5th visit of this outing: Ticking over with punters in for a quiz on in the inside dining area and sun-worshippers seated outside Wibblers’ wooden barn on benches. Speedy service for our early evening visit and thirds offered if you have at least 4 which mirrored the number of Wibblers’ ales on. Also on was one guest ale. The Wibblers Brewery was originally founded under the name, Blanchfields, in 1997. Taken over and rebranded as Wibblers Brewery in 2007, the brewery initially operated out of Mayland, Essex, before relocating in 2016 to its current, larger home in Southminster, Essex.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Wibblers - Apprentice3.90Excellent2nd beer of this visit: Served with very good head and lacing and lasting all the way on this clear copper-gold amber blonde. A dry bitter first bite with subtle hints of hedgerow and bramble fruits. A dry hoppiness winning over and emanating from its Polish Marynka hops. Its bitterness mixed with floral and citrus-driven flavours including fruit tea. Light copper blonde and rye malts aiding a subtly spiciness. Floral hoppy notes combined with fresh orange sailing out. In very good nick.
Wibblers - Dengie Porter4.50Excellent4th beer of this visit: Presented with a very good head and lasting lacing. With its chocolatey brown hue giving it the appearance of a copper-coloured bitter, it had a dry hoppy first bite. A bitter maltiness rising with hints of dark chocolate, caramel and coffee from its roasted blend of Crystal, Brown, and Chocolate malts. A fruited finish with touches of tangerines and orange from its German Mandarina Bavaria hops; its English Phoenix hops lending a traditional bitterness on its final descent. Served in top condition.
Wibblers - Dengie IPA3.60Good1st beer of this visit: Poured with a lasting head and lacing on this Southminster-brewed session pale ale. A dry hoppy first hit from its earthy and mildly fruited English hops used sparingly to aid its maltiness to win over its bitter notes. A malty sweetness with hints of brown sugar and caramel lingering from its mix of locally sourced East Anglian pale malt alongside crystal and darker malts to give it its distinctive mid-brown body and sweet caramelised touches. Served in very good form with great conditioning.
Wibblers - Genesis4.20Good3rd beer of this visit: Came with very good head and lacing and lasting throughout on this gold-coloured amber red ale. A fruited first hit. Its English Pale malt base aiding a light grainy sweetness. A herbal hoppiness rising with subtle citrus and floral hoppy notes winning over. A complex mix for my taste buds with citrus, lemon-zest and a hint of black pepper and almost liquorice all waving on this ale’s final descent. Its US Columbus hops have been used for both bittering and in the late-boil to add a dry-hop additional flavouring. Served in fine fettle.

Afternoon visit for beer and food. This is the first time that I have eaten here and I was surprised at the choice and value for money. Busy but plenty of space for social distancing.

Lunchtime to late afternoon we had the marquee to ourselves as a few other groups were outside enjoying the slightly warmer weather as of late. Great beers, service and company made for a much missed enjoyable atmosphere we've all missed over recent months.

A group of six of us met here at opening time and sat in the marquee enjoying good beer and coversation until afternoon closing. The kitchen was closed today but will be open at weekends. We had the marquee to ourselves but there were several groups seated outside.

Lunchtime and already a group of chaps in for a brewery tour, soon joined by another large group. Luckily we had the two main tables along the left side reserved for our group of sixteen, to which we were celebrating a friend's day before his 61st birthday. Good spirits (no pun intended) prevailed and we had an enjoyable couple of hours here, more so by the hard work of the owners who kept us supplied with beer and food and efficient table clearing duties.

Mid-afternoon, after a hot walk from Burnham along the sea wall and over the marshes. Quiet here, the Chelmsford Beer Festival having drawn away both staff and customers. The food looked very nice, but I had just eaten a sandwich before I arrived.

Busy lunchtime visit with a function for the Chappel beer festival volunteers just starting. We were soon joined in the bar by a few other visitors too. The pork scratchings as mentioned by ChrisE were very addictive!

My first visit here but it was easy to find as we just alighted from the train at Southminster and followed everyone else, it turned out that the pub was hosting a private party for people that had worked at the Chappel & Wakes Colne Beer Festival, they were accommodated in a separate room and us paying customers sat in the bar. Beware of the chilli flavoured pork scratchings unless you have a pint ready to cool your tastebuds. This pub was well worth visiting.
