Here for the launch of a new Otley Brewery beer, brewed ‘in collaboration with’ Melissa Cole – who is at the bar directing operations.
Ilkley - The Green Goddess | 5.50 | | A very complex beer. It is a strong, spicy Belgian ale heavily flavoured with green hops. The Belgian-ness comes from the use of La Chouffe yeast and the addition of spices including Szechwan pepper and nigella seed. The green hops used are Sovereign. |
Dark Star - Kiwi | 4.00 | | A pale gold, very fruity, hoppy taste. Perhaps could do with a little more malt body. |
Ilkley - Dinner Ale | 3.30 | | Tasted a bit feeble coming after three very distinctive, strongly flavoured beers. Will have to try it again another day. |
Redemption - Urban Dusk | 4.60 | Not Tried

Here for the presentation of the East London & City CAMRA Pub of the Year Award – pretty impressive for a pub that only reopened last June. Very busy indeed.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur | 5.90 | | Smooth and hoppy. The best seller on the bar here apparently. |
London Fields - Love Not War | 4.20 | | Reddish/brown best bitter with spicy/peppery hop. |
Grain - 3.1.6. | 3.90 | | Pale, dry beer with lager malt and plenty of hops. |

The CAMRA group I was with rolled on to this pub, which remained busy right up to closing time.
Mighty Oak - Whuppity Scorie | 4.20 | | Pale and hoppy, but with more malt character than some from this brewery. |
Brentwood - Red Roar | 4.40 | | House beer brewed for this pub by Brentwood. A sweetish, red ale. |

Very crowded in here on Saturday evening, with bouncers on the door. I got away with my ‘hoody’ – fortunately it seems they were just there to keep out the kids, rather than barring the door to riff-raff like us.
Fat Cat - Cougar | 4.70 | | Pale and citrus hoppy without being over-hopped. |
Summer Wine (SWB) - Resistance Dark Mild | 3.70 | | Hop free, black mild. Slightly sour hint. |
Dark Star - Partridge Best Bitter | 4.00 | | Routine best bitter. |
Grain - Tap Room Bitter | 3.40 | | Malt-led ordinary bitter. Nutty. |

Very busy in here tonight – our group was fortunate to get a table.
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - Citra | 3.10 | | Ever-popular, pale, citrusy, grapefruity beer. |
Otley - Oxymoron | 5.50 | | A smooth chocolatey, black bitter with a lingering hoppy finish. |
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - Hoxton Special IPA | 6.60 | | Deep gold in colour, strong and very hoppy. Floral and orangey. |
Brentwood - Chockwork Orange | 6.50 | | Near-black , full bodied beer with a little too much orange flavour. |

Thronged and bustling from early evening.
Redemption - Big Chief | 5.50 | | A serious, grown-up, amber beer with very heavy hopping that creeps up on you to become a sustained bitter finish. |
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - Shoreditch Sunshine | 3.80 | | A golden bitter with tingly carbonation and strong, bitter hopping. |
Camden Town - Bleeding Hop IPA | 6.40 | | On keg dispense. A deep amber, almost brown beer. Hops struggling to be heard over the background metallic carbonation and too low a temperature. Probably a good beer, I would like to find a cask-conditioned version of this. |
Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | Not Tried

A large early evening crowd in. Mostly younger generation, and all enjoying the good selection of beers and food. I've been overdosing on hops lately - so it's time for an evening on the dark side.
Grain - Blackwood Stout | 5.00 | | Pitch black with a smooth mouthfeel. Dry and roasty with just the subtest hints of smoke and coffee. |
Revolutions - Clash London Porter | 4.50 | | Black, roasty and delicious. A proper Porter. |
East London (ELB) - Nightwatchman | 4.50 | | Deep red in colour, this is quite a complex beer with a smooth mouthfeel, just a hint of 'Old Ale' sourness, leading in to a long, hoppy finish. |
