Visits Details

05 Aug 2014 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening visit. Pub relatively quiet and I was able to enjoy my pint at one of the little tables in the bar area.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - AM:PM4.50ExcellentThis smooth, golden, hoppy IPA sees Thornbridge right back on form in my opinion (if there was ever a suggestion of a loss of form).
Green Jack - Ripper Tripel8.50Not Tried
Weltons - Chanctonbury Ring Wheat Beer5.60Not Tried
26 Jun 2014 (Stephen Harris)
The market bins were a bit too fragrant tonight and took some getting used to, out on the decking.
BeerABVScoreNotes
WharfeBank - The Mexican5.50GoodA dryish, golden coloured beer with chilli. Most chilli beers I have drunk are dark and chocolaty, so this was a bit different. The chilli flavours build up as the pint goes down.
Hardknott - Coolfusion4.40Not Tried
19 Feb 2014 (Stephen Harris)
A Meet the Brewer event tonight with Five Points Brewing of Hackney. The beers are going down rapidly whilst I am there, but there is no sign of any brewers as such to meet – although I gather they were along later.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Five Points - Derailed Porter5.20ExcellentThick, heavy, black, bready Porter, with just a tantalising hint of sourness.
Five Points - Hook Island Red6.00GoodStrong, sticky, slightly sweet, red beer with good hops.
Five Points - Five Points Pale4.40Not TriedThis cask was drunk dry in quick time.
05 Feb 2014 (Stephen Harris)
There is a ‘Meet the Brewer’ event here tonight with Brains Brewery of Cardiff. Three cask conditioned beers and about 8 on keg – all from the pilot 'craft' brewery now in use at Brains. Plenty of brewers present, but punters a bit scarce when I called.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brains - Boilermaker6.50GoodThis was good, don’t get me wrong, but I expected even more from the description ‘Welsh Whiskey IPA’.
Brains - Shining Tsar7.50GoodA black Imperial stout. Plenty of good flavours and warmth, but a bit too acidic and a touch too much sourness for ‘excellent’ in my view.
Brains - Simply Red4.00Not Tried
13 Dec 2013 (Dosser)

BeerABVScoreNotes

A special presentation of Burning Sky beers this evening. Quite busy and we sat outside on the decking.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Burning Sky - Saison à la Provision6.50ExcellentOn key-keg dispense. A full-on, sour, Belgian farmhouse-style saison.
Burning Sky - Aurora5.60GoodBitter that is easy-drinking for its strength.
Burning Sky - Devil's Rest IPA7.00GoodHeavy-duty, strong IPA in US-style.
Burning Sky - Plateau (was 3.5%)3.40GoodVery pale, crisp and hoppy. Perhaps could do with more body.
17 Jul 2013 (Stephen Harris)
I had to meet a friend somewhere near London Bridge station in the early evening and it was an easy choice to come here. Swelteringly hot. Full of Natural Selection brewers and their friends.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Late Knights - Hairy Dog Black IPA6.00ExcellentA robust and strong Black IPA.
Natural Selection - Origin5.50GoodNatural Selection is not a fully-fledged brewery, more a Herriot Watt student project, and this beer was brewed by them at Stewart Brewing in Edinburgh. Spposedly on key-keg, but appearing to have some added carbonation. The beer is an amber-coloured Saison. Quite tart and with some subtle spicing from the yeast.
Late Knights - Morning Glory4.40AcceptableTasted a bit more ordinary than it did two days ago – but the quick half came immediately after two rather full-flavoured pints.
Oakham - JHB3.80Not Tried
15 Jul 2013 (Stephen Harris)
I should have brought my autograph book here tonight. Not crowded, but the Late Knights Brewery team are in. And there’s beer writer and researcher Pete Brown out on the patio. And who’s the fella in the natty straw boater? Garrett Oliver of course.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Late Knights - Crack of Dawn Pale Ale3.90GoodA very bitter, pale ale.
Late Knights - Morning Glory4.40GoodA best bitter, raised above the average by some very decent hops.
Late Knights - Hairy Dog Black IPA6.00Not Tried
09 Jun 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Sunday afternoon visit and just a select crowd present.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Altarnum (formerly Penpont) - An Howl5.60ExcellentGolden, full-bodied and quite hoppy.
St Austell - Cardinal Syn8.00GoodA strong, dark brown beer in a Belgian Dubbel style. Good, warming beer, but in rather lifeless condition.
Hop Back - Hop Medley3.90Not Tried

The pub is found in Southwark, Central London, SE1 9AG.

Small pub on the north side of Borough Market run by the same people who own the Utobeer bottled beer stall in the market itself. The bar has 3 hand pulls serving UK cask beers and 6 taps supplying continental and world beers. An extensive bottle beer selection is also available from the fridges behind the bar. The bar has stripped wood floors, pale beige walls and a historic Pilkington glass ceiling. A decked patio provides extra space and seating. Definitely an excellent addition to the Southwark beer scene.

We have visited this pub 151 times, seen 348 different beers and tried 249 of them.
