Beer festival time again and the Friday evening session is a busy one here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Acorn - White Oak4.80ExcellentA pale and slightly hazy beer. Pronounced hop flavours from Crystal hops. Tastes and looks like there might be some wheat in the recipe.
Saffron - Saffron Blonde4.30GoodEasy-drinking, pale, crisp beer.
Red Fox - Black Fox Porter4.80GoodDecent, near-black porter with chocolaty tastes.
Black Hole - BHB3.80AcceptableMarked here as ‘Bitter 4.1%’, but I think it was the regular BHB. Golden in colour, with dry-ish hops.

First day of beer festival that runs through to Sunday. Not particularly busy. By the time I arrived, my friends had been here ages and some were ready to move on – so just a short visit for me.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Tap East - 3 Shades of Black - Original6.40ExcellentRich-tasting black porter, without the sourness evident in some versions of this beer.
Crate - Stout5.70GoodDark brown, fruity stout with plenty of coffee and chocolate tastes and a little roast malt. Let down a bit here by flat condition.
London Brewing Co. - Skyline5.00GoodGolden coloured and bursting with US hops – no doubt would have been even better if not in such flat condition from the stillage.

26 Apr 2012 (Stephen Harris)
First night of the ‘Grit and Steel’ beer festival, featuring breweries in the Derbyshire and Sheffield areas. Two-thirds of the beer list available; a combination of handpumps and stillage.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Ashover - Hydro4.30ExcellentA golden-coloured beer with a fruity, slightly sweet, hoppiness, leading to a dry finish.
Silver Brewhouse (formerly Raw) - Majic Mild3.20ExcellentDark, roasted barley, choccy malt, bitter finish, hint of hop.
Barlow - Sundance IPA6.50ExcellentA strong, hoppy, IPA.
Bradfield - Farmers Plum Bitter4.40GoodVery fruity, plumy, dry-ish.
Townes - Pynot Porter4.50GoodDark brown/red porter. Coffee, roast malt, bitter.
Silver Brewhouse (formerly Raw) - Anubis Porter5.20Acceptable(Correct spelling is ‘Anubis’) A dark, porter-style beer. Bitter coffee. A bit thin for the strength.
Wood Street - Golden Larch4.50PoorWoodstreet is the newly-launched brewery at the Hillsborough Hotel, Sheffield. Unfortunately this beer had a heavy TCP-type taste, obscuring what promised to be a hoppy, amber bitter.
