Very busy inside and out for early evening visit due to a live band in backyard and a mini-beer festival of 4 cask ales held in the large shed in the rear garden and being run as a charity fundraiser.
Black Box - Landing Gear | 3.80 | | A good head on this bitter from a brewery not tried before near Southend-on-Sea. A moreishly bitter aftertaste. |
Mighty Oak - The Old Man and The Sea | 4.10 | Not Tried
Colchester - Sun Siren | 4.20 | Not Tried | Blonde Ale |
28 Sep 2019 (Magnus Greel)
Mid afternoon fairly quiet until our group arrived, we decided to occupy the empty beer garden on a mild dry day hence leaving a couple of locals propping up the bar to carry on enjoying the peaceful relaxed atmosphere there.
Colchester - Mermaid | 3.80 | | Light citrus golden beer brewed with Chinook hops for bittering and Mosaic and Citra for flavouring and aroma |
Exmoor - Fox | 4.20 | | Delicate citrus yet slightly spicy with a sleek malty mouthfeel |

We arrived soon after 2pm opening time and were made very welcome. A proper traditional boozer.
Adnams - Old Ale | 4.10 | | |
Adnams - Southwold Bitter | 3.70 | | Some of my friends were a bit surprised that I ordered this but I just fancied a decent traditional bitter and that is exactly what I got, delicious. |

12:00 First stop on a chum's 57th birthday pub crawl. Seven of us and a group of locals soon made the pub look busy. My first visit here and I was very impressed with the breweriana on display.

A fine old pub which I find my way to all too infrequently. Just a modest number of customers (three and a half, according to the Guv’nor – in reality around ten) in mid-afternoon. I had to do a double take when one started regaling us with tales of seeing the Who play last night at Hyde Park – defiantly a different bloke to the one at the Cricketers a couple of hours earlier.
Georges - Saxon Gold | 4.00 | | Golden beer with good English hop tastes. Dryer that the Mighty Oak beer that preceded it. |
Mighty Oak - Summer Dancer | 4.50 | | Golden. Slightly sweet. Good hop content. |
Adnams - Southwold Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Crouch Vale - Essex Boys Best Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
Mighty Oak - Liberty Ale | 3.90 | Not Tried

Evening visit with a group of friends. My first visit to this pub and I was impressed.
Adnams - Southwold Bitter | 3.70 | | A fresh cask on, and absolutely superb. The true Adnams taste. |
Georges - GB Georges Best Bitter | 4.00
Mighty Oak - Oscar Wilde Mild | 3.70
Saffron - Saffron Blonde | 4.30 | | In very good condition, and quite popular tonight, but I felt it was just another pale citrusy ale. |
Viper (Mighty Oak) - Jake the Snake | 4.00 | Not Tried | Ran out. |
12 Jul 2013 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening. Our large NSEW Friday Group were one pub wonders tonight.
Adnams - Southwold Bitter | 3.70 | | Fresh cask on. Exceptionally hoppy and yeasty - perhaps a little fresh. |
Wibblers - Dengie Best | 4.10
Saffron - Saffron Blonde | 4.30 | | OK but a tad boring as many citrus beers are which makes one muse as to why they are so ubiquitous |
Mighty Oak - Oscar Wilde Mild | 3.70 | Not Tried
Viper (Mighty Oak) - Jake the Snake | 4.00 | Not Tried | Ran out |
Georges - GB Georges Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
