03 Apr 2024 (Jack William)
Evening, pond project meeting. Pub buzzing with regulars. I took away two seed potatoes and a black sack - “heaviest sack” competition that will end in September! There is always something going on here, and it’s often quite unusual.
Long Man - Old Man | 4.30 | | Superb dark beer, full bodied and a creamy head. Proving very popular. |
Kent - Ēostre | 4.20 | | “Citrusy Easter special” and it was. The “E” on the badge was a lower case ē. |
13 Mar 2024 (Jack William)
Wednesday evening. Coldred Pond project meeting and the gloriously titled Coldred Literary Society (or Book Club) monthly meet. Huge Easter Eggs raffle dominating the back bar, new beer engine working well, loads of regulars filling up the main bar.
Long Man - Old Man | 4.30 | | Replaced the Gadd’s. Superb winter warmer. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 5 | 4.40 | | Last one out the barrel, on the new pump, very drinkable. |
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Wife of Bath's Ale | 3.90 | Not Tried
23 Feb 2024 (Jack William)
Friday evening - very busy. A new beer engine has been installed, not yet in service.
Kent - Black Gold | 4.00 | | |
Long Man - Long Blonde | 3.80 | | Last one on the old beer engine. |
14 Feb 2024 (Jack William)
Evening book club meet. Quieter here tonight for a Wednesday - perhaps not the most glamorous venue for a romantic Valentine’s night out.
Kent - Swing Low | 4.00 | | |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Seashore Blues | 4.00 | | Found this to be rather lacking in flavour and body for a Gadd’s ale. |
17 Jan 2024 (Jack William)
Mid-evening book club meeting. Lots of lively banter in both bars. Ringing the changes on the ale selection as usual. Pub is back open on its regular hours I believe.
Kent - Starry Night | 4.20 | | New barrel - despite its Christmassy theme and very drinkable. |
Romney Marsh - Murmuration | 4.00
10 Jan 2024 (Jack William)
So the pub was scheduled to be closed for a fortnight from January 1st but local Nick has stepped in to open it a few times. I got word that it would open tonight and duly made my pilgrimage. 8 locals in the first two hours, eclectic conversation as usual. Next opening is Sunday lunchtime (14th Jan) and then back to regular hours from Tuesday 16th.
Long Man - Best Bitter | 4.00
Romney Marsh - Marsh Gold | 4.10 | | Not really at its best - possibly suffering from the intermittent opening hours at present. |
22 Dec 2023 (Jack William)
Early evening. Lots of locals in. Good time, although sad to report that the pub will be closed for a fortnight from January 1 due to illness of Colin, Rachael’s octogenarian dad and relief barman. I hope that this wonderful, family run business can weather the latest challenge.
Kent - Christmas Session | 3.70 | | Brewers doing pale Xmas specials! Whatever next? |
Romney Marsh - Amber Ale | 4.20
27 Oct 2023 (Jack William)
Last chance this year for a cycle in the light - first one in just after 5 - it filled up gradually with regulars. This basic pub just works so well.
Romney Marsh - Marsh Midnight | 4.50 | | Superb darker ale. |
Kent - Session Pale | 3.70
11 Oct 2023 (Jack William)
End of a 40 mile cycle - here for the book club. Good crowd of locals as usual. Nice to wash away the taste of my last pint at Guston.
Kent - Green Ernest | 4.60 | | Pale green ale in very good condition. |
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - Kentish Best | 3.70 | | Not really to my taste. |
03 Oct 2023 (Jack William)
Early evening from opening. Filled up nicely with regulars. There is maggot racing here on Saturday night. I kid you not. What a place.
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - Green and Pale | 4.30 | | 4.2 ABV this year - super. |
Kent - Old Skool | 4.10 | | |
