Early evening and the pub is very busy indeed, at least in part because there is a special feature this weekend of Green Hop beers. I’m stood at the bar with Terry L and Matt B.
Five Points - Green Hop Bullion | 3.70 | | The 2018 edition of this beer is fresh and pungent. The epitome to my mind of what a Green Hop beer should be. |
Canopy - Leap Green Hop Pale Ale | 3.80 | | Cloudy gold. Quite sharp. |
East London (ELB) - Walthamstow Beer - Green Hopped Pale Ale | 4.40 | | A slightly rough beer with spicy Fuggles-type hops. |
Hale Brewing - Belgo-Hop | 6.00 | | From a keg of some kind. An interesting interpretation of the Green Hop theme. Dry and a bit spicy. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Green Hop Ale (2018) | 4.80 | Not Tried
Five Points - Green Hop Goldings | 3.70 | Not Tried
Five Points - Green Hop Fuggles | 3.70 | Not Tried
Pig & Porter - Wibble | 4.70 | Not Tried

Quiet in here after the crowds of last week. I was not the only one to compliment the manager on the very high quality of the cask beer. He said that a separation of keg beers and cask beers into separate temperature-controlled cellars had really paid off in improved quality for both types of beer, and that the cask beers were on particularly fine form.
Five Points - Railway Porter | 4.80 | | A superb pint of chocolatey, black Porter. Is this the best regularly-brewed Porter in London? |
East London (ELB) - Foundation Bitter | 4.20 | Not Tried
Five Points - Five Points Pale | 4.40 | Not Tried
Five Points - XPA | 4.00 | Not Tried
27 Sep 2018 (Stephen Harris)
This pub officially re-opens tonight, although it has been quietly open since last Friday. The Five Points have done a very nice job on smartening the interior and exterior. Every customer tonight gets a free pint and a free slice of pizza, but the place is uncomfortably over-crowded. I’ll come back for a proper look on a quieter evening.
Five Points - XPA | 4.00 | | Not quite as crisp as and maltier than I recall from previous experience. |
East London (ELB) - Foundation Bitter | 4.20 | Not Tried
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - Trans Atlantic Golden Ale (Fuller's & Friends collaboration with The Five Points) | 4.60 | Not Tried | This beer is now believed to be brewed at Fullers. |
03 Aug 2018 (Stephen Harris)
A bit of a coup for the Pembury as they have all four of the Fullers collaboration brews done for the London Craft Beer Festival here tonight in cask. Unfortunately, none of them are really ready for sale and all suffer from a lack of condition – a real shame as I am sure these are all great beers.
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - Steam Effort (Fuller's & Friends collaboration with Redemption) | 4.50 | | A collaboration brew with Fullers. Unfortunately it is in flat condition. The best of the bunch; a Steam Lager. |
Five Points - Trans Atlantic Golden Ale | 4.60 | | A collaboration brew with Fullers. Unfortunately it is in very flat condition. Malty and strong. |
Wiper and True - New English IPA | 6.00 | | A collaboration brew with Fullers. Unfortunately it is in very flat condition. Strong, fruity and slightly sweet. |
Anspach & Hobday - The V ‘n’ O Stout | 5.50 | | A collaboration brew with Fullers. Unfortunately it is in very flat condition. Vanilla and oatmeal. |
Kirkstall - Kirkstall Pale Ale | 4.00 | Not Tried
Kirkstall - Three Swords | 4.50 | Not Tried
Redemption - Big Chief | 5.50 | Not Tried
Five Points - Railway Porter | 4.80 | Not Tried
Five Points - Five Points Pale | 4.40 | Not Tried
Five Points - XPA | 4.00 | Not Tried
20 Jul 2018 (Stephen Harris)
After last month’s Cask Festival, this weekend sees a ‘Keg Party’ – a bit uncool for this website, but I went anyway. It has been announced that the pub will close for refurbishment on 12 August.
Good Chemistry - Solar Impulse | 5.00 | | A golden APA. Very bitter, and fruity too. |
East London (ELB) - Barbed Wit Rhubarb Wheat Beer | 4.60 | | From key-keg and quite a departure for ELB – this is an alcoholic fruit (rhubarb) smoothie. |
Lough Gill - Sloe Gin Gose | 5.20 | | From keggery of some form. Hazy gold in colour. Sour, salty, gin botanicals, fruit. There is a lot to like here. |
Black Iris - Liquid Flamingo | 3.00 | | From key-keg. Alarmingly pink in colour. It is a raspberry-flavoured Berliner Weisse, and rather lovely. |
Donzoko - Session IPA | 4.70 | | From keg. Yellow/gold murk. Fizziness detracts on this one. But there are lush, hoppy flavours. |
Five Points - Railway Porter | 4.80 | Not Tried
Five Points - Five Points Pale | 4.40 | Not Tried
Beatnikz Republic - Spring Pale | 3.60 | Not Tried
23 Jun 2018 (Andrew)
There seemed to be major disruption on the roads so we got off the bus and as we walked to the park we came past the Pembury - so we popped in.

Five Points - Railway Porter | 4.80 | Not Tried

Wild Beer Co. - River of Darkness (collaboration with Left Handed Giant) | 3.90 | Not Tried
09 Jun 2018 (Stephen Harris)
This weekend sees what is effectively the relaunch of this pub by the Five Points Brewery. It is great that they have chosen to mark the occasion with a large cask beer festival – showing the commitment of both pub and brewery to this format. I note only the beers I drank. The pub will close for a couple of weeks in the late-summer for a full refurbishment and restoration of the pizza kitchen.
Wild Beer Co. - River of Darkness (collaboration with Left Handed Giant) | 3.90 | | A superb, complex, dark beer. Smoke and chilli and syrup. Brilliant. |
Magic Rock - Magic Spanner | 3.90 | | Golden. Hop-filled, yet wonderfully mellow and honeyed. |
Brew York - X-Panda v.10 Pacific Jade, Southern Cross & Summit | 4.50 | | I fully expected to enjoy this and I did. |
Zapato (initially at least a cuckoo) - Zapata Pale Mirabelle Plum | 5.50 | | Similar to the Pale but in better condition and enlivened by some plum. |
Zapato (initially at least a cuckoo) - Zapata Pale | 5.50 | | A murky Pale Ale; a bit flat from gravity dispense. |
15 May 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening visit and the pub is quiet, as seems to be the current norm. Five Points Brewery now have possession and it is good to see a few of their beers on the bar.
Five Points - Best Bitter (collaboration with Lost and Grounded) | 4.80 | | This is a soft, fruity, amber-coloured, traditional Bitter. Seems perfect for all those people who grumble that London breweries don’t brew fruity, traditional Bitters any more. |
Milton - Minotaur Mild | 3.30 | Not Tried
Milton - Pegasus | 4.10 | Not Tried
Marble - Pint (was 3.9%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Five Points - Railway Porter | 4.80 | Not Tried
Five Points - Five Points Pale | 4.40 | Not Tried
Burning Sky - Plateau (was 3.5%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Wild Beer Co. - Bibble | 4.20 | Not Tried
Gipsy Hill - Hepcat | 4.60 | Not Tried
06 Apr 2018 (Stephen Harris)
This pub has recently been acquired from Milton Brewery by the nearby Five Points Brewery and will be the latter brewery’s tap. But it’s presently in a kind of limbo awaiting refurbishment. The kitchen is closed and only a few customers are present tonight.
Three Brothers - The Ex Wife | 3.70 | | As one would anticipate from the name, this is a Bitter. Amber-coloured, traditional and rather good. |
Milton - Minotaur Mild | 3.30 | Not Tried
Milton - Pegasus | 4.10 | Not Tried
Milton - Nero | 5.00 | Not Tried
Milton - Minerva | 4.60 | Not Tried
21 Aug 2017 (Magnus Greel)
Long overdue on my 'to do list' and pleased to see the onus is on wet sales with a small range of pizzas on offer. One other customer during our early afternoon stay. Helpful barman offered us a taster of all the cask beers, without prompting.
Milton - Minerva | 4.60 | | Clear golden ale with a good white head, smooth palate, semi dry and has reasonable fine carbonation |
Milton - Minotaur Mild | 3.30 | Not Tried
Milton - Nero | 5.00 | Not Tried
Milton - Dionysus | 3.60 | Not Tried
Milton - Saturnalia | 5.30 | Not Tried
Tydd Steam - American Eagle | 4.50 | Not Tried
Milton - Apollo | 6.20 | Not Tried
