Visits Details
01 Oct 2012 (Stephen Harris)
Mid-evening visit and the pub is very quiet.
Tap East - Urban Hop | 4.80 | | Amber-coloured, ‘Green Hop’ beer, made with hops from Jim the brewer’s garden. Good hoppy character. |
Tap East - London Extra | 5.30 | | Highly competent beer, but I find the big malt character a little harsh. it turns out that the recipe is from the 1820s, not 1920s as I previously thought. |
Oakham - Endless Summer | 3.40 | Not Tried
Hawkshead - Windermere Pale (was 3.5%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Tap East - JWB (Jim Wilson Bitter) | 3.80 | Not Tried
Oakham - Harvest Spirit | 4.30 | Not Tried
25 Sep 2012 (Stephen Harris)
Very quiet in here tonight – the congregation not reaching double figures whilst I was in. The heady days of the Olympics, like the summer, seem long ago.
Tap East - East End Mild | 3.50 | | Very dark, very choco, very good. |
Oakham - Harvest Spirit | 4.30 | | Braggots seem to be all the rage at the moment and I’m getting quite a taste for them. That’s ‘Honey-infused Ales’. This one has a good load of honey on a firm malt base with hops presence also there. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Elgood's - Golden Newt | 4.10 | Not Tried
Oakham - Endless Summer | 3.40 | Not Tried
Tap East - JWB (Jim Wilson Bitter) | 3.80 | Not Tried
14 Sep 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Not too busy late on a Friday afternoon.
Tap East - Poplar Pale Ale | 4.00 | | Excellent hoppy pale ale with a good malt kick to complement the citrus hop bite. Good hoppy finish. My score 16/20. |
03 Sep 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
Keen to see how this venue was coping with the Olympics crowds I was delighted to see hordes of multi-national lanyarded uniformed Gamesters relaxing after a day's exertions. Both Tap East beers were, at £3.30 pp, the very best value in Olympicsland London E20 for sure.
Tap East - JWB (Jim Wilson Bitter) | 3.80 | | First rate fruity bitter |
Tap East - IPA (Bramling Cross) | 5.20 | | A heavy full bodied IPA with a slight American style |
Rooster's - YPA (Yorkshire Pale Ale) | 4.10 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Espresso Stout | 4.20 | Not Tried
Oakham - Citra | 4.20 | Not Tried
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Sequoia | 4.50 | Not Tried
31 Aug 2012 (Stephen Harris)
The Olympic buzz has returned.
Tap East - Moai Pacific Ale | 4.70 | | Intensely hopped pale beer with both bitter and fruity hop character. |
Tap East - London Extra | 5.30 | | An amber-coloured beer based upon a 1920s recipe. Heavily malty and bitter. Good, but not my kind of thing really. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Harviestoun - Schiehallion | 4.80 | Not Tried
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Lord Marples | 4.00 | Not Tried
Tap East - JWB (Jim Wilson Bitter) | 3.80 | Not Tried
22 Aug 2012 (Stephen Harris)
Relative calm in here after a frantic few weeks of trade. Mostly locals, but the first few Paralympians are in evidence.
Harviestoun - Dragonfly | 3.60 | | Amber/gold in colour, with plenty of aroma hops. Light body, fruity hop character, dry and bitter finish. |
Tap East - JWB (Jim Wilson Bitter) | 3.80 | | A bit darker in colour I think than when I drank this before. A good, balanced bitter. |
Dark Star - Espresso Stout | 4.20 | Not Tried
Ilkley - Best | 4.00 | Not Tried
Redemption - Hopspur | 4.50 | Not Tried
31 Jul 2012 (Stephen Harris)
This pub has had a great buzz in recent weeks, and now that the Olympics have finally started it is an absolutely prime spot to compare notes with sports fans, team staff, camera crews etc.. from the world over. There are even a few real live Olympians around (although not actually in the pub itself).
Tap East - Baby-Faced Assassin | 7.00 | | Fierce, US-style IPA. |
Tap East - IPA (Bramling Cross) | 5.20 | | Sharp IPA with a hint of black fruit from the hops. |
Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | Not Tried
Redemption - Hopspur | 4.50 | Not Tried
Redemption - Trinity | 3.00 | Not Tried
Tap East - JWB (Jim Wilson Bitter) | 3.80 | Not Tried
09 Jul 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until close. No Olympics fever hereabouts yet. A good hubbub of conversation.
Tap East - Double Hard Stout | 4.60 | | So good I named it twice |
Tap East - East End Mild | 3.50 | | Full of flavour for a 3.5%er |
Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | Not Tried
Oakham - Citra | 4.20 | Not Tried | Came on to replace the Burscough |
Hop Vine (formerly Burscough) - Priory Gold | 3.80 | Not Tried | Ran out during my stay
|
Summer Wine (SWB) - Rouge-Hop Red Hop Ale | 5.00 | Not Tried
Tiny Rebel - Cwtch | 4.60 | Not Tried
29 Jun 2012 (Stephen Harris)
Crowded inside and outside – probably the busiest I have seen this pub so far. 7:30 pm on a Friday onwards
Liverpool Organic - Best Bitter | 4.20 | | A pale beer with lots of lemony hops. Long bitter hop finish. |
Celt Experience (now brands are owned by Evans Evans) - Native Storm | 4.40 | | A brown bitter with a spicy, yeasty taste – I suspect that it had been shaken up or was barrel-end. Should be better than this I think. |
Lovibonds - Henley Dark | 4.80 | | On keg dispense. I had really enjoyed this toasted dark beer at Cask a while ago. But here it was just cold and very fizzy and largely tasteless. Remind me not to order a keg beer at this pub again. |
Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | Not Tried
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Sequoia | 4.50 | Not Tried
Tap East - Double Hard Stout | 4.60 | Not Tried
Tap East - JWB (Jim Wilson Bitter) | 3.80 | Not Tried
06 Jun 2012 (Stephen Harris)
Bustling with an after-work crowd.
Tap East - Coffee in the Morning (has been 5.7% too) | 5.60 | | The words ‘full-flavoured’ hardly do justice to this black-coloured coffee beer. Bitter, roasted, coffee bean flavours dominate. |
Tap East - East End Mild | 3.50 | | This example a bit past its best. Chocolatey background, but dominated by a bitter taste. |
Buxton - Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Frank as Apollo | 4.60 | Not Tried
Tap East - JWB (Jim Wilson Bitter) | 3.80 | Not Tried
