06 Jun 2013 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening. Day slowly winding to a close.
| Oakham - Citra | 4.20 | | Much better than the one I had at Oakham Brewery Tap, Peterborough earlier this week - this was moreish and not an effort |
| Tap East - Tonic Ale | 3.00 | | First rate. Amazing flavours from a low gravity job |
| Tap East - Ostend Mild | 6.00 | | Made with some Rochefort yeast giving the beer some Trappist qualities |
| Rooster's - Cream | 4.70 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - JWB (Jim Wilson Bitter) | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
| Oakham - The Hare and the Hedgehog | 3.90 | Not Tried | |
24 May 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Friday. Mid to late evening session.
| Tap East - Double IPA | 8.70 | | Amber-coloured and a bit hazy. Obviously a very strong beer. Good hop flavours. A bit sticky. Warming and lovely. |
| Baird Beer - Suruga Bay Imperial IPA | 7.00 | | Japanese beer on keg dispense. Just a third as it was frighteningly expensive. Amber-coloured and hazy. Very fruity, Pacific hop flavours. Obviously strong in alcohol. Low carbonation. |
| Tap East - Ostend Mild | 6.00 | | Strong mild brewed with Belgian yeast. A slightly odd mix I thought, the spiciness from the yeast pushing this beer more in to Dubbel territory. |
| Rooster's - Outlaw Low Life | 2.80 | | Copper coloured. A complete contrast to the strong Tap East beers. A nice, crisp, hoppy taste. But very obviously low-strength. |
| Otley - O-Garden | 4.80 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - Tonic Ale | 3.00 | Not Tried | |
| Harbour - Pale | 6.00 | Not Tried | |
17 May 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Mid-evening on a Friday and the bar is quite busy.
| Mallinsons - Amarillo | 4.20 | | Mallinson’s certainly know their hopd and Amarillo is one of my favourites, so, inevitably, I really liked the pale single-hop brew. |
| Oakham - Duke Nukem | 9.00 | | Strong and rather sweet. |
| Oakham - Citra | 4.20 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - East End Mild | 3.50 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - A.P.A. (American Pale Ale) | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
07 May 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening visit on my way to a meeting in Leyton.
| Hardknott - Infra red | 6.20 | | Full-on red IPA. No real sweetness, fruity malt, good hops. |
| Shamblemoose - #4 American Brown Ale | 5.30 | | Dark brown, hoppy excellence. |
| Tap East - East End Mild | 3.50 | Not Tried | |
| Pig & Porter - Red Spider Rye (superseded by 4.8% version) | 5.50 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - IPA (Calypso) | 5.60 | Not Tried | |
| Oakham - Duke Nukem | 9.00 | Not Tried | |
02 May 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Post-shopping visit in the mid-evening.
| Tap East - IPA (Calypso) | 5.60 | | Amber/gold in colour. Predominately fruity taste (where I have found Calypso hops to be bittersweet in the past). |
| Redemption - Rock the Kazbek | 4.00 | | Not at its best, a bit hazy and the hop flavours subdued. |
| Dark Star - Carafa Jade | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - East End Mild | 3.50 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - Tap Dance | 5.30 | Not Tried | They are still saying that this is the last cask. |
26 Apr 2013 (Stephen Harris)
It is a friend’s birthday and a group of 6 or 7 of us are embarking on a little brew-pub tour, starting here in the early evening. A new Oakham beer was also available, but I neglected to write down its name.
| Tap East - Tap Dance | 5.30 | | The last cask of this yummy, chilli beer. |
| Dark Star - Espresso Stout | 4.20 | Not Tried | |
| Harviestoun - American IPA | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - East End Mild | 3.50 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - Tonic Ale | 3.00 | Not Tried | |
23 Apr 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Rather quiet in the mid-evening – although plenty popping in briefly to check the score in the Bayern v Barca game on TV.
| Hardknott - Azimuth | 5.80 | | Strong, golden IPA with intense tropical fruit flavours. |
| Tap East - The Saint | 4.00 | | Special beer brewed for St George’s Day. |
| Dark Star - Espresso Stout | 4.20 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - Nebula Galaxy IPA | 7.40 | Not Tried | A friend drank a bottle of this and was very enthusiastic about the quality. |
12 Apr 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Plenty of people are, like me, just having a quick one here in passing.
| Harbour - Porter No.1 | 5.50 | | Very dark and very bitter. Bit of roasted malt, chocolate. |
| Titanic - Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Oakham - Tranquility | 6.50 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - JWB (Jim Wilson Bitter) | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - Tonic Ale | 3.00 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - AKA Red Ale | 4.80 | Not Tried | |
06 Apr 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Just a pit stop really on my way home from Colchester, but, perhaps inevitably, the pub was full of familiar faces making a pit stop on the way home from Colchester, and one pint soon led to two.
| Tap East - AKA Red Ale | 4.80 | | I was assured that even though this was a red ale, it was not too sweet. And indeed, whilst having a malty richness, the sweetness of the style is down-played. Red in colour, Japanese not Irish! |
| Brecon - Six Beacons | 4.10 | | An amber-coloured, session bitter. Malty and easy-drinking. Fairly unchallenging, but a good example of the style I thought. |
| Swannay (formerly Highland) - Dark Munro | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Swannay (formerly Highland) - Pale Ale | 4.70 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - Tonic Ale | 3.00 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - A.P.A. (American Pale Ale) | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
26 Mar 2013 (Stephen Harris)
I watched the England match here with a small crowd. The whole shopping centre seemed relatively quiet tonight.
| Tap East - Tap Dance | 5.30 | | Dark, chilli and chocolate beer. I had to have a few of these just to confirm how good it is. |
| Harbour - Pale | 6.00 | | A full-on, hoppy beer from an impressive brewery. |
| Tap East - Coffee in the Morning (has been 5.7% too) | 5.60 | Not Tried | |
| Tap East - A.P.A. (American Pale Ale) | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
