18:00 visit. A real treat to finally visit the one pub that has eluded me on all my previous City visits. Not a disappointment either, very, very good and more so today with a beer festival in progress, with several ales (not noted) on the bar and plenty more down the garden on a stillage. Alas, a swift visit with only two sampled plus an oddity, a whisky called Adnams Spirit of Broadside? Very nice too.

Castle Rock - Preservation Fine Ale4.40ExcellentTop class.
Westerham - Bohemian Rhapsody4.00ExcellentVgc today.

Jane, Isabel came for the beer festival. The pub was very quiet but the garden (where the beer festival was) was very busy, especially with Morris Men. The landlady was very friendly and pointed out some games Isabel could play. Good beer festival and really nice pub.

As always a wonderful evening. Andy had a special "Winter Warmer" selection of beers on which were all in excellent condition. Thornbridge Jaipur IPA, DarkStar Winter Meltdown, Greene King Abbot Reserve, Gadds Dark Conspiracy. The pub was fairly packed early on (7PM) but thinned out a bit by 9PM A local church choir attended to sing carols around the piano and most of the pub joined in. Beer Highlight for me was Dark Conspiracy - fabulous :0) This continues to be right up there in the top 3 pubs in Canterbury for atmosphere, ale and authenticity. Katrina, the proprietor has got it absolutely right, continuing and even improving on the recipe which made the pub so successful during the tenure of Kurt and Margaret Temel, who ran the pub for over 25 years. Long may it continue :0)

Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Dark Conspiracy4.90ExceptionalThis is just fabulous
Dark Star - Winter Meltdown5.00ExcellentI really like this as it has a hint, but just a hint of seasonal spices. In cracking condition and i would have had more, but for the presence of Gadds Dark C...
Greene King - Abbot Reserve6.50ExcellentVery belgian in style and needed to be a bit cooler but in very good condtion
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur5.90Not TriedI love this "proper" IPA but it's too drinkable for it's strength and I therefore avoid it incase I get "Jaipur'ed" again... Well worth trying if you have sturdy legs!
