Nice now that it is no smoking. Only a few people in.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Harvey's - Armada Ale4.50ExcellentAt a mear £2 a pint this was a complete bargain. First pint disappeared in 5 mins. And the second pint lasted 10 mins. Great Harvey's yeast on end. Not quite as tangeriney as I would like.

Early evening on a Friday and it was pretty lively.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Castle Rock - Black Gold3.50AcceptableIt's a mild. Slightly sweaty hop on finish. Some dusty coal powder. Stronger hop presence than I would expect and less roasted malt. In fact not much malt at all.

I came in to see what guest was on and was pleased to find Gadd's Dogbolter, a winter beer in the summer. Again not busy, but the music was good.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - DogBolter Dark Porter5.60ExcellentI'm guessing this was a barrel from the winter that has been left to mature. Smooth. Good roasted grains with a hint of dark fruits and a finish that grows and grows. Hop and blackberry. Gorgeous. Choc, black cherry aroma is great. Full in mouth.

Friday early evening and I was only here because my train failed to stop at Folkestone West.
BeerABVScoreNotes

I hadn't planned to come here, but Andrew mentioned it that morning so I had to didn't I? Nearly the end of the festival, but it seemed to have gone well and they had sold their 20 beers over the four days which is encouraging.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Kemptown - Ye Olde Trout4.50AcceptableThis wasn't on the list, but the brought it in just in case as a wildcard. Fruit and odd beer, but distinctive.

The first evening of their Easter Beer Festival and a fair number of people in. I like the informality of this little festival.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Goacher's - 1066 Old Ale6.70ExceptionalCurrently the best Kent beer in Kent? Yes, I think so. The malt, the sourness, the chocolate are heavenly. Stuns you and enlivens the tongue like the best sour dark cherry thing you could imagine.
Harviestoun - Bitter & Twisted3.80GoodDistinctive hop aroma, verges on the sweaty sox, but the citrus hop finish is good. Easy drinking with a good mouthfeel.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Dragon's Blood ESB5.20GoodI ended up talking to Eddie Gadd about this beer on the Saturday of the Planet Thanet BF. He said that when he put it in barrels, it was so bitter it made his eyes water but that he was really happy with how the hops had softened and how the beer finally turned out. It's an amber beer with thin beige head. English hop aroma, little bit of cheddar cheese. Malts are reasonably juicy and then lovely floral hop gives a lasting finish.
White - Dark Mild4.00AcceptableDark ruby colour, haze, thin beige head. Rich fruity mild. Aroma has molasses and a slight sourness. Dark malts and smoothness in mouth and then tingly hop on end. Distinctive mild with opens up as the half pint I had went down.
Nelson - Task Force 255.50AcceptableI guess this is named after the Task Force sent to the Falkland Islands, 25 years ago. Slight haze on the copper colour with thin beige head. Earthy hop and some rich fruity malt aroma. Very fruity in mouth, fruit salad mix. Surprising fruit and hop finish. Tingly, but still muddy/earthy.

Good college basement bar feel in this pub.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - English Pale Ale4.50ExcellentPossibly the best proper brown bitter in Britain. They have taken the best bits of US know how and stuck on a UK bitter. Fantastically hoppy.

Fairly buzzing pub early Wednesday evening. Dart board and pool table both being used in the rear area. College basement bar atmosphere.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - English Pale Ale4.50ExcellentI was so excited to get a new Dark Star beer. Made with Challenger and East Kent Goldings hops added late to the boil and Maris Otter malt. Copper colour with lasting thin off white head. Earthy hop aroma, some late citrus. Earthy in mouth. Interestingly simple yet good quality pale ale/bitter? Reasonably full in the mouth with some pear drop. Then a drying finish with earthy hops. If only all British beer could be this good. Such a cut above your average 4.x% beer. The subtle malt flavour in mouth, followed by dryness in amazing. Like licking a calf skin glove worn by the woman you love. Classy. Subtle bitterness on finish. Not huge not intense but brilliant for its subtlety, quality and the way it makes you feel. Some biscuit on aroma. Moderate juicy malt in mouth. Amazing.

Very early Friday evening in first week in January, so not surprisingly it wasn't very full. Probably the best beer line up in Folkestone.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA4.50GoodBeautiful clear amber colour with good lacing on the glass as the pint went down. Served in the new Adnams glassware. Great hoppy aroma with sweet strawberry too. Full malts in mouth, some syrupyness and then sweet hop finish. The finish was just slightly dusty too which took the edge off it being a 4/5
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 54.40Not TriedThe men at the table next to me were drinking this and saying how good it was and called it "a half of 10." Ha, ha.

Fairly quiet very late Friday afternoon. Usual 4 beers on, Adnams Bitter, Gadd's No. 5, Skrimshander and Ringwood Old Thumper plus Cottage Santa's Steaming Ale as the guest.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA4.50ExcellentOnly had a half, but this was stunning. Brilliant strawberry malt fruit and great hop. Lovely. Beer of the day.
Cottage - Santa's Steaming Ale5.50GoodFrankly I don't remember much. I lost my notebook you see. It was very dark brown with a beige head, lots of malt and some dark fruits. The rest is a bit of a blur.
