I’m pleased to see that six of the cask beers survive from the weekend festival - a festival that seems to have been judged an outstanding success. A steady flow of customers here on a Monday mid-evening.
Tap East - Open Brewhouse - Simply Mosaic (in collaboration with Simply Hops) | 4.50 | | Lovely. Golden, hazy, hoppy brew. |
Tap East - Open Brewhouse - Beer Called Framboise (in collaboration with Howling Hops) | 5.50 | | Brewed in collaboration with Howling Hops. This is cloudy, orange-coloured, fruity (although it doesn’t really scream raspberry) and a little sour. Very smooth. |
Tap East - Saison | 5.00 | Not Tried
Tap East - Open Brewhouse - Lone Ranger | 6.00 | Not Tried
Tap East - Open Brewhouse - Stout Ladies (in collaboration with The Tap East Girls) | 5.00 | Not Tried

28 Jun 2013 (Stephen Harris)
A highly acclaimed first beer festival for this brew-pub, which was very busy on Friday night. Many of the festival beers have been collaboratively brewed here at Tap East in alongside visiting brewers and other industry people. Eighteen cask beers and nine kegs were available, almost all specially brewed for the festival. I list only those I drank and, as ever, they are cask-conditioned unless specified – halves all the way tonight given the diversity on offer.
Tap East - Open Brewhouse - Simply Mosaic (in collaboration with Simply Hops) | 4.50 | | Pale golden in colour, strong Mosaic hop flavour. Brewed with the help of Simply Hops. |
Tap East - Open Brewhouse - Lone Ranger | 6.00 | | Luscious Black IPA. |
Tap East - Open Brewhouse - Stout Ladies (in collaboration with The Tap East Girls) | 5.00 | | Tasty, dry, black stout. Brewed by the Tap East barmaids. |
Tap East - Porter | 4.60 | | Richly malty, dark beer, brewed with the help of malt suppliers Muntons. |
De Molen - Dark IPA Simcoe | 7.80 | | On keg dispense. Another ravishing Black IPA, with an abundance of Simcoe hops plus more than a hint of roasted barley. |
Partizan - Coffee Black IPA | 6.20 | | On keg dispense. Wonderfully complex, strong, hoppy beer with a dry, roasted coffee flavour. |
Mikkeller - Texas Ranger | 6.60 | | On keg dispense. Last time I drank this beer I thought it was one of the best I’ve ever tasted. That thought is tempered slightly today by a slight excess of carbonation. But it is still a fabulous blend of bitter chocolate and fierce chipotle chilli flavours in a dark beer. |
Tap East - Saison | 5.00 | | A quite sour, cloudy beer that has rye in the grist. Complex and a bit challenging. Brewed with the help of Redemption Brewery. |
Tap East - Open Brewhouse - Higgs Boson (in collaboration with Fuller's) | 2.50 | | Low strength, hoppy beer. Brewed with the help of Fullers Brewery and based upon the recipe for Fullers Mighty Atom. |
Robson's (Shongweni, Durban) - Durban Pale Ale | 4.40 | | First time ever in cask for this Durban, South Africa brewery – the bottled version being available regularly at Utobeer. Unfortunately it has not survived the process, or perhaps the journey, very well. Should be better than this I think. |

15 Jun 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Nearing home after a long day out. But familiar faces in here distract and detain me for a while in the late evening.
Tap East - IPA CSCC | 5.80 | | If I heard correctly, CSCC stands for Centennial, Sorachi Ace, Cascade and Columbus. Hardly surprising then that this beer has a big and complex hop charcter. |
Tap East - Poplar Pale Ale | 4.00 | | Pale gold in colour. |
Oakham - Midnight Mild | 4.00 | Not Tried
Tap East - Tonic Ale | 3.00 | Not Tried

06 Jun 2013 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening. Day slowly winding to a close.
Oakham - Citra | 4.20 | | Much better than the one I had at Oakham Brewery Tap, Peterborough earlier this week - this was moreish and not an effort |
Tap East - Tonic Ale | 3.00 | | First rate. Amazing flavours from a low gravity job |
Tap East - Ostend Mild | 6.00 | | Made with some Rochefort yeast giving the beer some Trappist qualities |
Rooster's - Cream | 4.70 | Not Tried
Tap East - JWB (Jim Wilson Bitter) | 3.80 | Not Tried
Oakham - The Hare and the Hedgehog | 3.90 | Not Tried
24 May 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Friday. Mid to late evening session.
Tap East - Double IPA | 8.70 | | Amber-coloured and a bit hazy. Obviously a very strong beer. Good hop flavours. A bit sticky. Warming and lovely. |
Baird Beer - Suruga Bay Imperial IPA | 7.00 | | Japanese beer on keg dispense. Just a third as it was frighteningly expensive. Amber-coloured and hazy. Very fruity, Pacific hop flavours. Obviously strong in alcohol. Low carbonation. |
Tap East - Ostend Mild | 6.00 | | Strong mild brewed with Belgian yeast. A slightly odd mix I thought, the spiciness from the yeast pushing this beer more in to Dubbel territory. |
Rooster's - Outlaw Low Life | 2.80 | | Copper coloured. A complete contrast to the strong Tap East beers. A nice, crisp, hoppy taste. But very obviously low-strength. |
Otley - O-Garden | 4.80 | Not Tried
Tap East - Tonic Ale | 3.00 | Not Tried
Harbour - Pale | 6.00 | Not Tried
