Visits Details

21 May 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Late-evening visit. Plenty of customers. As well as the cask beers listed (and a third Cronx special had already run out), there was also a tempting range of Lovibond’s beers on the keg taps – for which I had neither the time nor the budget.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cronx - Mad-Ass Entire Chilli Porter5.20ExcellentA version of the regular Entire, brewed with added chillies. Thick and black. Heavy liquorice tastes that slightly overpowerthe chillie – I’d have preferred itthe other way around. Still pretty good though.
Cronx - Single Hop IPA Galaxy6.00ExcellentI do like Galaxy-hopped beers. This was outstanding. Strong, pale and hoppy.
Brew Wharf - Saints & Sinners Imperial Jack (with Oak & Vanilla)7.20ExcellentA one-off mini-pin, served on gravity dispense. This is a big-hitting, brown, ESB-type beer, brewed in by saints & Sinners in collaboration with 21st Amendment at the Brew Wharf plant. This little cask has the addition of oak chips and vanilla, to provide a very complex taste.
Redemption - Pale Ale3.80Not Tried
11 Mar 2013 (Stephen Harris)
A special Monday evening presentation of Rebel Brewing beers, thought to be the brewery’s first appearance in London.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brecon - Twilight Beacons4.00GoodDark amber in colour; mostly malt flavours.
Rebel - Milk Stout5.20GoodA pleasant enough beer, but a little off-style I thought. Dark brown (rather than black) in colour. It has some lactose sweetness, but also some bitterness and some evidence of hops.
Rebel - Eighty Shilling5.00GoodA pretty authentic, heavy, malt-driven beer in the Scottish style. Not my favourite style to be honest, but it wins an extra half a star for being warming on a very cold day.
Rebel - Helene5.30GoodBilled as a ‘Belgian-style Wheat Beer’, it tasted and looked to me like a German dunkle-weiss. Amber-coloured, with bananary, estery tastes.
Oakham - Bishops Farewell4.60Not Tried
Rebel - Nightshade German Style Wheat Beer5.50Not TriedAvailable on cellar run.
Rebel - Henri5.20Not TriedAvailable on cellar run.
02 Mar 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Welsh beer festival in progress. Just a rapid visit from me between market shopping and heading to Leyton to watch football. Beers from the stillage in rather tired condition.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Vale of Glamorgan (VOG) - Grog y vog4.30AcceptableA golden beer that did not live up to its tasting notes, with the fresh aroma and flavour of Styrian Goldings rather hard to detect.
Neath - Dewi Sant4.80AcceptablePale, with a sticky, malty, caramelly taste. Flat condition.
Cerddin - Cascade4.80AcceptableThe beer’s name and its pump clip suggest a hoppy beer, but this sample was dominated by caramel. Flat condition.
02 Mar 2013 (Wittenden)
Early doors on a Saturday morning.I was enroute to Liverpool Street Station having admired The Shard. A welsh beer festival was in progress, with several unfamiliar beers on stillage in the front area.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brecon - Genesis 2:ii Imperious Beacons7.50ExcellentPerhaps a bit ambitious for early in the day, a dark brown, toffeeish dry stout.

BeerABVScoreNotes
Tap East - Coffee in the Morning (has been 5.7% too)5.60GoodBlack stout with a little too much roast malt flavour for my taste making it rather unbalanced. Very strong bitter roast coffee flavour and finish. My score 15/20.
21 Jan 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Very quiet in here, early evening on a Monday.

15 Jan 2013 (Martin the Mildman)
Busy inside, not so many outside in the cold.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Tap East - Tonic Ale3.00GoodVery pale light ale with a good fruity hop character and a fruity but bitter finish. My score 15/20.
Tap East - Merry Old4.00AcceptableA spiced porter style beer, dark brown in colour with some maltiness but mainly dominated by added spices not entirely to my taste. My score 14/20.
29 Dec 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Busy late Saturday afternoon.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - Winter Wraith4.50GoodBilled as a spiced stout, black with good roast malt character and some spicy bitterness. My score 15/20.
27 Dec 2012 (Stephen Harris)
Central London is spookily quiet today, but even a small crowd is enough to fill this place.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - Critical Mass7.80GoodA dark, complex, malty, winter warmer. Good, but not really my kind of thing. Hideously expensive, so just a half.
Oldershaw - Caskade4.20Not Tried

The pub is found in Southwark, Central London, SE1 9AG.

Small pub on the north side of Borough Market run by the same people who own the Utobeer bottled beer stall in the market itself. The bar has 3 hand pulls serving UK cask beers and 6 taps supplying continental and world beers. An extensive bottle beer selection is also available from the fridges behind the bar. The bar has stripped wood floors, pale beige walls and a historic Pilkington glass ceiling. A decked patio provides extra space and seating. Definitely an excellent addition to the Southwark beer scene.

We have visited this pub 151 times, seen 348 different beers and tried 249 of them.
