I slipped out of work early and kidded myself I’d do a spot of shopping at Westfield whilst it was quiet in the mid-afternoon – I’m so naive. The shops were obscenely busy and full of bad-tempered pushers and shovers. So I just sat in here and visited the Indian sweet shop across the passage.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Tap East - Tonic Ale3.00ExcellentVery good and hoppy. Everything yesterday’s pint of Hophead was not.
Otley - Saison Obscura5.50GoodAnother mould-breaking beer. This is a black-coloured Saison. Hop-free, spicy and yeasty.

Return visit for the stronger beers in the early evening. There was a large ice skating rink outside which was still thriving but honestly most people were clinging on to the outside rail for grim death (quite sensibly) - the children were the fearless warriors!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Rooster's - Outlaw Mad Hatter Jasmine Green Tea IPA6.20ExcellentStrong IPA style - now time to go home

Arrived short after noonday. An oasis from the sales frenzy just outside the door to meet up with ChrisE who had arrived earlier by HS1 Boxing Day train.

Lack of tubes has forced all the sales bargain hunters into their cars and Stratford is grid-locked in every direction. This pub provides a welcome respite on the difficult journey home from central London. Had I known HS1 was running, I’d have been tempted to head out of town. Other beers as listed by ChrisE.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brewster's - Andromeda4.80ExcellentClassy, golden, hoppy, mellow bitter.
Tap East - 3 Shades of Black - Barrel-aged7.00ExcellentBy the time I got here (6-ish) a cask of the barrel-aged version of this beer had come on. Woody and vanilla and whisky tastes abound.
Tap East - Merry Old4.00GoodA brown, malty, winter ale.
26 Dec 2012 (ChrisE)
Boxing Day, and trains were running a good service on HS1 so I decided to meet up with Mr Pirrip for a few jars. Last winter this place was absolutely freezing cold and staff were having to wear overcoats, but the heating problems appear to have been sorted out. The Westfield Centre was very busy, but the pub was comfortable, we returned in the evening before I caught the penultimate train back to Ashford.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Rooster's - Franklin4.30Excellent
Tap East - 3 Shades of Black - Original6.40ExcellentThe barmaid said that was 7% ABV. A dark creamy really enjoyable beer.

I’ve been out of the country for a few days to avoid the pre-Christmas madness, but have developed something of a hop deficiency in the process. I stop here for a quick one on the way home from the airport, to replenish, but find my friends Woody and Hanana already here and a quick one rapidly becomes a slow one.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur5.90ExcellentThis satisfies my hop craving in abundance.
Oakham - Citra4.20ExcellentCitra is probably my favourite hop of 2012 (I guess having a hop of the year marks me out as pretty weird). Lovely stuff.
Rooster's - Black Math3.50ExcellentA near-black, bitter stout with plenty of liquorice tastes.

Pleasantly relaxed in here, despite the “shop as if the world ends tomorrow” atmosphere outside.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Tap East - Tonic Ale3.00ExcellentFull-flavoured (as in very hoppy), low strength beer – yellow/gold in colour. This cask dry-hopped with Citra, so quite sharp.
Rooster's - Outlaw Mad Hatter Jasmine Green Tea IPA6.20ExcellentRevival of the ‘Outlaw’ series of beers after five or six years absence. This a very full-flavoured and complex, pale IPA. There are strong flavours of jasmine and of tea. Very moorish. Brewed ‘in collaboration’ with Melissa Cole and with Taylors of Harrogate.

Early doors on a Saturday morning and I'm the first one in.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Tap East - 3 Shades of Black - Original6.40ExcellentExcellent smooth and malty stout with roast coffee and chocolate notes. Hop rate is quite high too. Full bodied mouthfeel. My score 17/20. Confirmed by barman as 6.4%.
Tap East - Kellerman Schwarz Style4.40GoodDarkish red beer with good hop character and bitterness with a hint of citrus. Some smooth maltiness. Maybe not entirely true to intended style but a pleasant beer. My score 15/20.
21 Nov 2012 (Stephen Harris)
Quite busy in the early evening, which was nice to see.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Tap East - IPA CCCP5.30ExceptionalAn exceptionally good, powerful, golden beer. Full of fruity, citrusy hop flavours, but also pretty dry. Fresh on and full of life.
Tap East - 3 Shades of Black – Sour6.40ExcellentThis beer comes in three varieties – ‘sour’, ‘original’ and ‘barrel-aged’. It is a deep ruby-coloured, almost black, London-style porter. Chocolate and roasty tastes and a little tart sourness.
Tap East - Kellerman Schwarz Style4.40GoodDoesn’t taste or look like a Schwarzbier to me, but who am I to say? Brown, malty, a little bit thin. Some hop notes.
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's)3.40Not Tried
Tap East - East End Mild3.50Not Tried

We followed the Ilkley Brewery roadshow down the road to Stratford, where a good crowd had assembled.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Ilkley - Siberia5.90ExcellentI really like this unusual beer. Cloudy and yeasty, citrusy hoppy and heavily flavoured with rhubarb.
Tap East - Urban Hop4.80ExcellentPerhaps a little more mellow than it was a couple of days ago.
Tap East - JWB (Jim Wilson Bitter)3.80Not Tried
