It is easy to forget, when celebrating the great resurgence of pubs and brewing in this part of London, that this pub was very much in the vanguard.

Just a quick visit tonight as I had a delivery to make to the landlord and was meeting my mate Robert here before moving on.

This was meant to be just a recce visit to the latest beer festival, but in the end I did not find time to return for a fuller session. Twenty-five beers on from a festival list of 53. I list just the two I drank, plus others from local breweries.
Sambrook's - Pumphouse Pale Ale | 4.20 | | A light gold colour. Citrus hop taste on pale malt background. |
Isle of Purbeck - Best | 3.60 | | Brown coloured. Rather thin for a best bitter. |
Brentwood - Marvellous Maple Mild | 3.70 | Not Tried
Redemption - Trinity | 3.00 | Not Tried
London Fields - Hackney Hopster | 4.20 | Not Tried
Hackney - American Pale Ale | 4.50 | Not Tried | First beer of the festival to run out. |

Early to mid-evening visit. Quite crowded and I gave up my seat after a while to join a friend who was standing at the bar. Good to see the Bar Billiards table in use.
Milton - Saturnalia | 5.30 | | Golden coloured. Excellent fruity hop aroma. Sweetish malt and plenty of tropical fruit and sharp lemony hop character. |
Milton - Sparta | 4.30 | | Always my default choice of the Milton range. A balanced, golden, malt and hops type beer. |
Milton - Minotaur Mild | 3.30 | | Not in the best condition tonight unfortunately. Dark and mildly toasty. |
Black Country - Fireside Bitter | 5.00 | Not Tried
Milton - Pegasus | 4.10 | Not Tried

It’s Beer Festival time at the Pembury and the pub is very busy when I arrive at 6:30. By 8 it is approaching gridlock at the bar and I decide to call it a night. This is just a partial list of the beers available on handpump and stillage.
Elland - American Robust Porter | 5.20 | | Full-flavoured, roasted and rich with some US hop notes. |
Acorn - Delta IPA | 5.00 | | Another in the long series of Acorn single-hop beers. They are all good. This one quite mellow. |
Broughton - Bramling Cross | 4.20 | | Amber-coloured. A bit disappointing. Thin, toffee, dusty hops. |
Isle of Purbeck - Force Four | 4.00 | | Gold-coloured and lightly malty. |
Kelham Island (probably brewed by Thornbridge now) - Bête Noire | 5.50 | Not Tried
Son of Sid - Muck Cart Mild | 3.50 | Not Tried
Bollington - Park Life | 4.10 | Not Tried
06 Jan 2012 (Stephen Harris)
Real ale is currently very fashionable in Hackney and the Pembury is full of 'Hackney Hipsters' drinking gallons of the stuff whilst tucking in to the home-cooked pizzas.
Son of Sid - Muck Cart Mild | 3.50 | | A good, black mild with a toasty tase and a dry, bitter aftertaste - could perhaps do with a little more body. |
Buntingford - Highwayman IPA | 3.60 | | A mid-brown, standard session bitter. Juicy malt but little hop character. |
Milton - Minotaur Mild | 3.30 | Not Tried
Milton - Pegasus | 4.10 | Not Tried
Milton - Sparta | 4.30 | Not Tried
Milton - Nero | 5.00 | Not Tried
Milton - Marcus Aurelius | 7.50 | Not Tried
Milton - Dionysus | 3.60 | Not Tried
Milton - Justinian | 3.90 | Not Tried
09 Dec 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Called in after Pig's Ear festival to find a most rare beer on the bar.
Three Tuns - Stout | 4.40 | | Smooth and malty black stout with a myriad of dark flavours such as coffee, chocolate and toffee to give a full flavoured beer that carries through to the finish. My score 17/20. |
26 Feb 2011 (Ian)
Beer festival time. Met up with a recently arrived Aussie from Ratebeer and the legend that is Chriso. I'd forgotten how much I like this pub, an oasis in the middle of Hackney
Leatherbritches - Dr. Johnson | 4.00 | | Good bitter |
Milestone - Old Oak | 4.10 | | Dry malt aroma. Decent premium best bitter with decent dry brown malts. Tasty enough and pretty drinkable |
Milton - Phoebe | 4.30 | | Really drinkable golden ale with good lemon flavour |
Leatherbritches - Dovedale | 4.40 | | OK bitter served on gravity |
Quantock - Stout | 4.50 | | Black beer. Lasting beige head. Ok stout. Not that keen charcoal. Medicinal. Not keen |
