Beer Festival and three bars open, one of which was outside and too hot for me despite the sun shades. The inside bars were cool and comfortable and service was quick and friendly.

Rooster's - Londinium (Taylors of Harrogate Traditional Coffee Porter)5.50Not TriedJust advertised as Londinium, with a hint of coffee, and a nod to the beer of yesteryear made popular by street and river porters in London in the 18th century. No mention of Harrogate.

Day one of their summer beer festival.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hawkshead - Imperial Stout8.30ExceptionalThe tasting notes just describe this as a robust Imperial Stout. It was fantastic, the full flavour reminiscent of Courage Imperial Russian Stout. The beer of the day for me.
Hawkshead - NZPA6.00Excellent
Magic Rock - Curious3.90ExcellentFull of American hops, and citrus. Moreish.
Buxton - Dark Nights4.60ExcellentDescribed as an American style porter. Deep chestnut brown with superb bitterness from the American hop varieties.

What a great place! Top flight beer is a given. But there's also a genuine friendly atmosphere, interesting live music and tasty taps snacks. Dog friendly too. Full range of Hawkshead beers were available on tap. A 'must visit' if in the area.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hawkshead - Windermere Pale (was 3.5%)3.40ExceptionalAt 3.5% this makes a real statement about the craft of a top class brewer. Malt and hops in perfect balance with a long dry finish leading you inevitably to the next pint.
Hawkshead - Dry Stone Stout4.50ExceptionalUnheard of to find 2 5* beers in one pub in one evening but here it was. Black in the glass with a long lasting deep beige head it looked great. An initial burst of hops was balanced by dark, roasty malts and a very solid body. Unremittingly dry in the finish this was top class brewing.
Hawkshead - NZPA6.00ExcellentAt 6% this was a subtle rather than 'in your face' pale ale. Inviting burnt orange with tight off white head the flavours were both rounded nad restrained. Long sweetish finish.
21 Jul 2011 (ChrisE)
Beer Festival. Two large bars and an outdoor drinking area, there were 71 beers on the list of which I think over 60 were available at the time of my visit. Good service from keen and enthusiastic staff.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - Citra4.20Excellent
Redemption - Trinity3.00ExcellentA really good tasty ale, and only 3.0%. Excellent and possibly worthy of five stars.
Magic Rock - Curious3.90ExcellentPale citrusy session ale with American hops, and selling very well here today.
Windsor & Eton - Knight of the Garter3.80Good
Hawkshead - NZPA6.00GoodThis was served in the outside area in a plastic cup which did it no favours at all. It appeared to be golden in colour but it was difficult to tell. The flavour of the New Zealand hops started to come through towards the end of the cup.
