining area. Prompt and friendly service, as on my earlier visits, from the couple running it and ably assisted by their son. A first visit for the two fellow real ale enthusiasts with me on this trip.

Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Friar's Ale4.30GoodVery good head and lacing and lasting and so perhaps not from the same barrel as the week before. A fruity bitter first hit on this Kentish Session IPA, brewed south-west of Canterbury. A bitterness climbing up on the mouthfeel and a hoppy fruit-infusion joining in. A dry hoppiness from its Kent hops, Jester & East Kent Goldings, pervading in the finale.

Only my third visit since last year and coming across it care of CAMRA's WhatPub. It still shows it only does Sharp's Doom Bar and St Austell Proper Job. Neither have been on, on my two earlier visits last summer and not again today but two local brews instead which I was delighted about. Very old-fashioned in appearance in a charming old street of flint cottages and displays a hand-painted "Tomson & Wotton Limited" on its exterior side below its name, The White Swan. The brewery name referred to was founded in 1634 and was then acquired by Thomas Tomson in 1680 according to Brewing History.com which adds that in 1854 Thomas Wotton started as an operative brewer and became a partner in 1867. It merged with Gardner & Co. Ltd. in 1951 to form Combined Breweries (Holdings) Ltd, which was then acquired by Whitbread & Co. Ltd in June 1968 and was closed that same year. Great to see that bit of brewing history immortalised on its side. A very impressive collection of Toby jugs on the inside and it has two completely independent front entrance doors to its two separate bars, saloon and public. It gives you the appearance of being just a wet pub because of its small size, but they also do you some home-cooked grub but I have still to try it. Prompt and friendly service from the couple as always running it and ably assisted by their son. They have been there some 5 years by all accounts and from SE London. One of the their customers on my early afternoon visit this time around was still attired as one of the Dickensian characters and from the annual Dickens' festival in the centre of Broadstairs.

Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Seasider4.30ExcellentPresented with very good head and lacing was this Ramsgate-brewed amber ale and it lasted throughout. A dry hoppy first hit. A moreishly dry fruit-infused mouthfeel ably assisted by its dry hoppiness rising up and lingering. Superb in every way!
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Friar's Ale4.30GoodGood head and lacing and lasting on this Kentish Session IPA, brewed south-west of Canterbury. A fruity hoppiness rising up and delighting the taste buds. A moreishly dry hoppy note or two tap dancing on my tongue and lingering, aided by its Kent hops, Jester & East Kent Goldings.

Only one in the public bar for early afternoon visit but others in the separate saloon. Warm friendly welcome received for my 2nd visit ever to this old-fashioned pub full of toby jugs on shelf above the bar.

Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Seasider4.30ExcellentVery refreshing with a good head and lacing and after my walk from The Magnet. A fruity mouthfeel with a dry, moreish and lingering aftertaste in this Gadds' Amber Ale.

No doubt that this one was the highlight of my day's visits. A fine old pub and now independently owned and run, I was told by the local family also serving. 2 totally separate bars, public and saloon, and only accessed by going outside the front, and also a very cheery rear garden. For the first time all day so far the sun came out to shine on this lovely visit. The old 1966 price list was still up in this former Tomson and Wotton pub when a bitter was one shilling and nine pence here or two shillings and a penny for the best bitter. Two real ales on today and slightly more in price than they would have been nearly 60 years ago! A group of others in as well while I then toured around the saloon to have a look. Homemade burgers and sour dough toasties on but will save myself until follow-up visits for trying these.

Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - HPA Hoppy Pale Ale3.60GoodVery fresh tasting with frothy head. Low in sweetness which I like, was this fine pale made from East Kent malt and Goldings hops.

Was in the area so decided to do a couple of new pubs for me, late afternoon visit not long after 5pm opening and fairly busy already. Despite pondering the many reports on here we decided to sit outside in the private garden area which is only accessible via the road and an anonymous gate, drinks being replenished via a serving hatch from the rear of the pub.
