Tasting Summary

These comments are the opinion of the individual reviewer and represent what they thought of the beer on a particular day in a particular pub. If a review is less favourable, it may be because the beer suffered somewhere in the supply chain between them and the brewery.

Philip PirripExcellent15 Dec 2018 Clip attached with one minute to closing time so a very late choice!
Philip PirripExcellent29 Sep 2018 Hopefully not brewed at Chiswick too
Philip PirripExcellent09 Mar 2017 Served on gravity from an upright metal pin on the bar back. A belated proverbial kick of the mule on the train home, unless there was actually a mule travelling too

Philip PirripExcellent23 Sep 2017 Very last half out of the cask and oddly better than the one I had 15 minutes earlier, held head and better carbonation. The beauty and mystery of cask ale

DosserExceptional16 Nov 2013 Wow. £2.50 a half. After my 4th I was convinced this wasnt strong. Half way through my fifth I started to wobble. After my 6th, well... home I went and a great nights sleep. Better than a sleeping tablet.

Stephen HarrisExcellent12 Dec 2012 Well-priced at £4 a pint and many people were indulging. I limited myself to a half. It is a black, smooth, liquoricey stout, with a strength that tastes like somebody has slipped a triple brandy in when you weren’t looking.

AndrewAcceptable10 Apr 2009 Medicinal, nettles, burnt plastic, pine, liquorish, tar, fags, alcohol, puff, and just a bit too much.
BlairExcellent10 Apr 2009 Very powerful. A lot of charcoal but in a good way if that makes sense. Rich with a fair amount of roasted malt and chocolate.

IanExceptional17 Feb 2009 Not quite as brilliant as at Planet Thanet two years ago, needs a bit of condition, like another 2 months to settle down, but still utterly fantastic. And and I drank this side by side with the Stone Russian Imperial Stout (a top 50 beer on Ratebeer) and it was hard to pick a winner between the two.

IanExceptional27 Jan 2007 Intense imperial stout. Such intense dark roasted malts. The tingle on the end is part sour, part charcoal, part roasted malt. Sour liquorice flavours too. What a greaty impy stout. The alcohol is heating the finish.
