The first call on a tour of Good Beer Guide pubs with a 1960s vintage coach. Many of the people on the tour had not been here before and were very impressed.

13:00 visit. Halfway point on a sticky round South-East Kent ride. Doris looked well and Kate is always smiling. Plenty of passing trade, cyclists and regulars in and my bike makes for a good conversation piece with some too!

13:00 visit. Having been to nearby Hamstreet for the bike jumble/show, this was the perfect stopping point for all Marsh/Coastal bound riders today, with the long awaited "balmy" weather bringing the crowds out in abundance. Perfect.

12:30 visit. I originally planned to come here via Manston Air show on Saturday. That turned into a 10 mile-tailback nightmare for the majority, so I came here instead on this overcast, windy but dry Sunday. A few people in with Doris on duty in the side bar dispensing what was left of the 12, seemingly very good, festival ales and 4 decent Ciders. Kate mentioned that they did well and were very busy on the Saturday.

Evening from just after 1900 opening. A good old man from Devon had brought some brown coloured black sausage from Ludlow to share with us. He then fuelled up on cherry brandies for the walk back to Appledore railway station.

14:00 visit. Having been to an event at nearby sunny Hamstreet this was the obvious stopping point on my Marsh bike ride. Doris was in the bar today surrounded by good friends with daughter Kate doing the honours behind the bar. Good mixed crowd inside and out and two, well travelled micro ales noted.

14:00 visit. Good to be back at my favourite pub in Kent, for a first visit in 2013. Kate was kept busy with a decent crowd of locals and day-trippers. The garden was pleasant and other bikers visiting made for small talk. The upcoming beer festival will be on 22nd June.

****RE-OPENED TUESDAY 1ST JUNE 2021 AND FROM 20TH JULY HOURS ARE 12-3, 6-9 TUESDAY TO SUNDAY ONLY (CLOSED MONDAY) (seating now inside and outside permitted) ***** One of the best pubs in England. It's in CAMRA's national pub inventory because it hasn't really changed much in the last 100 years. In fact in 2011 the Jemison family celebrated 100 years of running the pub. All beers are on gravity and Goacher's is a regular. It's locally known as Doris's after the last landlady. Before that it was Alf's. A 20 minute (no more no less) brisk walk from / to Appledore railway station. Local CAMRA branch Pub of the Year 2015. The handpumps atop the pewter bar counter were used once upon a time but not now. Extensive garden for fair-weather use. Regrettably Doris died in April 2016. The pub closed for some weeks as a result of the bereavement. Re-opened, hopefully forever, on Saturday 11th June 2016. Presume it will soon become known as Kate's! Card payments now accepted here.

We have visited this pub 138 times, seen 207 different beers and tried 128 of them.
