Small corner shop in the pretty village of Herne opposite the church. Beer is purchased direct from the barrel in 3.5 pint bottles, mini or polypins. Check for opening hours on the beer shop website. Beer is always kept very well. Hopefully it will become a pub later in the year and from last night's visit, it is likely to serve beers from micros only
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - JHB3.80ExcellentOwner said that he had had some trouble with the fining of this barrel and had to put into minipins with extra finings before serving. Still tasted good though. Nose of grapefruit/tangerine and hops. Blond gold beer that is an easy drinking session beer with lots of interesting citrus flavours that make you want to keep trying it.

Corner shop in the pretty village of Herne serving 3 beers on this visit (Harvey's Sussex Best, Oakham JHB and Larkin's Porter) direct from the barrel for home consumption
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - JHB3.80ExceptionalPale gold colour. Wonderful aroma of hops and citrus fruit (grapefruit and tangerine). Good in mouth with a hoppy, flowery, bitter, citrus fruit finish. Superb session beer

Little corner shop in Herne that supplies up to 3 beers for home consumption. Beer is always bright and very well kept. Will become a pub in November 2005
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - JHB3.80ExceptionalPale gold colour, grapefruit and tangerine on the nose, light in the mouth with citrusy fruit, hops and a zingy finish
Larkins - Porter5.20ExceptionalLots of different flavours from the malt, coffee and chocolate amongst them. A stunning mouthful
Oakham - Bishops Farewell4.60ExceptionalSame as JHB, but fuller in mouth and a bit more malt. Altogether more satisfying

He's still got 3 barrels of Larkin's Porter and may save one for when he opens as a pub in November

He told us he has 8 barrels of JW Lees's Harvest Ale!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - JHB3.80ExceptionalThe proper use of American Hops in a beer you can and would drink all night
Larkins - Porter5.20ExceptionalWhat can I say that I haven't said before. Fantastic
JW Lees (see also Lees) - Harvest Ale11.50ExceptionalJust like a sherry. Bit too strong for a session though!
29 Jan 2005 (Ian)
Excellent beer shop with up to 4 beers available to take home. Always kept in superb condition
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - JHB3.80ExceptionalGreat grapefruit and lemon fruit with quenching dry hoppiness on end
JW Lees (see also Lees) - Harvest Ale11.50ExceptionalSensational barley wine with raisins and brown sugar balanced by a hoppy finish. Magnificent. Like drinking a good sherry

He tells me that Brains SA is coming on soon and that when he becomes a pub he'll definitely have a mild on.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Larkins - Porter5.20ExceptionalThis stuff is just fantastic. It just doesn't taste like a 5.2% beer. The caramel and burnt malt balance is perfect and I just love drinking it
Timothy Taylor - Landlord4.30AcceptablePerhaps this will get better after a day or two but at first taste it's a bit 'busy'
Oakham - JHB3.80Not Tried

Still not a pub (but will be by the end of the year he thinks)
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - JHB3.80ExceptionalA loverly pint of hoppy, dry, fruity pale beer
Larkins - Porter5.20ExceptionalEvery time I have this it gets better and better. The ballance between burnt malt and caramel is fantastic and this now rates as one of my favourite beers of all time

BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - JHB3.80ExcellentVery crisp and refreshing
Larkins - Chiddingstone4.00ExcellentCopper coloured, sweet intense beer
Larkins - Porter5.20ExcellentVery caramely and burnt. Loverly but I probably wouldn't want more than half a pint of it

This is the first time I've ever been here although I've heard a lot about it. The front room looks like a cross between a workshop and a beer-obsessed nutter's bedroom. Though some see-through plastic slitted drap you can see a row of barrels... lots of barrels. Ummmmm....I like this kind of shop.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - JHB3.80ExceptionalNow a score of Excellent from me is saying somethign when it comes to JHB. ...but this beer really was excellent. Very very hoppy but with a fruity depth to it that I've rarely tasted in pub bought pint of it. Loverly.
Mauldons - Black Adder5.30Not TriedWell I did actually try it but only a sip. Tasted like a very alcoholic porter: far too alcoholic for me.

In the middle of Herne village in Herne Street, once the Canterbury Beer Shop selling beer straight from the cask. It is now a pub (with the same owner as before) and still does off-sales which is fantastic! Voted CAMRA Kent Pub of the Year in 2008 and East Kent CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2009 (...and not surprisingly). Regarded universally as the first micropub, which has spawned many similar ventures in East Kent and throughout the UK. Real ales are kept on gravity dispense in a cold room to the right and you will view this when you walk through it to the unisex toilet at the rear. Displays a Micropub Association Certificate of Registration warranting, annually, that it adheres to the tenets and ethics of the Association's definition of a micropub. Since post-Covid re-opening in October 2021 now open 5-8 Tuesday to Friday only. The landlord and founder of the Micropub Association, Martyn Hillier, was awarded an MBE in the 2024 New Years Honours list for services to Business and to Hospitality.

We have visited this pub 380 times, seen 164 different beers and tried 135 of them.
