I got here around 2.30 on a Friday afternoon expecting the lunchtime crowd to have gone and the after work mob not to have turned up yet. So I was expecting it to be fairly quiet. Except it wasn't, it was really quite busy. However, that really didn't matter as once I was down the stairs I heard my name called and there sat at one of the tables were Frank and Charlie ex landlord and landlady of the ex Mogul in Dover. It has been over 2 years since I saw them (they have been in Spain) and it was a real pleasure to see them again. It felt that for an hour I was back in The Mogul on a Friday afternoon after bunking off work early just chatting away with the two of them, like I'd seen them last week. Fantastic. I was still buzzing about it the next day. They say that they have got itchy feet and may well be back within 2 years and looking for a pub to take over. Oh man, please, please, please let that happen.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - DogBolter Dark Porter | 5.60 | | Brown/ruby colour with lasting beige head. Smelt and tasted fresh. Dark fruits, dark plums, sweet damsons and then choc, milk choc, slight powder that then slides into the dryness of the hop finish. Great balanced porter. Juice and liquorice are just right, the rich fruit is just right and the dryness. Great English porter. Really tasty and full of flavour. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 5 | 4.40 | | I had a swift half of this after the Dogbolter as I needed to catch the train. This is quickly becoming East Kent's best, best bitter. Attractive clear russet colour. Perfect malt/hop balance with tingly hop finish. Hop tends towards the aggressive as the beer finish progresses. Good beer. |
Ringwood - Old Thumper (now superseded by 5.1% version - separate entry) | 5.60 | Not Tried
Adnams - Southwold Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA | 4.50 | Not Tried | Charlie had this and thought that it may be a bit tired and coming to the end of the barrel |

I was inbetween trains and found Alistair down in the basement so we had a few. Nice feeling on a Friday with people coming here for a drink at the end of the working week. Good beer too.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 5 | 4.40 | | Excellent best bitter and I can't remember why I don't drink it more often. Good malts and a biting bitterness on the end |
Dark Star - Dark Star The Original | 5.00 | | Labelled as Dark Star Original. Lovely black beer with sourness and roasted malts and a juicy texture to it too. Very moreish. |
Banks's - Ringwood Fortyniner | 4.90 | Not Tried
Adnams - Southwold Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA | 4.50 | Not Tried

Still my favourite pub in Folkestone. It was a blistering hot day so I had a pint of the Bitburger lager and very nice it was too. No guest was on so it was just the 4 regulars plus 2 ciders

Stopped off here on my way home. They always have a copy of What's Brewing and Beer to read. Same beer line up as Saturday. A light smattering of locals in the front bar.
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA | 4.50 | | A little more hoppy than usual. Great tasting beer. |
Dark Star - Dark Star The Original | 5.00 | | Badged as Dark Star Original. It lacked a little of its freshness from Saturday, but still a very good malty beer with a surprising hop finish |

I cycled here from Ashford through Aldington, Lympne and Hythe. This is the best pub for real ale in Folkestone for me. Nice staff too. I had 2 pints of iced water with my pints of Dark Star Original. I came back after the England vs Portugal game and had another.
Dark Star - Dark Star The Original | 5.00 | | Served straight from the barrel as the lines were being cleaned. Dark malt aroma. A rich beer with plenty of depth. Some dryness on end. I loved it. Had good complexity and depth of flavour to the malts, but never got sickly or sweet. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 5 | 4.40 | Not Tried
Ringwood - Old Thumper (now superseded by 5.1% version - separate entry) | 5.60 | Not Tried

Fairly empty on Thursday early evening. Some locals at the bar.
Burton Bridge - Top Dog Stout | 5.00 | | Black beer with bubbly lasting beige head. Choc aroma with some sourness. Velvet choc in mouth with liquorice sourness on finish. Choc does dominate but the sourness balances it. Almost Pontefract cake-like on end. An interesting stout with good intensity and definition of flavours |

Here for Martin's birthday along with Andrew. Arrived just after lunch at sat downstairs at the rear where a stillage had been set up to sell their festival beers on gravity dispense. Goodish festival with enough choice to keep you interested along with the regular 5 beers on handpull at the bar.
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA | 4.50 | | When I got to Chambers I didn't realise the festival was at the back, so I started with a pint of this. They were cleaning the lines, so I had this on gravity from the cask. Citric hop and strawberry malt aroma. Fullish in mouth with strawberry caramel/hop and more strawberry fudge on teh end. Wonderful |
Hopdaemon - Golden Dove | 5.00 | | Copper, thin white head. Cascade hop sweetness on aroma, some yeast, some earthiness, then creamy and sweet in mouth. Lots of strawberry. Followed by nice hopo finish. Rich and slightly sweet. Fine |
Blackawton - Penninsular Pint | 4.60 | | Copper/amber, thin cream/beige head. Muddy/earthy beer with bright citrus hops. Bit of rubber on the aroma.Typical bitter elemets of yeast hops and touch of juicy malt. Hoppy finish raises it above the norm |
Mallard - Spittin Feathers | 4.40 | | Deep ruby, beige thin head. Malty coffee and rich fruit aroma. Good in mouth with more choc/coffee with jammy strawberry. Sour hops kick in on end which is very lasting but I’m not sure this harsh sourness fits in with the rest of the beer. |
Eastwood & Sanders - Maximum Darkness Stout | 4.30 | | Black beer with no head. Lots of intense roasted amtl, lots of dryness on end. Choc/coffee. Aroma has some charcoal/choc. Some juicyness in mouth. Nice intense flavours. Seems to have a fairly healthy dollop of hop on end. |
Dark Star - IPA | 6.20 | | Golden copper with lasting off white head. Dark Star citrus hoppy aroma. Bit sweet in mouth with some sweet orange. Bit of earthiness. very nice finish. Citrus, grapefruit but with a sweetish edge. |
Goacher's - Fine Light Ale | 3.70 | | Weird. Orangey, but not as it should be. I have had it far better at times. Not off, but just not right |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 3 | 5.00 | | Don't remember too much about this. But it was an ok golden strong bitter. |
Cottage - Norman's Conquest 5% | 5.00 | | Ruby colour, no head. Slightly sour aroma, some toffee. Flavours are a bit dull. Sweetish toffee. Fine |
Rother Valley - Boadicea Ale | 4.50 | | Deep gold, bubbly off white head. Some citrus and pale malt in mouth which is both juicy and stale at the same time. Finish disappears quickly. Bit of cardboard too |

Got there around 3pm and their beer festival was fairly quiet really with plenty of seating still avaliable. In addition to their regualar beers they had 12 on gravity at the back of the pub.
Ringwood - Old Thumper (now superseded by 5.1% version - separate entry) | 5.60 | | A good ballance of hops and malt in this well rounded beer. Very drinkable. |
Mallard - Spittin Feathers | 4.40 | | A dark black pint with a creamy bitterness to it. Lots of rounded milkyness with some burnt malt and a slight sour finish. Tasted similar to Arundel Mild. |
Dark Star - IPA | 6.20 | | A large mouth feel to this strong IPA. Plenty of grapefruit and lots of citric hops on the finish. |
Goacher's - Fine Light Ale | 3.70 | | Well it didn't really taste of Goacher's Light because it had a pronounced blackcurrent bite to it. There were slight hints of mandarine but frankly this was not representitive of what I know is a fantastic beer |
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA | 4.50 | | This tasted like watered down incubus. Very drinkable but it didn't have the bite of Skrim. A weird pint really |
04 Feb 2006 (Andrew)
Got there about 5.30pm and there were a good few people in. I like the layout of this place with and its good cellar feeling.
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA | 4.50 | | Rich bitter with good ballance between hops and malt. Hints of tangerine and grapefruit |

Underground bar. Met Martin here after having a 3 hour lunch break. Too much food so I only had a couple because I was full
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA | 4.50 | | Superb. Reddish copper colour with good herby hop aroma. Red fruit and smooth im mouth. Good finish of hop zing and fruit |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - DogBolter Dark Porter | 5.60 | | Dark brown with disappearing beige head. Not as fruity as last Friday. More bitter choc/coffee and bit thinner in body. Still a nice porter though |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 5 | 4.40 | Not Tried | Sign up saying not on yet |
Ringwood - Old Thumper (now superseded by 5.1% version - separate entry) | 5.60 | Not Tried
