4th stop of the outing: It is found inside of the old part of St Pancras Station which was saved from demolition in the 1960s by the pub's namesake. The station gained Grade-I Listed Building status just days before wrecking balls were due on the scene and in a campaign led by poet, Sir John Betjeman, and The Victorian Society. From the early 2000s Eurostar came to St Pancras Station. Run by Geronimo Inns, a part of the Young's Brewery Group, it overlooks the Eurostar platforms and has an imposing Betjeman statue just outside and commemorating the poet's crucial role in saving the station's old building. Friendly, attentive service with three real ales presented on this, my first ever visit. Not overly busy for our mid-afternoon arrival and to find a nearby table close to the bar counter and completely separate from the extensive dining rooms. Appealingly, the bar's walls are adorned with prints of old railway-poster artwork.
| Small Beer - Session Pale | 2.50 | | Good head and lacing and lasting throughout on this slightly hazy brew from Verney Road, London SE16, and between the Old Kent Road and South Bermondsey and not far from Millwall FC. A citrusy first hit. A gentle hoppiness rising to do battle with its tropical fruit flavours such as mango and even a hint of berries. A mix of Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe and Ahtanum hops, the latter one new to me and said to be adding extra citrus. Its vibrant flavours certainly aiding it to punch above its weight for 2.5%. Overly fruited for me but in good order it was. |
