Beer quality seems to an issue here. Again, we were disappointed. The two Ossett beers tasted the same and all three had strong hints of cardboard. Didn't note the names of the others two miscreants.
Ossett - Jester | 4.00 | | A golden ale. Now what's the opposite of fresh? |
09 Aug 2014 (McGargle)
Much better selection including a Wainstones which I don't remember. Rat White Rat had just finished, drat it!
Ossett - Silver King | 4.30 | | JUst the job on a sunny summer's evening. Good malt body and plenty of quenching hops. |
Mordue - Five Bridge Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
08 Aug 2014 (McGargle)
Back to (ab)normal. Friday evening and only one beer on - typically one that I had no interest in trying.
Mordue - Five Bridge Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
30 Nov 2013 (McGargle)
Good to see a better choice of ales. Tasters encouraged.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur | 5.90 | | Thin, sweet, slightly floral. Disappointing. |
S43 (formerly Sonnet 43) - American Pale Ale | 5.40 | | Drank weaker than its abv. Lightly hopped and inoffensive malts. |
Cotleigh - Barn Owl Bitter | 4.50 | Not Tried
11 Jul 2013 (McGargle)
Sad to report that The Star continues to disappoint. Today there was only one ale on which was off (if you seen what I mean).
Wainstones - Blonde | 4.00 | | Apparently a cask lager this was rather thin and on the turn. Pleased I asked for a taster. |
02 Mar 2013 (McGargle)
Mid-evening and just starting to liven up. Disappointed with the beer quality in what is usually a reliable outlet.
Timothy Taylor - Boltmaker (formerly Best Bitter) | 4.00 | | An old favourite which seemed off form. Disjointed and muted. |
Jarrow - Rivet Catcher | 4.00 | | See Boltmaker comments. |
Wainstones - Iron Stone | 4.20 | | Was warned by another customer that this was thin and weedy. So it was. |
29 Sep 2012 (McGargle)
Disappointing to see they only has two ales on.
Captain Cook - Slipway | 4.20 | | More malt, less hops than I remember. |
Yard of Ale - Flamebearer | 4.50 | Not Tried
25 Aug 2012 (McGargle)
Apparently they'd been busy at lunch time and hadn't bothered changing the casks so Saturday evening came and no real ales were available.

Again really busy. Bar crowded and standing room only. Good atmosphere though.
North Yorkshire - Crystal Tips | 4.00 | | Ruby bitter with a sour sharpness in the mouth. Thick creamy head. Decent. |
Bridgehouse - Tyke | 4.10 | | Light malty brown bitter. Easy drinkable. |
Greene King - Morland Old Speckled Hen | 4.50 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried

Quiet on Saturday at 6pm. The calm before the storm! A pet hate of mine were Englands Pride and Celtic Golds pumpclips which gave no indication of their brewery.
North Yorkshire - Boro Best | 4.00 | | Golden brown beer. Malt was only distinguishing feature. Bit sour and drying on the finish. Lively enough with thick creamy head but just a bit lacklustre. |
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
Caledonian - 80/- | 4.10 | Not Tried
Copper Dragon - Golden Pippin | 3.90 | Not Tried
