Having walked around the market for a bit and got a bacon, cheese and bubble (& squeek) roll for lunch, I met up with Tom here. Richard, the owner, was in and he accused me of stalking him as he had been in the Crosse Keys the night before.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - JHB3.80GoodNot bad for the first beer of the day. They have a new cellarman here now and the cask beer is a lot better. This was served a little warm, but still good citrus flavours, tangerine and sherbert.
Dark Star - Winter Meltdown5.00GoodSpicy ginger, pale chestnut colour. Good spiciness. Pretty drinkable as it's got some sweet choc to balance the spice.

Pub number 6 of my crawl. Don't really remember getting here, but hey. Small but the cask beer really has improved here recently.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakleaf (now see Fallen Acorn entries) - Hole Hearted4.70ExcellentSuperb, with great hops.
Yates' (Isle of Wight) (some beers brewed at Goddards) - Undercliff Experience4.10AcceptableGood malt, slightly sweet. It's fine and slightly earthy.
09 Aug 2008 (Blair)
I liked this pub, had a really chilled out, relaxed feel to it. Hard to believe you're only 100 yards from Borough Market.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Kipling5.20ExcellentThis was very hoppy and very tasty. Reminded me a little of the Jaipur just a little less intense. Really good beer.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Wild Swan (was 3.5%)3.40Not Tried

As always, pretty busy, but Duff and myself got a table inside. We had a few drinks before heading to the Wenlock to meet up with more Ratebeer.com people.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Ufford - Stars & Stripes4.00AcceptableIt always worries me when I see an American themed name, because it normally means some US hops have been waved vaguely in the direction of the beer. Plus, if it does have the hops, the 4% means it is unlikely to hve the malt base to support it. The latter is the case with this one. Bit of a hazy gold. Very green hop. Lots of yellow grapefruity aroma and flavour, almost peppery hop. Bit plasticky. Good hop. Poor everything else.
17 May 2008 (Ian)
Ummm, should really have gone home, but I thought I would stop for one or two. Met a good scooper at the bar and we chatted for a bit and got a beer on a cellar run. Then Duff, Maria and Casper from Ratebeer turned up so we decided to make a night of it. Oh dear.
BeerABVScoreNotes
BrewDog - Edge3.20GoodI had this at Reading, but decided to have it again in case I hadn't been fair on it. Very drinkable mild with nice toasty roastiness.
Blackwater (sub-brand of Salopian) - Armageddon4.50AcceptableGold. Bizarrely a bit like a Belgian ale with rose petal flavour. Good and oddly nice.
26 Apr 2008 (Andrew)
We crammed in and got our pints then stood outside in the patio area. Interesting place from what I can remember. The guy's behind the bar seemed to know their stuff and answered our questions about the American beer.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Eastwood & Sanders - Broadacre4.10GoodRich brown bitter. Hints of rose petals and turkish delight. ...but bitter.
Wooden Hand - Pirate's Gold4.00Not TriedTony had this and it was off so he took it back and swapped it for a Snake Dog
Flying Dog - Snake Dog IPA5.60Not TriedTried a bit of Martin's. Typical over-the-top American IPA.
19 Apr 2008 (Ian)
Bumped into Phil Lowry here with the brewer from Moor Brewery and Duff from Ratebeer. Stood on the decking area and chatted about beer, funnily enough.
BeerABVScoreNotes
BrewDog - Hype4.10PoorGold, thin beige head. Buttery diacetyl aroma. Rest of the beer is ok with some biscuit and some bitterness. Beer is ok, but aroma is just too buttery for me. Will try it again if/when I see it again.
09 Apr 2008 (Ian)
Pretty busy so we were in the patio area. Good to see it busy and people enjoying the exotic beers from around the world.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Bath Ales - Dark Hare4.00PoorRuby with thin beige head. Some butter. Dull, doesn’t go anywhere. Toasty. Just not very good. Nothing wrong with it, but just dull.
29 Mar 2008 (Ian)
I was stood outside speaking to Phil Lowry on the phone and then with Richard who owns/runs Utobeer and The Rake. Good bloke and really fun to talk to.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - American Pale Ale (some has also been brewed by Fuller's)4.70ExceptionalWonderful wonderful beer. The mouthfeel, the hops, the malts, stunning
30 Nov 2007 (Ian)
Really very busy indeed on a Friday just after work, so not really surprising.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - Smoke5.00ExcellentA bit like a German Rauch but mixed with a good deep dark best bitter. Great condition.

The pub is found in Southwark, Central London, SE1 9AG.

Small pub on the north side of Borough Market run by the same people who own the Utobeer bottled beer stall in the market itself. The bar has 3 hand pulls serving UK cask beers and 6 taps supplying continental and world beers. An extensive bottle beer selection is also available from the fridges behind the bar. The bar has stripped wood floors, pale beige walls and a historic Pilkington glass ceiling. A decked patio provides extra space and seating. Definitely an excellent addition to the Southwark beer scene.

We have visited this pub 151 times, seen 348 different beers and tried 249 of them.
