My first time here and my concerns about lack of choice on second day were unfounded, also much more manageable crowds I gather than on previous day...food area was especially quiet. Chatted to several acquaintances and had a great time, can't wait for next year already !...oh and obviously not listing all beers avaialable !

My third visit to Margate for this ever popular festival. As expected, Good Friday was very busy from the off and shoulder to shoulder by 3pm. All ales sampled were in top condition and good to find two ales from the new Kent Brewery, Old Dairy. Good to see many familiar faces in the crowd and behind the bar as well. Spotted fellow Pubsandbeer scribe Whinger at Ashford station and probably many other scribes here were at the fest that I've not yet had the pleasure of meeting! The music from Hobo Jones & the Junkyard Dogs, went down well and had the crowd rocking in there chairs. Well done to Thanet Camra and all the volunteers behind the bar. A good time had by all...roll on 2011!

Every year, this branch improves on an already great festival. This year adding a Camra fast queue that got us in before 12.00 and a quiet hall for us miserable old buggers who like to have a conversation over our pint. Lots of people to meet and chat with including Mark Dredge (Pencil & Spoon beer blog), Shaun from Ratebeer, Phil Lowry, the Ashford Camra group as well as my old friends Andrew and Martin. Good afternoon, even if the beer didn't wow me.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - Imperial Stout10.50ExceptionalAstonishing.
Oakham - White Dwarf4.30ExcellentI hardly get to drink this anymore which is a shame as it is one of my favourites, great body over a wheat/golden ale with plenty of citrus yellow grapefruit fruit.
Blackwater (sub-brand of Salopian) - Rockabilly4.10ExcellentRecommendation from Martin the Mildman. Pale gold, thin white head. Lovely hoppy aroma. Some pale malt. Lovely strong hop on the finish. Hoppiest beer I had at the beer festival.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - ÜberHop5.20GoodGold, thin white disappearing head. Not a strong aroma, but some hop. It grew on me as it went down and by the end I really enjoyed the hops on the end. Lovely.
Ilkley - Lotus IPA (was 5.6%)5.50GoodHazy gold, thin white head. Very drinkable in the body, hops are very decent on finish. Very drinkable but needs something more.
Acorn - Cascade IPA5.00GoodCopper gold colour. Bit of fart as well as hop on aroma. It's ok, not very Cascade-y, some hop, but could be hoppier.
Old Dairy (being contract brewed after it closed) - Red Top3.80AcceptableBeautiful deep amber colour, virtually no head. Malty. Slight vague hop. Malty bitter, bit of wateryness on finish, no huge hop at all. It is very malty. Kind of ok.
Old Dairy (being contract brewed after it closed) - Gold Top4.30AcceptableGold, no head. Fairly decent little bit of flowery hop. It's ok-ish.
Wantsum - More's Head (previously 3.4% & 3.5%)3.70AcceptableCopper colour, slight haze, bubbly beige head. Eggy farty Burton snatch of an aroma. Not great in mouth. Not great condition either. But it's kinda ok.
Bryson's Brews - John McGuinness4.20PoorI only got it because there used to be someone at work with the same name. Hazy, mid brown colour, no head. Sulphur egg aroma. Sulphur eggy beer. Not pleasant, and I ended up pouring it away.

Here with Ian "2 beers", Brian, Martin, Chris and Paul. The CAMRA-member's queue meant we got in at 11:45 and got our first beers in before 12. The quiet seating area was great and meant we could avoid the noisy man and his washboard antics on the main stage (although it was nice to hear a hill-billy version of "The Ace of Spades" as I wandered through to get my last beer. Had a chat with Phil from the Saints and Sinners brewery, Jeff & Jo and Blair who was behind the bar.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Goacher's - 1066 Old Ale6.70ExceptionalHad to de-gas it a bit but then the wonderful moreish malts with their roasted tang and slightly sour finish kicked in.
Eastwood & Sanders - 1872 Porter6.50ExceptionalLiquorish; rich; roasted coffee; milk; sour; superb
Great Newsome - Jem's Stout4.30ExcellentThis was really very good. Smooth, with a hint of sourness and very moreish.
Phoenix - Black Bee Porter4.50GoodSmells of chickens. Sweet, low hopped and slightly sulphurous.
Milton - Nero5.00GoodRecommended by Blair. Heavy milk chocolate flavours but a little thin. Some beech wood flavours. The alcohol was well hidden.
Larkins - Porter5.20AcceptableWatery top soil flavours dominated this usually superb beer.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Black Pearl Oyster Stout6.20AcceptableSour with harsh dark chocolate flavours which failed to hide the alcohol flavours. I suspect that this is actually a superb beer if left to develop over a few days in a pub's cellar. I'll be looking out for it.
