Quite a few in for a Saturday afternoon
1648 - Ginger No. 1 | 4.20 | | I liked this - it had a smoky edge and the ginger tang wasn't too overpowering for me. I'd definitely try this again. |
Hopdaemon - Leviathan | 6.00 | | I also had this the day before when it seemed better. This was still good with strong citrus flavour. |
Wolf - Bitter | 3.90 | | |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried
Triple fff - Pressed Rat & Warthog | 3.80 | Not Tried

Saturday afternoon session with Andrew, Brian and Jane. Friendly welcome as per usual in this wonderful pub in the tiny hamlet of Barfrestone. 5 good beers on with a variation of styles. I can happily sit here for 3 and a half hours, trying the beer simply enjoying myself.
Wolf - Bitter | 3.90 | | Chestnut colour with lasting beige head. Beautiful nettle/herb hop aroma with grapefruit. Fullish in mouth with malt underpinning the elegant hops and citrus fruit. Slightly woody too. Excellent session beer. Good hoppy finish with more nettle hops. |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | Typical Hopdaemon fruity and hop nose. Sweetish caramel in mouth with caramel hop finish. Yep, nice |
Hopdaemon - Leviathan | 6.00 | | Deep brown/ruby colour with lasting beige head. Not as syrupy as when I had it in Blakes. Some good deep dark fruits and dry malt. |
Triple fff - Pressed Rat & Warthog | 3.80 | | Dark brown with bubbly beige head. Good mild aroma, not too hoppy with good choc malt. Fine. |
1648 - Ginger No. 1 | 4.20 | | Brown/chestnut colour. Ginger aroma with hops. Bit of lemon, ok in mouth, dry finish with more ginger nut biscuit type flavour. Fine, if a little too gingery |

Early afternoon quick session with Ian, Jane and Brian. Busy with a good variety of people.
Hopdaemon - Leviathan | 6.00 | | Smooth and herby with deep rich medicine flavours. Quick bitter finish followed by a glowing face. Can't beleive this is 6%! |
Wolf - Bitter | 3.90 | | Rich caramel with a sharp bitterness. Mild burnt caramel on finish. A very drinkable pint. |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried
Triple fff - Pressed Rat & Warthog | 3.80 | Not Tried
1648 - Ginger No. 1 | 4.20 | Not Tried

Arived about 6pm and there were only 2 other people in. The beer battered cod was great as usual. Charlie said he might be getting some Goacher's Mild and Hopdaemon Golden Braid in soon.
Hopdaemon - Dominator | 5.10 | | Sharp lemon and tangerine with a warm strawberry background flavour. Sharp bitter finish. I had this last week at the Dover beer festival and gave that a 5/5. This was better! |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | Good drinking! Rich strawberry and subtle lychee with a long rounded bitter finish |
Triple fff - Pressed Rat & Warthog | 3.80 | | Dark mild with a foamy head. Initial rich sour bitter flavour followed by very toasted malt and a very astringent bitter finish |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 3 | 5.00 | Not Tried
1648 - Ginger No. 1 | 4.20 | Not Tried

Only a few in on a late afternoon visit after work
Hopdaemon - Dominator | 5.10 | | I missed this at the Dover beer fest last week, so I was pleased to see it here. Dark brown in colour, slowly disappearing foamy head, grapefruit and tangerine peel bite. Utterly fantastic. |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 3 | 5.00 | Not Tried
1648 - Ginger No. 1 | 4.20 | Not Tried

Dropped in after work. It was snowing, but the fire was roaring.
1648 - Signature | 4.40 | | Almost looks like a lager. Fresh, juicy hoppy bite. Good stuff |
Cottage - Gone with the whippet | 4.20 | | Brown in colour, thin disappearing head, lots of toffee caramel in the taste.OK |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried
Elgood's - Black Dog Mild | 3.60 | Not Tried

Another excellent night out at the Yew Tree Inn. The regulars were having fun writing comments on the chalk board that runs around the top of the bar all to the accomplyment of Charlie's varied music collection.
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | What a great pint this is. It had the aroma of fresh cut mint with a mellow taste of apricot and mandarin finished by a soft feeling but bitter twang. Great stuff. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 3 | 5.00 | | Gadds are surprising me recently. I thought I didn't like them but all of their beers I've recently had have been great. This pint was a pale golden colour with no head at all. The aroma was of sweet hay. The taste was astringent with overtones of hay and grass. The finish was good and bitter. Another great pint. |
Moorhouse's - Black Cat Mild | 3.40 | | Could have happily drunk this all night if I'd been up for a session. It was quite bitter with a far more agressive burnt flavour than I usually get from Black Cat. The finish was a short lived milkyness. |
1648 - Ginger No. 1 | 4.20 | | Now there was absolutely nothing wrong with this beer but you would have to like ginger to drink more than a pint. The beer was a redish golden colour with a thin head. The whole of the taste from start to finish was an agressive bitterness mixed with a deep ginger bite. |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - ESB | 5.50 | Not Tried

We arived late afternoon and found the pub to be fairly busy. We got a warm welcome as always from Charlie and sat in the no-smoking side room. Had a great time and a very good Beer Battered Cod and a fantastic beer line-up.
Moorhouse's - Black Cat Mild | 3.40 | | A silver cream head on a black body. There was a strong burnt peanut taste to this and my guess that it was top of the barrel. Give it a day or 2 and it'll be absolutely stunning. |
Robinsons - Old Tom | 8.50 | | Wow, this will take your breath away. Black beer with no real head. The high alcohol content and taste was very well balanced by an astringent rough tanin burnt bitterness that I'd associate with crude oil crossed with a red Bordeaux wine. |
Grand Union - Honey Porter | 4.90 | | A slim head on a black body. It had a sweet burnt malt taste with rich deep honey bitter finish. The background flavours reminded me of Rother Valley beers in that they it was quite earthy or peaty. |
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA | 4.50 | | Rich lychee and subtle strawberry flavours made this well balanced beer a treat. The finish was good and bitter. |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - ESB | 5.50 | | A rich strawberry taste quickly followed by a very sharp bitterness and a honey malt flavour. The finish was very bitter. |

After a frantic day at work, the Yew Tree is the perfect bolt hole
Arundel - Sussex Mild | 3.70 | | Superb mild. Full roasted flavour with chocolate finish. |
Cottage - Norman's Conquest Xmas | 4.50 | | Badged as Norman's Conquest which is 7%, I think this must be the weaker Xmas version - still very nice though |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - DogBolter Dark Porter | 5.60 | | I'm really not a Gadds fan. Astringent with only slight hop flavour. |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - ESB | 5.50 | Not Tried
10 Dec 2005 (Andrew)
Late afternoon session in this atmospheric and friendly pub. It was fairly busy in the main bar and the cod and chips was a good as it usually is.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 7 | 3.80 | | Astringently hoppy pale yellow brew. For a weak session bitter this was very appropriate for the time of year |
Arundel - Sussex Mild | 3.70 | | Milky burnt coffee with very low hopping. Loverly |
Cottage - Southern Bitter | 3.70 | | Elderflower hops with a citrus fruit bite. Probably better suited to the summer than a cold December afternoon |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried
