20 Dec 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
1st visit of the outing: Busy on my early afternoon arrival with many diners although offering, as is usual, 4 real ales. Friendly, prompt service at this centrally-placed historic pub by Gravesend's riverfront and the oldest surviving cast-iron pier in the world, built in 1834.
| Bexley - Roasty & Toasty | 4.70 | | 2nd beer of this visit: This festive dark ale, from the 2014-launched microbrewery between Erith and Slade Green, presented very good head and lacing and lasting admirably. A spiced malty first bite. A dry bitterness hurtling up with a spicy maltiness winning over from its five blends of malted barley and wheat. A touch of dark fruits climbing. A caramelised toastiness sliding downwards aided by being infused with brandy. A walk along the river before the next watering hole was very welcome after this one. |
| Titsey - Winter Wolf - Dark Amber ESB | 5.20 | | 1st beer of this visit: Good head and lacing and lasting on this dark amber ale from Tatsfield on the Kent/Surrey borders, north-east of Oxted. A dry bitter first hit. A hoppy bitterness leaping up with good lashings of caramel rising. A malty note or two from its Maris Otter, Crystal and Amber malts abseiling from the branches of the Christmas tree with a subtle sweetness. A hoppy bitterness winning over on its final leg with a mix of the English hops, Goldings and Bramling, lending it an earthy and herbal lingering taste. It was on very good form on this visit from this small microbrewery set up in 2017. |
| Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Adnams - Lighthouse | 3.40 | Not Tried | |
18 Oct 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
4th visit of the outing: A large rambling pub on the river-front mostly for the odd tourists to the area and those seeking to eat. Dating back to the 1400s, it is adorned with pictures of old Gravesend and sailing memorabilia and The Thames it sits beside. It houses a ground floor function room hosting bands. Plus, musical entertainers are accommodated on the first floor, housing the main bar and separate dining rooms, some of which overlook the Gravesend Pier and river. Not overly busy for our group of four and seated conveniently close to the bar at a somewhat sloping table reflecting the sloping floor. Attentive, friendly service from the bar staff. This one beat all the other drinking holes in Gravesend we visited for the choice of real ales. Five real ales a surprise and for a pub doubling as a restaurant without much of a pub area for just drinking in.
| Titsey - Wokko Wokko - Green Hop Pale | 4.00 | | A dry hoppy first bite on this green hopped pale from Clarks Lane Farm, Tatsfield, near Westerham and on the Kent and Surrey border. A light fruitiness rising and a fresh hoppiness winning over. A hoppy dryness sailing out on its finale downwards voyage. This green hopped pale's microbrewery began in 2017 as a one-man band by founder and head brewer, Craig Vroom. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 5 | 4.40 | Not Tried | |
| Bexley - Hukins' Ernest Green Hop Pale | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
| Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - Green and Gold (2025 Green Hop) | 5.70 | Not Tried | |
| Titsey - The Cronx | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
15 Feb 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
Not overly busy footfall for my mid-afternoon visit and in the main bar area which is quite small. The rest of it is a mass of dining areas overlooking the Gravesend Pier and river beyond. Friendly, prompt service. Met up with fellow south-east Londoner out for the real ale here.
| Wantsum - 1381 | 3.80 | | Reasonable head and lacing on this Kentish session IPA from Saint Nicholas-at-Wade, just outside Thanet's Birchington-on-Sea. A hoppy and slightly fruity mouthfeel which remained in the aftertaste. |
| Titsey - Gower Wolf | 4.00 | | Some head and lacing but not for long on this best bitter from the Kent/Surrey borders near Tatsfield. An ever so slightly vinegary first hit with an applely and sour mouthfeel lingering. |
| Brains - The Rev James Original | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Bexley - Redhouse | 4.20 | Not Tried | |
| Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Miller's Ale (originally 4.5%) | 4.20 | Not Tried | |
14 Dec 2024 (Hogan Sampling)
Situated right on the River Thames at the centre of Gravesend next to Gravesend Pier and so not surprisingly really very busy for visitors. Our group of 6 managed to find one of only a few tables in the main bar area on this mid-afternoon visit. All other tables were set aside for dining in rooms overlooking the river. Prompt, friendly service for my half here and only my third visit as I recall as exceptionally busy compared to other drinking holes locally.
| Titsey - Leveson Buck | 3.70 | | Good head and lacing on this session IPA from Titsey Brewing at Tatsfield, Westerham, and on the Kent and Surrey border. It had a lightly fruity, hoppy mouthfeel with a dry aftertaste making it very moreish. Could easily have done more than one half! |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Black Pearl Oyster Stout | 6.20 | Not Tried | |
| Nuttycombe - Snow Leopard | 4.90 | Not Tried | |
| Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - Ruby Simcoe | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
01 Dec 2018 (Magnus Greel)
Busy and boisterous mid evening mostly attracting younger folk - I sat at a table by the billiard table and didn't enjoy my beer.
| Goody Ales - Bleangate Brewery - Genesis | 3.50 | | Insipid malty syrup - vile! Unsure if it's meant to taste like that hence one sip and the rest went down the sink in the Gents. |
| Marston's - Wychwood Hobgoblin IPA (was Ruby Beer, was Hobgoblin) | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Dorking - Red India Ale | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Dorset Brewing Company - Tom Brown's Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried | |

15 Aug 2018 (Jack William)
Lunchtime visit as a drink stop on a cycle from Canterbury to Greenwich. A good few people in but not overly busy - I really liked the pub - good beer selection, reasonable prices a good estuary view from the first floor outside decked area - oh, and they have a bar billiards table!
| Iron Pier - Rytes | 4.50 | | I don’t usually like flavoured beer - but the hint of ginger in this was fine. A very nice pint. |

| St Austell - Proper Job | 4.50 | Not Tried | |

16 May 2016 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening. Mildly busy. Got in conversation with a fellow collecting branded beer glasses then a local CAMRA big wig told me local Draught Copy magazine will next be out at end of the week.
| Ramsbury - Belapur IPA | 5.50 | | Chewy and distinctive |
| Pig & Porter - Red Spider Rye | 4.80 | Not Tried | |
| Bexley - BOB (Bexley's Own Beer) | 4.20 | Not Tried | |
| Vale - Black Beauty Porter | 4.40 | Not Tried | |
| Dorset Brewing Company - Alterego | 4.50 | Not Tried | A taster was too sweet for my palate but had immediate lips and roof of mouth bitterness. An alt bier |
16 Jan 2016 (ChrisE)
Early Saturday evening and a good crowd in (which is more than can be said for the pub next door which looked almost empty). I sat and enjoyed my pint in a good friendly pub.

28 Dec 2014 (Stephen Harris)
Early lunchtime visit and not yet busy. I liked the feel of this pub; multi-roomed, and an astonishing slope to the floor in the main bar, and the great maritime photos and prints in the middle bar.
