It is easy to forget, when celebrating the great resurgence of pubs and brewing in this part of London, that this pub was very much in the vanguard.

I’m here early evening (around 6:45pm), but it is already busy, with every table taken.
BeerABVScoreNotes

Just a quick visit tonight as I had a delivery to make to the landlord and was meeting my mate Robert here before moving on.

This was meant to be just a recce visit to the latest beer festival, but in the end I did not find time to return for a fuller session. Twenty-five beers on from a festival list of 53. I list just the two I drank, plus others from local breweries.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Sambrook's - Pumphouse Pale Ale4.20ExcellentA light gold colour. Citrus hop taste on pale malt background.
Isle of Purbeck - Best3.60AcceptableBrown coloured. Rather thin for a best bitter.

Early to mid-evening visit. Quite crowded and I gave up my seat after a while to join a friend who was standing at the bar. Good to see the Bar Billiards table in use.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Milton - Saturnalia5.30ExcellentGolden coloured. Excellent fruity hop aroma. Sweetish malt and plenty of tropical fruit and sharp lemony hop character.
Milton - Sparta4.30GoodAlways my default choice of the Milton range. A balanced, golden, malt and hops type beer.
Milton - Minotaur Mild3.30AcceptableNot in the best condition tonight unfortunately. Dark and mildly toasty.

It’s Beer Festival time at the Pembury and the pub is very busy when I arrive at 6:30. By 8 it is approaching gridlock at the bar and I decide to call it a night. This is just a partial list of the beers available on handpump and stillage.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Elland - American Robust Porter5.20ExcellentFull-flavoured, roasted and rich with some US hop notes.
Acorn - Delta IPA5.00GoodAnother in the long series of Acorn single-hop beers. They are all good. This one quite mellow.
Broughton - Bramling Cross4.20AcceptableAmber-coloured. A bit disappointing. Thin, toffee, dusty hops.
Isle of Purbeck - Force Four4.00AcceptableGold-coloured and lightly malty.

Real ale is currently very fashionable in Hackney and the Pembury is full of 'Hackney Hipsters' drinking gallons of the stuff whilst tucking in to the home-cooked pizzas.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Son of Sid - Muck Cart Mild3.50ExcellentA good, black mild with a toasty tase and a dry, bitter aftertaste - could perhaps do with a little more body.
Buntingford - Highwayman IPA3.60GoodA mid-brown, standard session bitter. Juicy malt but little hop character.

Called in after Pig's Ear festival to find a most rare beer on the bar.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Three Tuns - Stout4.40ExcellentSmooth and malty black stout with a myriad of dark flavours such as coffee, chocolate and toffee to give a full flavoured beer that carries through to the finish. My score 17/20.
26 Feb 2011 (Ian)
Beer festival time. Met up with a recently arrived Aussie from Ratebeer and the legend that is Chriso. I'd forgotten how much I like this pub, an oasis in the middle of Hackney
BeerABVScoreNotes
Leatherbritches - Dr. Johnson4.00GoodGood bitter
Milestone - Old Oak4.10GoodDry malt aroma. Decent premium best bitter with decent dry brown malts. Tasty enough and pretty drinkable
Milton - Phoebe4.30GoodReally drinkable golden ale with good lemon flavour
Leatherbritches - Dovedale4.40AcceptableOK bitter served on gravity
Quantock - Stout4.50PoorBlack beer. Lasting beige head. Ok stout. Not that keen charcoal. Medicinal. Not keen

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E8 1JH.

This pub was built in around 1866 and for many years was a Truman’s house. By the 1970s it was best known as a live music venue. The pub was refurbished in 1983 and by 1986 had been acquired by Banks & Taylor Brewery. Closed for five and a half years from 1998, it re-opened but led a precipitous existence until acquired by Milton Brewery in 2006. In May 2018 the keys passed to the nearby Five Points Brewery. It is a large, stone and brick building on a busy junction near Hackney Downs and Central railway stations. The long wooden bar has 6 handpumps (down from 16 in Milton’s time). There is a bar billiards table, a pizza kitchen and a small outside seating area beside the road junction.

We have visited this pub 85 times, seen 231 different beers and tried 163 of them.
