Tasting Summary

These comments are the opinion of the individual reviewer and represent what they thought of the beer on a particular day in a particular pub. If a review is less favourable, it may be because the beer suffered somewhere in the supply chain between them and the brewery.

IanGood26 Jul 2008 Good fullness, richness in the mouth, hinting at the richness of oysters. Sharpness on finish. bit too much burnt malt maybe, but actually a very good half. Maybe even a bit too rich for me. Tasty and well put together. Some blackberry fruit

Lobster Shack (formerly The Whitstable Brewery Bar), Whitstable, Kent

BlairPoor07 Mar 2008 Served ice cold in a plastic cup. Tasted nothing, might as well of been a pint of guinness extra cold.

BrianExcellent26 Nov 2005 Great chocolate and coffee aroma and sweet aftertaste.
BrianExcellent23 Sep 2005 Wonderfully rich and fresh. Dark chocolate and malty.
BrianGood10 Sep 2005 This is so rich that I could only manage the one.
AndrewAcceptable04 Sep 2005 Sweet with a burnt edge and an oyster rich taste on the finish.
AndrewUndrinkable20 Aug 2005 I'm sure when Brian had this 3 days ago it was as loverly as he said but in those 3 days it had degraded and was now only fit for putting on your chips. I took it back and he took the barrel off and swapped my drink for another so no complaints there.
BrianExcellent17 Aug 2005 Winner of this years gold medal at the Kent Beer Festival. So, say no more.

The Butchers Arms, Herne, Kent

IanGood29 Oct 2005 Black beer with thin beige head. Lots of chocolate and molasses and richness that comes from the oysters. Some acids to balance the richness.

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton, Central London

IanAcceptable28 Oct 2005 Fine, bit acidic. Some creamyness in mouth. Think that the glass wasn't properly washed before as it had aroma of whiskey

Kent Beer Festival 2005, Canterbury, Kent

IanAcceptable21 Jul 2005 Smell of molasses, flavour is dry with good mouth feel, finish is dry, just not quite there as a beer. Chewy coffee flavoured malts in this black stout
