As always a wonderful evening. Andy had a special "Winter Warmer" selection of beers on which were all in excellent condition. Thornbridge Jaipur IPA, DarkStar Winter Meltdown, Greene King Abbot Reserve, Gadds Dark Conspiracy. The pub was fairly packed early on (7PM) but thinned out a bit by 9PM A local church choir attended to sing carols around the piano and most of the pub joined in. Beer Highlight for me was Dark Conspiracy - fabulous :0) This continues to be right up there in the top 3 pubs in Canterbury for atmosphere, ale and authenticity. Katrina, the proprietor has got it absolutely right, continuing and even improving on the recipe which made the pub so successful during the tenure of Kurt and Margaret Temel, who ran the pub for over 25 years. Long may it continue :0)

Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Dark Conspiracy4.90ExceptionalThis is just fabulous
Dark Star - Winter Meltdown5.00ExcellentI really like this as it has a hint, but just a hint of seasonal spices. In cracking condition and i would have had more, but for the presence of Gadds Dark C...
Greene King - Abbot Reserve6.50ExcellentVery belgian in style and needed to be a bit cooler but in very good condtion
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur5.90Not TriedI love this "proper" IPA but it's too drinkable for it's strength and I therefore avoid it incase I get "Jaipur'ed" again... Well worth trying if you have sturdy legs!

Really friendly atmosphere on a Sunday lunch. Obviously most of the customers knew each other, but it was still nice.

Friendly and relaxing. Nicely done out interior. Only 2 other's in enjoying the warm breeze wafting in the open door.

Woodforde's - Wherry3.80GoodWhenever I see Wherry I have to have it. It's a long time since I've seen it on, years in fact, so my recollection of it's flavours is a bit hazy. Also I know the brewery moved. Anyway, it was good but not a wowing as my mind's rose tinted glasses thought it should be.

5 beers on, all in tip top condition. The manager has got the art of cellarman down to a tee. Biddendens cider also in exceptional condition, so a local cider drinker told me!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter4.00ExceptionalExcellent - right temperature, clear as a bell and very fruity.
Timothy Taylor - Landlord4.30ExceptionalA regular beer in this pub and always served in the best of condition.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur5.90ExceptionalA labour of love by the Manager - set a challenge to buy this beer in - found it, arranged it and that takes some doing as this beer does not normally travel down South. Strong for an IPA in the modern era, but VERY drinkable.

Timothy Taylor - Landlord4.30ExceptionalThis one comes on quite often and it travels well! Great taste, perfect temperature and ready to drink.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 35.00ExceptionalToo strong for an old man like me, but still tasted great. Slept well afterwards!
Woodforde's - Wherry3.80ExceptionalA real favourite, rare in this neck of the woods and well worth a visit to try it. Fresh, clear and spot on. Will it last until the BEER FESTIVAL? Probably not but with about 20 others to come on over this weekend, I wont care!!! (the list is now available, I noticed)

I am sure that this pub is not related to the Phoenix. Different and totally independent landlady who is ALWAYS very welcoming, (not saying that the Phoenix is not also welcoming!)

Great atmopsphere, full of musicians after a concert. Buzzing! Beer first class again. Black Sheep, Rudgate Ruby mild, GK IPA, Dark Star Festival, Harveys Best, TT Landlord and draught Biddendens Medium cider. Even better news is there is a beer festival for the Bank Holiday weekend starting Thursday 26 May. About 20 beers from all over. Should be great - is it on the "festival" link here? Dont know how to do it!

2nd stop on our crawl around Canterbury. Only a few locals in as well as the friendly pub-cat. Apparently now owned by the same guys that run The Phoenix.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Thwaites - Wainwright (please now use the Banks's entry)4.10AcceptableNot bad, a little dull and lifeless. I blame that on the brewer rather than the pub.

Quiet start then a group arrived to fill the place up a bit.

Adnams - Extra4.30GoodNot seen this beer for years so had to reacquaint myself with it. Pretty much as I remember with a sharpish fruity flavour and a malty finish. My score 15/20.

I really like this pub these days. Great beer line up, friendly barman who almost insisted that I try the Old Peculier before buying my pint, pub cat, eclectic group of customers discussing photons and the like. Good stuff.
