20 Dec 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Early Sunday afternoon. Quiet and civilised in here, with great sea views from my table.
Rother Valley - Blues | 5.00 | | So dark brown it’s black. Very lovely. Chocolaty and very slightly sweet. Not sure if it is a Porter or an Old Ale. |
Harvey's - Bonfire Boy | 5.80 | Not Tried
1648 - Signature | 4.40 | Not Tried
Harvey's - Old Ale (or Sussex XXXX Old Ale) | 4.30 | Not Tried
31 Aug 2012 (thebrewingman)
Friday lunchtime. Fairly busy with lots of punters taking advantage of the sun on the terrace.
Dark Star - Original | 5.00
Hastings - HPA | 4.70 | | |
Arundel - Stronghold | 4.70 | | Not to my taste. |
Harvey's - Olympia | 4.30 | Not Tried | My wife had two pints and really enjoyed them. |
02 Aug 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Caught the tail end of lunchtime dining with a change of customer profile from diners to drinkers.
Rother Valley - Boadicea Ale | 4.50 | | Very impressed with this, seems to have had a tweak in recipe. Now shown as 4.5% and with an excellent pungent, floral hop character. Good malt character imparts a biscuity background all rounded off by a lingering fruity hop flavour. My score 16/20. |
01 Mar 2012 (thebrewingman)
We did what we have been threatening to do for ages. Visit the White Rock Hotel on a nice sunny day and have a beer and some food on the terrace. Lots of others had the same idea. As usual, four beers from four different Sussex breweries including two dark ones.
Harvey's - Old Ale (or Sussex XXXX Old Ale) | 4.30
Dark Star - Old Ale (aka Old Chestnut) | 4.00
Hastings - Hastings Blonde | 3.90 | | A malty blond beer with delicate hopping. |
Rother Valley - Blues | 5.00 | Not Tried
05 May 2011 (thebrewingman)
A busy evening with a concert due to start next door at the Pavilion.
Dark Star - American Pale Ale (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 4.70
Harvey's - Olympia | 4.30
Rother Valley - Copper Ale | 4.10
Weltons - Export Stout | 4.70 | | A tad green. Could have done with longer in the cellar in my opinion. |
09 Sep 2010 (thebrewingman)
A fairly mixed crowd including some of the performers due to appear at the White Rock Pavilion next door. Nice to see they are sticking with Sussex real ales.
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40
Harvey's - Southdown Harvest Ale | 5.00
King Beer (formerly W.J. King) - Summer Ale | 4.00
Dark Star - Original | 5.00 | | Liquorice overtones came through on this one today. |
27 Jun 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
Very pleasant sitting in the shaded verandah on a warm afternoon.
Dark Star - Sussex Extra Stout | 4.50 | | Good coffee and chocolate malt flavours backed up by citrus hop flavours. Dry, bitter chocolate finish. My score 16/20. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | Very pale, very hoppy, very dry and very citrussy. Refreshing on a hot day but just a little too dry and citrussy for my taste. Score 14/20. |

Not quite sure I would agree with Martin's comments on the bar. I thought it was light, open and spacious but the old bar with it's 70s holiday camp feel had it's charm. It is still nice to see they are contiuing to stock beers from Sussex breweries and they allow dogs in certain areas. I must return in the Summer for a pint (or two) on the terrace.
Harvey's - Old Ale (or Sussex XXXX Old Ale) | 4.30 | | In superb condition. I thought there was a hole in my glass. |
Dark Star - Double Chocolate Stout | 4.50 | | A not to dry stout with the flavour of the chocolate malt coming through. |
Harvey's - Hadlow Bitter | 3.50 | Not Tried
23 Aug 2009 (Martin the Mildman)
Bar area has moved to the right of the entrance and is now modern and minimalist with glass and steel dominating. Not sure it's an improvement.
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | Not my style of beer really, being a little too hoppy for my taste but it does what it's supposed to do very well. My score 15/20. |
