Arrived just before afternoon closing time to search out possible food menu for a future occasion. There were about 5 others at tables in the bar area so it was fairly quiet.

My sister and I took our mother out for Sunday lunch. I got here a bit early and sat and read a book whilst being shocked at the good quality of the Late Red. Food is good and they did a cheese board for me for dessert that wasn't on the menu.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Late Red4.50ExcellentThe last two years, I have not been particularly impressed with this which is a shame as the Shep seasonals are always pretty reliable. This year though it was back to top form. That kind of Turkish Delight fruit flavour, the condition, the depth of flavours, the slight hoppiness on the end. All excellent. I can't remember the last time I so actively enjoyed a Sheps beer.

Here for lunch with Mother and sister. Lovely pub now. Very enjoyable.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter3.70AcceptableFine, good condition, sunk down, but I had a cold, so couldn't really taste anything.

Not very busy, but it had just opened. The porter was excellent.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Porter4.80ExcellentVery, very good. Nice mix of dark fruit and roasted flavours.

Got there about 5.30pm on Christmas Eve and it was fairly empty not too surprisingly given the time. Anyway, this is a pleasant pub to start a Christmas eve crawl in. Here with Ian and Martin
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Porter4.80GoodGood condition on this beer. Blackcurrent with sharp bitter hop finish. Very nice.

Good crowd of people in but we still got a table. Jane joined me and Andrew.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale)4.20GoodI really enjoyed this. Bit of a surprise, but it was very easy drinking.
Shepherd Neame - Early Bird4.30AcceptableNot enough hops especially on the finish.

Reassuringly expensive pints can be purchased here. I think the Early Bird was £3. Anyway, the pub has an attractive interior and is a pleasant drinking venue.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale)4.20AcceptableAgain, like the Early Bird, the hops seemed to have been squashed out of this. Perfectly drinkable though, just not that interesting.
Shepherd Neame - Early Bird4.30AcceptableNot sure if Shep's are having ingredient problems but the hops in this were as mottled as those in the Master Brew I'd just had in the Kings Head. I've certainly had much better pints of this in the past.
24 Dec 2006 (Andrew)
Arive about 9pm and it was very quite compared to this time last year. Got a seat!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale)4.20AcceptableTasted of caramel sea water. Not the best I've ever had of this.
Shepherd Neame - Porter4.80AcceptableI know people who think this beer is very good. I must be missing something as to me it's just a black, slightly liquorish 1 dimensional beer.
22 Jul 2006 (Andrew)
Last pub in our Wye tour. Sat in the rear garden by a mock house and drank brown beer. Ian had Hurliman's Lager for old times sake

Came here on Sunday lunchtime for my Mother's birthday along with my sister. I like it. It has reasonably good food and the beer is kept pretty well too. I had lamb shank and black cherry pavlova along with 2 pints of Shepherd Neame Porter
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Porter4.80ExcellentBlack beer, sparse bubbly beige head. Slightly sour, dark roast malts with some dark fruit on the aroma. Molasses in fact. Slightly wet in mouth and some sourness. Finish has dry grainy burnt malts, with some very good dry hop. Little bit of toffee. I really like this beer.
