It is easy to forget, when celebrating the great resurgence of pubs and brewing in this part of London, that this pub was very much in the vanguard.

This was meant to be just a recce visit to the latest beer festival, but in the end I did not find time to return for a fuller session. Twenty-five beers on from a festival list of 53. I list just the two I drank, plus others from local breweries.

Early to mid-evening visit. Quite crowded and I gave up my seat after a while to join a friend who was standing at the bar. Good to see the Bar Billiards table in use.

It’s Beer Festival time at the Pembury and the pub is very busy when I arrive at 6:30. By 8 it is approaching gridlock at the bar and I decide to call it a night. This is just a partial list of the beers available on handpump and stillage.

Real ale is currently very fashionable in Hackney and the Pembury is full of 'Hackney Hipsters' drinking gallons of the stuff whilst tucking in to the home-cooked pizzas.

Called in after Pig's Ear festival to find a most rare beer on the bar.

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E8 1JH.
This pub was built in around 1866 and for many years was a Truman’s house. By the 1970s it was best known as a live music venue. The pub was refurbished in 1983 and by 1986 had been acquired by Banks & Taylor Brewery. Closed for five and a half years from 1998, it re-opened but led a precipitous existence until acquired by Milton Brewery in 2006. In May 2018 the keys passed to the nearby Five Points Brewery. It is a large, stone and brick building on a busy junction near Hackney Downs and Central railway stations. The long wooden bar has 6 handpumps (down from 16 in Milton’s time). There is a bar billiards table, a pizza kitchen and a small outside seating area beside the road junction.
