26 Jul 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
6th visit of the outing: A short stroll as still very much in the centre of Canterbury to Best Lane and to this ancient pub dating back to the 18th century. The pub gets its name from a 12th century Archbishop of Canterbury who had a run-in with King Henry II, leading to his murder in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170, and from where the pub is now just minutes away. It had 4 real ales on, on our visit late afternoon and we were met with friendly and prompt service. It was CAMRA branch Pub of the Year 2024.
Tatton - Parkin Porter | 4.90 | | Very good head and lacing with a creaminess on top to die for. The side of the glass holding its lacing to the end of this porter's stunning performance. A ginger-infused first bite on this brewery's porter. Tatton has now teamed up with Kent's Wantsum Brewery at St Nicholas-at-Wade from June 2024. This was due to not surviving its ever-rising operating costs in Knutsford, south-west of Manchester, but where it brewed for some 14 years. A treacle-flavouring rising up on my taste buds. A hint of dark chocolate and a smoky malt or two alongside a dry bitterness prevailing to the end and very moreish! |
Wantsum - Black Prince | 3.90 | | Head and lacing, good, lasting, fair, on this mild from St Nicholas-at-Wade, from just outside Birchington-on-Sea, and named after Edward of Woodstock (1330-1376) and known as the Black Prince. He was the eldest son of Edward III and married to Joan of Kent. He is buried in Canterbury Cathedral. The Brewery, first set up in 2009, got its name meanwhile from the Wantsum Channel, the watercourse separating the Isle of Thanet and the previous mainland of the county of Kent. A dry mildly bitter first bite. A gentle maltiness lapping up. A pleasant hoppy bitterness, from its Willamette, Fuggles and First Goldling hops, tantalising my taste buds and lingering. |
Georges - Wallasea Wench | 3.60 | Not Tried
Wantsum - Montgomery (was SS Richard Montgomery) | 4.00 | Not Tried

Came here for a decent pint after the Seven Stars, wasn’t disappointed. Amusing ‘A’ boards outside including “Nappies and politicians should be changed often - both for the same reason!”

Mad Cat - Green & Gold | 4.10 | Not Tried

Sunday afternoon, quite busy with lunches. The large table in the front window has been replace with three small tables. The open fire seems to be non-functional now. Pleasant ambience though.
Old Dairy (being contract brewed after it closed) - Idaho 7 | 4.00 | | Served in a jug and a short measure - reluctantly topped up. A well rounded pale ale in good nick. |
Exeter - Avocet Ale | 3.90 | | Rather flat and insipid. |
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Wife of Bath's Ale | 3.90 | Not Tried

Sunday lunchtime a few eaters in the far end - after a long wait at an empty bar I finally settled down in the comfy armchair with my pint for a quiet read - a family of seven came in shortly with other ideas. I drank up and departed.
