Dark Star - Critical Mass | 7.80 | ![]() | My final ale from Planet Thanet 2010 and the best one of the day. Lots going on in this superbly tasty dark, big strong un'. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Kent Pale Ale | 6.50 | ![]() | An excellant IPA. As it should be as well. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Black Pearl Oyster Stout | 6.20 | ![]() | Excellant. Big, dark, tasty and strong? |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - ÜberHop | 5.20 | ![]() | Superb. New ale from Ramsgate. Was doing a roaring trade selling from his own seperate bar area. |
Brew Wharf - Hoptimum | 5.20 | ![]() | Not in the programme and an excellant ale. |
Wantsum - 1381 | 3.80 | ![]() | Another good offering from Kents other newish micro. |
Nelson - Spinnaker | 4.00 | ![]() | My first at the fest! |
Nelson - Baggy Wrinkle Brown Ale | 4.50 | ![]() | A new and very good ale from Nelson. |
Old Dairy (being contract brewed after it closed) - Gold Top | 4.30 | ![]() | Better than the Red Top. Nice ale. |
Purple Moose - Easter Ale | 3.90 | ![]() | A "theme" beer. Had before, but struggled in the crowds to find what I really wanted! |
Allendale - Golden Plover | 4.00 | ![]() | Refreshing and in good condition. |
Old Dairy (being contract brewed after it closed) - Red Top | 3.80 | ![]() | A reasonable first offering from this new Kent micro. |
Wantsum - More's Head (previously 3.4% & 3.5%) | 3.70 | ![]() | Another new one from Wantsum. |
Beer | ABV | Score | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Dark Star - Imperial Stout | 10.50 | ![]() | Astonishing. |
Oakham - White Dwarf | 4.30 | ![]() | I hardly get to drink this anymore which is a shame as it is one of my favourites, great body over a wheat/golden ale with plenty of citrus yellow grapefruit fruit. |
Blackwater (sub-brand of Salopian) - Rockabilly | 4.10 | ![]() | Recommendation from Martin the Mildman. Pale gold, thin white head. Lovely hoppy aroma. Some pale malt. Lovely strong hop on the finish. Hoppiest beer I had at the beer festival. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - ÜberHop | 5.20 | ![]() | Gold, thin white disappearing head. Not a strong aroma, but some hop. It grew on me as it went down and by the end I really enjoyed the hops on the end. Lovely. |
Ilkley - Lotus IPA (was 5.6%) | 5.50 | ![]() | Hazy gold, thin white head. Very drinkable in the body, hops are very decent on finish. Very drinkable but needs something more. |
Acorn - Cascade IPA | 5.00 | ![]() | Copper gold colour. Bit of fart as well as hop on aroma. It's ok, not very Cascade-y, some hop, but could be hoppier. |
Old Dairy (being contract brewed after it closed) - Red Top | 3.80 | ![]() | Beautiful deep amber colour, virtually no head. Malty. Slight vague hop. Malty bitter, bit of wateryness on finish, no huge hop at all. It is very malty. Kind of ok. |
Old Dairy (being contract brewed after it closed) - Gold Top | 4.30 | ![]() | Gold, no head. Fairly decent little bit of flowery hop. It's ok-ish. |
Wantsum - More's Head (previously 3.4% & 3.5%) | 3.70 | ![]() | Copper colour, slight haze, bubbly beige head. Eggy farty Burton snatch of an aroma. Not great in mouth. Not great condition either. But it's kinda ok. |
Bryson's Brews - John McGuinness | 4.20 | ![]() | I only got it because there used to be someone at work with the same name. Hazy, mid brown colour, no head. Sulphur egg aroma. Sulphur eggy beer. Not pleasant, and I ended up pouring it away. |
Beer | ABV | Score | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Goacher's - 1066 Old Ale | 6.70 | ![]() | Had to de-gas it a bit but then the wonderful moreish malts with their roasted tang and slightly sour finish kicked in. |
Eastwood & Sanders - 1872 Porter | 6.50 | ![]() | Liquorish; rich; roasted coffee; milk; sour; superb |
Great Newsome - Jem's Stout | 4.30 | ![]() | This was really very good. Smooth, with a hint of sourness and very moreish. |
Phoenix - Black Bee Porter | 4.50 | ![]() | Smells of chickens. Sweet, low hopped and slightly sulphurous. |
Milton - Nero | 5.00 | ![]() | Recommended by Blair. Heavy milk chocolate flavours but a little thin. Some beech wood flavours. The alcohol was well hidden. |
Larkins - Porter | 5.20 | ![]() | Watery top soil flavours dominated this usually superb beer. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Black Pearl Oyster Stout | 6.20 | ![]() | Sour with harsh dark chocolate flavours which failed to hide the alcohol flavours. I suspect that this is actually a superb beer if left to develop over a few days in a pub's cellar. I'll be looking out for it. |
