12 Feb 2016 (Stephen Harris)
A busy Friday evening with a presentation of Signature Brewery beers and a Q&A session with the Signature team.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Signature Brew - Black Vinyl Stout4.20ExcellentDry, black, chocolaty Stout.
Signature Brew - Roadie - All-Night IPA4.30ExcellentIn cask for the first time here tonight. A crisp and light Pale Ale, well-hopped with Cascade and Columbus.
Signature Brew - Dry-hopped Studio Lager5.20ExcellentA cask-conditioned and dry-hopped version of the brewery’s Vienna Lager. A one-off beer for tonight’s event. I enjoyed this. Not as sweet as the keg Vienna Lager.
Signature Brew - Signature Pale4.10GoodDescribed as the brewery’s ‘flagship beer’. Golden in colour, with US hop tastes from Perle, Magnum and Cascade.
Mighty Oak - Oscar Wilde Mild3.70Not Tried
Signature Brew - Red Wedge4.70Not Tried
Signature Brew - Session4.00Not Tried
Signature Brew - Studio Lager5.20Not TriedI think this is the Vienna Lager renamed.

Pre-match drinks with the usual crowd of friends.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - Hophead Dry3.80ExcellentSuperb. Just the kind of beer I like, and selling very fast here.
Red Star - Formby Blonde3.90GoodA typical Blonde-style beer. Good, although tasted rather sweet coming straight after the Dark Star beer.
North Blyth - Gold3.90AcceptableMalty, golden beer. Nothing special.
Mighty Oak - Oscar Wilde Mild3.70Not Tried
Five Points - Railway Porter4.80Not Tried

Post-match drink after a disastrous defeat on the pitch.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Five Points - Five Points Pale4.40ExcellentOne of the market leaders in this style in my view.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Zephyr4.40GoodTruman’s hoppiest, pale beer – my favourite of their regulars.
Hackney - Kentucky Common4.50GoodA very decent, dark, Best Bitter.

Post-match visit. Although there has been a big crowd at today’s game, rail travel difficulties mean it is relatively quiet in here after the match, with reduced beer offering, as many customers and most of the volunteer staff have to rely on cars to get home tonight.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Project X Star Anise4.80ExcellentA thick, full-bodied, roasty Stout.
Mighty Oak - Oscar Wilde Mild3.70Not Tried
Slater's - Smoked Porter4.80Not Tried

I’m pleased to be able to attend the annual Mighty Oak night at the O’s Club this year. It’s a very popular event and the crowds are certainly out tonight. Several of the beers are on their second cask by the time I leave a little after 9pm.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mighty Oak - Maldon Gold3.80ExcellentFamiliar, excellent, pale beer.
Mighty Oak - Silver Surfer4.10ExcellentInteresting, pale, Wheat Beer, well-hopped with Bobek and Marynka.
Mighty Oak - Elementary Penguin3.50ExcellentA traditional Bitter, brewed using Bramling Cross hops for a nice blackcurrant taste.
Mighty Oak - Elfin Marvellous4.50ExcellentA well-hopped, golden beer, with Amarillo and Simcoe hops.
Mighty Oak - Sergeant Pepper4.20GoodA full-bodied Bitter.

21 Nov 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Post-match drink with friends. Not quite as crowded tonight as it can get in here on match-days. My list of beers just scratches the surface of what had been available over the day.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mighty Oak - Oscar Wilde Mild3.70ExcellentI don’t drink much Mild, but I regard this beer as being the benchmark for the style.
Just a Minute - Bitter Daze4.00AcceptableA standard, dark Bitter.
Magic Dragon (formerly New Plassey) - Wagtail Ale4.00AcceptableGolden. A bit limp and a bit sweet.
Rudgate - Viking3.80Not Tried
13 Nov 2015 (Stephen Harris)
A promotion night for Round Tower Brewery of Chelmsford. As ever with these events, it is very popular and a big crowd gathers, pretty much draining all ten firkins. By the time I leave, news of the ghastly events in Paris is beginning to filter through.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Round Tower - Screens6.10ExcellentA strong and black Stout. Warming alcohol. Bit of roast. Sharp finish.
Round Tower - Slipstream (Sherry Cask Oak-aged Edition)5.40ExcellentSuperb Black IPA. The oak-aging gives a really good, smooth, mellow and more-rounded flavour to this beer, taking off all the sharp edges.
Round Tower - Slipstream5.70GoodStrength given as 5.4%. A decent, but not special, Black IPA.
Round Tower - BB Mild3.80GoodA very chocolaty dark mild.
Round Tower - Fenton4.50GoodGolden-coloured. Dominated by a hop bitterness in the finish.
Round Tower - Wireless Gold4.00AcceptableGolden-coloured. A bit too sweet and sticky for me.
Round Tower - Stout4.10Not Tried
Round Tower - Liminal4.50Not Tried

Brief visits both before and after tonight’s satisfying victory on the pitch. Not all beers recorded.
BeerABVScoreNotes
East London (ELB) - Nightwatchman4.50ExcellentI always enjoy this dark, rich, chocolaty beer, somewhere between a Bitter and a Porter.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Project X IPA5.10ExcellentSmall batch experimental beer. Well worth persevering with this one I’d say.

In here before a charity football match at Brisbane Road. An unexpectedly large crowd attends the game (3,000) and the bar is drunk dry by 2:30, and does not re-open after the game.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mighty Oak - Captain Bob3.80ExcellentGood Citra hop flavours.
Five Points - Five Points Pale4.40ExcellentPoured from a bottle and very fine, if a little too carbonated for my tastes.
Mighty Oak - Maldon Gold3.80GoodSomehow not quite as tasty as usual.
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - Old Street Pale5.00Not Tried
